The third Rubin science release, “Rubin Observatory Will Unlock Fossil Record of Galaxy Cluster Evolution,” is now available on rubinobservatory.org. Please share this story with your networks to help generate excitement about Rubin science.

A meeting of the AURA Management Council for Rubin Observatory (AMCR) took place in La Serena, Chile, on November 29th - December 1st. In addition to construction progress updates and a discussion about developing First Light celebration plans, the Council enjoyed a tour of the Rubin summit facility. The last time this group toured the site was in September 2019, so there was lots of progress to show. Photos from the summit tour are available in the Gallery.

Rubin Observatory hosted a summit visit from Bernadette M. Meehan, US Ambassador to the Republic of Chile, on December 1. After Ambassador Meehan toured the observatory and spoke with members of the Rubin team, she documented her experience—and her excitement about Rubin—in this social media post. Enthusiastic comments from high-level US government officials like Ambassador Meehan help build awareness and momentum for Rubin Observatory, and we thank the members of our team who made her visit special.

After reinstallation of the Rubin Commissioning Camera on the Telescope Mount Assembly (TMA) early in November, the summit team worked on balancing the telescope and now dynamic testing of the TMA is well underway.  A new video of the TMA on the move is available in the Gallery. 

The major milestone of rotating the main Rubin observatory dome with its permanent rack-and-pinion gear system was achieved this week. The 56 segments that make up the 30-meter diameter circular rack were secured in place, and the 5 drives with pinion gears were engaged to turn the dome under precise control. Up until now, dome rotation has utilized provisional friction drive wheels, which allowed for rough positioning as needed for construction. The newly installed geared drive system is the permanent means to rotate the ~600-ton dome to precise position and with very low vibration throughout the entirety of Rubin Operations. The efficient demonstration of his new level of dome completion was witnessed by the visiting AMCR panel. See a short video clip here.

Michael Jones McKean, artist-in-residence for Rubin Observatory, recently unveiled a stunning visual story about Cerros Pachón and Tololo, with Rubin as the central focus. The sculptural and poetic expression of the site can be experienced on the Twelve Earths Website. Michael describes Twelve Earths as “a planetary sculpture exploring radical interconnectivity along a 25,000-mile circular path, linking twelve diverse locations around the planet.” 

Rubin data management and administrative staff organized an International Virtual Observatory Alliance (IVOA) Interoperability Meeting in Tucson on November 10-12, following the ADASS conference in Tucson. The IVOA facilitates international coordination and collaboration towards the vision of astronomical data sets and other resources working as a seamless whole, and two hybrid interoperability meetings are organized each year. LSST DISCOVERY ALLIANCE NEWS:

LSST Discovery Alliance (formerly known as LSST Corporation) has launched their new website, providing a variety of material relevant to the Rubin LSST science community, including links to the science collaboration websites and information about all of their programs: Catalyst Fellowship, LINCC Frameworks, Data Science Fellowship Program, Summer Student Program, Inclusive Collaboration Initiatives, and Science Catalyst Grants.  The website launch party drew 75 participants!

LSST-DA is in partnership with the IAU National Organizing Committee and African Astronomical Society to raise funding for African Astronomers to participate in the 2024 IAU General Assembly meeting in South Africa.   You can learn more from this FAQ about the African Astronomer Travel Fund campaign.  Please consider making a donation to support this campaign through this online portal. 

PERSONNEL ANNOUNCEMENTS & OPPORTUNITIES:

Fabián Araneda-Baltierra joined the Data Management team on October 26th as Research Scientist. Based at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), Fabián will be supporting Rubin’s Commissioning effort. 

Jacqueline Seron (Observing Specialist - Senior Stage) and Paulina Venegas (Observing Specialist - Mid-career) joined the Rubin observing team in Chile on December 1st. Jacqueline and Paulina will be providing nighttime commissioning and operations support for the 8.4-meter Simonyi Survey Telescope and the 1.2-meter Rubin Auxiliary telescope.

A new position is available: SLAC Senior Scientist, Rubin Observatory US Data Facility Lead. The deadline to apply is December 15th. Details and information on other open positions can be found on the Rubin hiring page.

