Rubin is planning to host media visits to the summit facility on Cerro Pachón during a two-month period starting in early 2025. Members of the media wishing to visit the observatory are encouraged to submit this media visit interest form to assist with our planning. This FAQ page is a helpful resource, additional questions should be directed to communications-team@lists.lsst.org

The Rubin Communications Team has recently seen an increase in media requests, which will continue to build as we get closer to releasing the first Rubin images with a big media splash in 2025. If you’re interested in joining a pool of enthusiastic, media-trained individuals (both Rubin staff and worldwide science community members) that we can connect with reporters/journalists for interviews please fill out the Rubin media contact volunteer form. We also plan to offer opportunities for basic media training including talking points and key messages, interview referrals will only be made after completion of the training.

The Rubin site on Cerro Pachón weathered a significant winter storm early in August, with heavy snowfall and high winds (124 kph/77 mph). According to Eduardo Serrano, Rubin Observatory Site Manager, this was only the second time in 28 years that winds have exceeded 100 kph (62 mph) on Cerro Pachón. Despite these conditions, the main observatory building sustained only a few incidents of minor exterior damage, and some nearby support buildings lost sections of siding and roofing. No one was injured in the storm, and work on the summit resumed as normal once the roads were cleared and a thorough inspection was conducted.

The Data Management team released Version 27.0.0 of the LSST Science Pipelines in early August. More information and links to documentation are available on community.lsst.org.

Rubin Staff awards and AURA awards were presented at a Rubin All-Hands Meeting held virtually in early August. Congratulations to Freddy Munoz and Margaux Lopez, winners of this quarter’s Rubin Staff awards. Individual winners of AURA awards were Oscar Nunez (Service Award), Petr Kubanek (Technology Award), Carol Chirino (DEI Award), and Tomislav Vucina (Science Award). The AURA Team Award went to the Summit Electrical Team: Juan Fabrega, Luis Vergara, Roberto Olivares, Claudio Pasten, Jose Miguel Quintero, and Edgard Sepulveda. Congratulations to all of this year’s AURA award winners for their exceptional contributions. 

RUBIN IN THE MEDIA

“Dr. Becky” Smethurst, an astrophysicist at the University of Oxford and a popular YouTube content creator, recently posted a video explaining how Rubin Observatory is “The Most Ambitious Astronomy Project EVER.”

On August 7th, The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) published a comprehensive story, NSF-DOE Rubin Observatory will capture the unseen cosmos,” which features quotes from several Rubin representatives.

BBC Sky at Night Magazine published, “The biggest camera in the world is part of a new observatory set to study the mysterious dark universe,” on August 13th. 

OPERATIONS UPDATES

Rubin Observatory was well-represented at the International Astronomical Union’s General Assembly (IAU GA) in Cape Town, South Africa, August 6-15. Rubin staff hosted a booth in the exhibit hall supported by the Community Science and In-Kind Program teams, and there were a number of talks given by various members of the Rubin community. Africa-based meeting attendees expressed interest and enthusiasm for getting involved with Rubin and the LSST. 

Also at the IAU GA, members of the South African Rubin community and representatives from Rubin Observatory convened on August 13th for a full-day side meeting. The meeting, organized by Patricia Whitelock, program manager of the South African In-Kind Program, brought together South African PIs and JAs who are Rubin data rights holders with members of the Rubin staff including the Community Science and In-kind Coordination teams. Christina Williams and Gloria Fonseca Alvarez successfully led interactive sessions on using several aspects of the Rubin Science Platform throughout the day. Additionally, several Rubin staff were on hand to converse with the South African participants about the in-kind program and other Rubin-related topics.

We encourage applications for the position of project manager for The Canadian Data Intensive Astrophysics PLatform (CanDIAPL, pronounced “candy apple”), a data center and cloud-computing facility that will host Rubin data and data at other wavelengths, including precursor surveys to the Square Kilometer Array. Igor Suarez-Sola joined the Telescope & Site team on August 1st as Software Engineer. Igor is a Data Lab team member at NOIRLab who will be supporting Rubin’s Commissioning effort by working on Service Abstraction Layer (SAL) Scripting.

The Rubin Community Workshop (Rubin 2024) took place July 22-26 at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in Menlo Park, CA and was a big success. This year’s meeting was fully hybrid, with about 200 people attending in person and an additional ~250 participating in virtual sessions. Read a summary of the meeting at this link. The summit team achieved a major milestone on July 24th with the installation of the glass secondary mirror assembly on the telescope mount. This marks the successful integration of the first permanent component of the telescope’s optical system. The Rubin team issued a press release to announce the event. 

The first Data Management (DM) Standards Review was held at SLAC on July 29-30. The review committee commended the Rubin DM team on their strategy and approach to meeting requirements, and initiated productive discussions with DM team members. The committee’s formal report is expected in the coming weeks. See a group photo from the review in the Gallery.

El Taller Comunitario de Rubin (Rubin 2024) se llevó a cabo del 22 al 26 de julio en el Laboratorio Nacional de Aceleradores SLAC en Menlo Park, California, y fue un gran éxito. La reunión de este año fue completamente híbrida, con unas 200 personas que asistieron en persona y alrededor de 250 más que participaron en sesiones virtuales. El 24 de julio, el equipo en el cerro logró un hito importante con la instalación del conjunto del espejo de vidrio secundario en la montura del telescopio. The Rubin Community Workshop at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is underway this week in Menlo Park, CA, with approximately 240 Rubin staff, affiliates, and members of the Rubin science community attending in person. More than 250 additional people are participating virtually in this fully hybrid meeting. Announcements and reports from the meeting will be included in the next Digest.

The sixth in a series of Rubin science releases showcasing Rubin’s upcoming contributions to astronomy and astrophysics is now available. Read (in English or Spanish) and share “Rubin Observatory Will Detect Thousands of Elusive Brown Dwarfs, Unlocking Milky Way Mysteries,” at rubinobservatory.org.

We are saddened to inform you that our Rubin colleague and cheerful friend, Darko Jevremovic from the Belgrade Observatory, passed away unexpectedly on July 11th, 2024 at the age of 56. Darko led a group of Serbian astronomers to join the Project as early as 2011 and co-organized the LSST@Europe2 meeting in Belgrade in 2016. He contributed to Data Management's alert distribution design and to early LSST catalog simulations, and was a regular attendee at Rubin's all-hands summer meetings. Aside from his Rubin-related work, Darko was one of the principal developers of the Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Database. All of us who worked with Darko will miss him greatly.

In early July, the summit team removed Rubin’s Secondary Mirror (M2) from the container where it has been stored since it was coated in 2019, and integrated it with the mirror cell (photos here). The full M2 assembly consists of the secondary mirror, mirror support system, mirror cell electronics and sensors, thermal control system, and the mirror control system. It is supported by 72 axial actuators and 6 tangential actuators. The M2 assembly will soon be installed on the telescope mount, and then the summit team will re-install the Rubin Commissioning Camera.

LSST DISCOVERY ALLIANCE NEWS

LSST Discovery Alliance (LSST-DA) Inclusive Collaboration Initiatives are innovative programs with an immediate goal to position a diverse community of researchers to make cutting-edge scientific discoveries with Rubin LSST and a broader goal to change how science is done and who’s at the table. Please spread the word about these opportunities, including the Childcare Support Program to facilitate participation of parents in key science collaboration meetings, and the Expansion Partnership Program, which makes LSST science accessible to research communities that might otherwise be excluded.

PERSONNEL ANNOUNCEMENTS & OPPORTUNITIES:

Manuel Gomez began work with the SIT-Com team in Chile on July 8th as Instrumentation Engineer. Manuel will be participating in Rubin Auxiliary Telescope engineering runs, monitoring system performance to enhance operational efficiency. 

Adam Bolton began work with the Rubin Data Management Team as the new Data Facilities Lead at SLAC on July 15th. Adam will run the US Data Facility and Data Access Center for Rubin Operations and coordinate data processing with Rubin’s French and UK facilities.

Brian Brondel joined the Telescope & Site team as Full-stack DevOps Python Developer on July 15th. Based in Tucson to start, and relocating to Chile in the coming months, Brian will be assisting with lower level components as well as working on various databases and related services.

Ross Ceballo joined the Data Management team on July 15th, working remotely as Lead Build Engineer. In this role, Ross will lead the build engineering team and support the pipelines release and continuous integration system. 

Alex Broughton joined the Data Management team on July 15th, based at SLAC. As a member of the Algorithms and Pipelines group, Alex will be working on instrument signature removal — specifically brighter-fatter, linearity, and photon transfer curves.

Aparte de su trabajo relacionado con Rubin, Darko fue uno de los principales desarrolladores de la base de datos Dartmouth Stellar Evolution. Todos los que trabajaron con Darko lo extrañarán mucho.

A principios de julio, el equipo en el cerro retiró el Espejo Secundario (M2) de Rubin del contenedor donde se ha almacenado desde que fue recubierto en 2019 y se integró con la celda del espejo (fotos aquí). El conjunto completo del M2 consta del espejo secundario, el sistema de soporte del espejo, la electrónica de la celda del espejo y sensores, el sistema de control térmico y el sistema de control del espejo. Está soportado por 72 actuadores axiales y 6 actuadores tangenciales. El conjunto M2 pronto se instalará en la montura del telescopio y luego el equipo reinstalará la Cámara de Puesta en Servicio de Rubin.

NOTICIAS DE LSST DISCOVERY ALLIANCE

Las Iniciativas de Colaboración Inclusiva de LSST Discovery Alliance (LSST-DA) son programas innovadores con el objetivo inmediato de posicionar a una comunidad diversa de investigadores para realizar descubrimientos científicos de vanguardia con Rubin LSST y un objetivo más amplio de cambiar la forma en que se hace ciencia y quién está incluido.  Por favor haga correr la voz sobre estas oportunidades, y del Programa de Apoyo al Cuidado Infantil para facilitar la participación de padres y madres en reuniones clave de colaboración científica, y el Expansion Partnership Program, que hace que la ciencia de LSST sea accesible para las comunidades de investigación que de otro modo podrían quedar excluidas.

ANUNCIOS Y OPORTUNIDADES

Manuel Gómez comenzó a trabajar con el equipo de SIT-Com en Chile el 8 de julio como Ingeniero de Instrumentación. Manuel participará en las pruebas de ingeniería del Telescopio Auxiliar de Rubin, monitoreando el rendimiento del sistema para mejorar la eficiencia operativa.

Brian Brondel se unió al equipo de Telescopio & Sitio como desarrollador Full-stack DevOps Python el 15 de julio. Alex Broughton se unió al equipo de Gestión de Datos el 15 de julio, con sede en SLAC. Como miembro del grupo de Algoritmos y Dato Ductos, Alex trabajará en la eliminación de firmas de instrumentos — específicamente en curvas de transferencia de fotones más grandes y brillantes y su linealidad.

PROJECT & SCIENCE NEWS - NOTICIAS DEL PROYECTO Y DE LA CIENCIA

In-person registration has closed for the Rubin Community Workshop at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in Menlo Park, CA on July 22-26, with more than 200 people signed up. Registration for virtual participation is still available on the meeting website, as well as a detailed meeting agenda.   

The first LSST@LATAM meeting, sponsored by the University of La Serena, was held June 10-14. The meeting brought together approximately 100 Rubin staff, researchers and students from across Latin America in-person, as well as additional attendees online. Participants were provided updates on Rubin construction and operations; learned about the Rubin EPO program and Citizen Science opportunities; heard from each of the Rubin Science collaborations; and enjoyed several contributed talks. Additionally, attendees were treated to a day-long visit to Rubin Observatory. Despite an earthquake, and a significant rain event that resulted in the University closing and the conference going virtual, the meeting was a great success. Special thanks to the entire organizing committee, including Holger Drass and Fernanda Urrutia representing Rubin. See a group photo in the Gallery.  

Quite a few members of the Rubin team attended the SPIE Astronomical Telescopes and Instrumentation meeting in Yokohama, Japan, June 16-21, and presented on various aspects of the Rubin system. Photos, including a Rubin group photo, are available in the Gallery. 

The System Integration, Test, and Commissioning (SITCOM) team coordinated the fourth Operations Rehearsal for Commissioning (OR4) on the nights of June 25-27, directly involving well over 40 people. Over these three nights the observing team on Cerro Pachón, with support from scientists across the project, used real Auxiliary Telescope (AuxTel) and simulated Commissioning Camera (ComCam) images to practice taking and processing data. The data were also transferred to the US Data Facility (USDF) in California for further analysis, including broadcasting alerts for changes detected in the brightness or position of objects. The rehearsal also included taking calibration data for the cameras and studying their sensitivity, and carrying out a simulated Science Validation survey in preparation for commissioning the Data Management system. A new aspect of OR4 was that the summit team worked with the Active Optics group to demonstrate the ability to use deliberately de-focussed images to understand the Rubin optics, in preparation for aligning the Simonyi Survey Telescope using ComCam. In addition to data-taking, the group practiced and refined planning and management for observing in Chile and data processing across the broader collaboration. Rubin was the feature of an Astronomy article published online June 25th, “‘It’s going to be awesome’: How the Vera C. Rubin Observatory will survey space and time.” The article features interviews with several Rubin team members, and can be found at this link.  

A video produced by WEKA titled, “The Impossibles: Vera C. Rubin Observatory,” describes the features that make Rubin Observatory unique and valuable with an emphasis on Rubin’s data management system. The video is narrated by Leanne Guy, Data Management Project Scientist for Rubin.  

OPERATIONS UPDATES

The Rubin Formal Education team; with assistance from NOIRLab’s Communications, Education, and Engagement group, facilitated a weeklong workshop called “Summer Stars,” in Tucson, AZ, for high school and college educators on June 17-21. In addition to collaborating on workshop activities at Rubin headquarters on the first and last day of the workshop, the teacher group also spent three nights on nearby Kitt Peak touring telescopes, shadowing astronomers at work, and engaging in group discussions. Congratulations to Rubin Community Science Team member Gloria Fonseca Alvarez, one of the recipients of an IAU ODE prize for 2024. Gloria’s work cited began before she joined Rubin, but is aligned with some of her work on the Rubin Community Science Team. The awards will be presented at the IAU General Assembly in South Africa in August.

PERSONNEL ANNOUNCEMENTS & OPPORTUNITIES:

Camille Parisel joined the Rubin Construction team on July 1st as a Software Engineer. Based at IN2P3 in France, Camille will be responsible for development and maintenance of filter exchange system software on the LSST Camera.

NOTICIAS DEL PROYECTO Y DE LA CIENCIA

La inscripción para asistir en persona al Taller Comunitario de Rubin en el Laboratorio Nacional de Aceleradores SLAC en Menlo Park, California, del 22 al 26 de julio, se cerró con más de 200 personas inscritas. Aún está disponible la inscripción para participar virtualmente en el sitio web de la reunión, donde también encontrará una agenda detallada de la reunión.

El primer encuentro LSST@LATAM, patrocinado por la Universidad de La Serena se llevó a cabo del 10 al 14 de junio. La reunión juntó a aproximadamente 100 participantes presenciales entre miembros del personal de Rubin, investigadores y estudiantes de toda América Latina, así como también a asistentes adicionales en línea. Un aspecto nuevo de OR4 fue que el equipo en el cerro trabajó con el grupo de Óptica Activa para demostrar nuestra capacidad de utilizar imágenes deliberadamente desenfocadas para comprender la óptica de Rubin, en preparación para el alineamiento del Telescopio de Investigación Simonyi usando ComCam. Además de la toma de datos, el grupo practicó y perfeccionó la planificación y el manejo de la observación en Chile y el procesamiento de datos en la colaboración más amplia. Rubin fue el tema central de un artículo de Astronomy publicado en línea el 25 de junio, "'Va a ser asombroso': Cómo el Observatorio Vera C. Rubin investigará el espacio y el tiempo". El artículo incluye entrevistas con varios miembros del equipo de Rubin y se puede encontrar en este enlace.

Un vídeo producido por WEKA titulado “Los Imposibles: Observatorio Vera C. Rubin” describe las características que hacen que el Observatorio Rubin sea único y valioso, con énfasis en el sistema de gestión de datos de Rubin. El vídeo está narrado por Leanne Guy, Científica del Proyecto de Gestión de Datos de Rubin.

ACTUALIZACIÓN DE OPERACIONES

El equipo de Educación Formal de Rubin, con la ayuda del grupo de Comunicaciones, Educación y Participación de NOIRLab, facilitó un taller del 17 al 21 de junio llamado “Summer Stars”, en Tucson, Arizona, para profesores de educación secundaria y universitaria. Además de colaborar en las actividades del taller en las oficinas centrales de Rubin durante el primer y último día del taller, el grupo de profesores también pasó tres noches en Kitt Peak recorriendo telescopios, siguiendo a astrónomos mientras trabajaban y participando en conversaciones grupales. Felicitaciones a Gloria Fonseca Álvarez, miembro del Equipo de Ciencia Comunitaria de Rubin, una de las ganadoras del premio ODE de IAU 2024. Este trabajo de Gloria comenzó antes de unirse a Rubin, pero está alineado con parte de su trabajo en el Equipo de Ciencia Comunitaria de Rubin. Los premios se entregarán en agosto en la Asamblea General de IAU en Sudáfrica.