Michael Jones McKean, artista residente del Observatorio Rubin, reveló recientemente una impresionante historia visual sobre Cerro Pachón y Tololo, con Rubin como foco central. November is Native American Heritage Month, and LGBTQ + STEM day is coming up on November 18th. Rubin celebrates the contributions of all our diverse staff and community members! On the summit, the Rubin Commissioning Camera (ComCam) was reinstalled on the Telescope Mount Assembly (TMA) on November 3rd, using the newly-repaired dome crane ComCam had been removed in early August to allow the installation of the M2 cell and surrogate mirror and some additional electronics packaging upgrades for better in-situ maintenance. The recent re-installation (photos here) went about twice as quickly as the initial task, now that the team has its procedures well-established, and they worked extremely well together to achieve a precise and safe installation. Once utilities are fully connected to ComCam, and other tasks completed to allow telescope motion, dynamic testing of the TMA and the Primary/tertiary (M1M3) mirror cell will resume. One of the most important test campaigns is to verify that the M1M3 active pneumatic support system is operating properly under varying gravity vectors and the dynamic forces as the telescope moves.

As discussed at the Rubin Project and Community Workshop in August, the Project has baselined protected silver as the coating for the primary/tertiary mirror (M1M3), which is the same coating used for the secondary mirror (M2). This is reflected in a new set of LSST survey strategy simulations that have been released, “opsim V3.3,” which also contains updated system throughput and includes minor bug fixes and changes to the scheduler. A new paper, “Rubin Observatory LSST Transients and Variable Stars Roadmap” has been published on IOPScience. Written by members of the Rubin/LSST Transients and Variable Stars (TVS) Science Collaboration, this publication identifies research areas of interest and requirements, and paths to enable them with the LSST.

OPERATIONS UPDATES:

Next year’s Rubin annual meeting (Project & Community Workshop), rather than being fully virtual, is now being planned as a hybrid in-person/virtual meeting with the physical location and exact dates to be determined. We’ll continue to share other details as soon as they are available. We appreciate your patience as our plans to host an exciting and productive scientific meeting evolve.

In preparation for operations and early science, Rubin Observatory would like to consider any outstanding resources needed by those within the Rubin Community to meet their goals. Rubin is issuing a rolling call for existing and prospective recipient groups to identify opportunities for further in-kind contributions that are targeted to meet a specific need. PERSONNEL ANNOUNCEMENTS & OPPORTUNITIES:

David McKay joined the Rubin Operations Data Management team as Data Release Production (DRP) Processing Scientist on October 1st. Based at the University of Edinburgh, David will be providing oversight of DRP pipeline operation at the UK (and other), Rubin Data Facilities.

Diego Tapia, who was previously doing contract work for Rubin, fully joined the Rubin team as Junior DevOps Engineer on November 2nd. Diego will help maintain and improve the infrastructure upon which all the observatory software is deployed.

Carlos Morales started work as Early Career Observing Specialist for Rubin on November 2nd. Carlos will support day and nighttime commissioning for the Rubin Auxiliary Telescope (AuxTel) and the Simonyi Survey Telescope at the Rubin facility.

Noviembre es el Mes de la Herencia Nativa Americana y el 18 de noviembre es el día LGBTQ + STEM. ¡Rubin celebra las contribuciones de nuestro diverso personal y miembros de la comunidad! October 31st is Dark Matter Day, a globally recognized day to celebrate dark matter research and discovery. In case you missed it, Rubin recently published this science release about Rubin’s forthcoming contribution to the study of dark matter and dark energy. 

Plans are underway for the Rubin Observatory presence at the American Astronomical Society meeting (AAS243) in New Orleans, January 7-11, 2024. Rubin will host a mid-day Town Hall on Thursday, January 11th, and staff an exhibit booth throughout the meeting. If you’ll be attending the meeting, stop by the booth for a chance to win some limited-edition swag!

We’re excited to learn that Vera C. Rubin is one of five notable American women who will be featured in the 2025 American Women Quarters™ Program. Quarters honoring these women will be manufactured by the Mint facilities at Philadelphia and Denver and circulated in 2025. Read more about all five of the most recent honorees on the US Mint website, and learn the details about when and why Rubin Observatory was named in her honor on rubinobservatory.org.

At SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, the LSST Camera has been turned on and has just begun its last period of Operation and Verification Testing at SLAC. The Camera team expects to conduct about seven weeks of operation before turning the camera off and preparing it for shipment to Chile.

A group from the Institute for Data Intensive Research in Astrophysics and Cosmology (DIRAC) toured the Rubin summit site on October 23rd, photos from their visit are available in the Gallery.

RUBIN IN THE MEDIA

OPERATIONS UPDATES:

A new version, v5.0, of RTN-011, “Rubin Observatory Plans for an Early Science Program,” has been issued and is available on community.lsst.org. V5.0 includes updates to the timeline for Early Science following the construction project’s schedule workshop in October 2023.

Reminder: There will be an Accessibility Hackathon for Notebooks on Friday, November 10th from 9-11am PST. The Rubin Community Science team invites everyone who uses Jupyter Notebooks to attend this special virtual seminar. The first hour will be a presentation by Jenn Kotler (MAST STScI; Notebooks for All) on how to make notebooks more accessible to scientists with visual impairments. The second hour will feature breakout rooms where attendees can get assistance in implementing these techniques in their own notebooks. Get Zoom connection info at ls.st/dp0-events.

Rubin Observatory welcomes Alan Strauss as Head of Education and Public Outreach (EPO), based in Tucson, AZ, starting October 23rd, 2023. As Head of Rubin EPO, Alan will offer guidance and a visionary outlook for the EPO program, strengthen collaborations between EPO and other internal and external groups, and manage the day-to-day activities of the EPO team. 

Ken Kobayashi has assumed support of Rubin Observatory as a Financial Analyst in SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory’s Fundamental Physics Directorate. Jackie Chin will be providing backup support.

NOTICIAS DEL PROYECTO Y DE LA CIENCIA

El 31 de octubre es el Día de la Materia Oscura, un día reconocido mundialmente para celebrar la investigación y el descubrimiento de la materia oscura. Si te lo perdiste, Rubin publicó recientemente este comunicado científico sobre su próxima contribución al estudio de la materia y energía oscura.

Los planes están en marcha para la presencia del Observatorio Rubin en la reunión de la Sociedad Astronómica Americana (AAS243) en Nueva Orleans, del 7 al 11 de enero, 2024. Rubin organizará un Town Hall el jueves 11 de enero al mediodía y contará con un stand de exhibición durante toda la reunión. ¡Si asistes a la reunión, pasa por el stand para tener la oportunidad de ganar artículos promocionales de edición limitada!

Nos entusiasma saber que Vera C. Rubin es una de las cinco mujeres estadounidenses destacadas que aparecerán en el programa American Women Quarters™ 2025. Las monedas de veinticinco centavos en honor a estas mujeres serán fabricadas en las instalaciones de Mint en Filadelfia y Denver y entrarán en circulación en 2025. En el Laboratorio Nacional del Aceleradores SLAC, se ha encendido la Cámara LSST y acaba de comenzar su último período de pruebas de operación y verificación. El equipo de la Cámara espera llevar a cabo unas siete semanas de operación antes de apagar la cámara y prepararla para su envío a Chile.

Un grupo del Instituto de Investigación Intensiva de Datos en Astrofísica y Cosmología (DIRAC) recorrió el sitio de Rubin el 23 de octubre; las fotos de su visita están disponibles en la Galería.

RUBIN EN LOS MEDIOS

La Cámara LSST de Rubin apareció recientemente en un episodio de Twig Science Reporter, un servicio semanal gratuito de noticias científicas para aulas de kínder a octavo básico en EE. ACTUALIZACION DE OPERACIONES:

Se ha emitido una nueva versión, v5.0, de RTN-011, “Los Planes del Observatorio Rubin para un Programa de Ciencia Temprana”, y está disponible en community.lsst.org. La v5.0 incluye actualizaciones al calendario de Ciencia Temprana después del taller de planificación del proyecto de construcción realizado en octubre 2023.

Recordatorio: Habrá un Hackathon de Accesibilidad para Notebooks el viernes 10 de noviembre de 9 a 11am PST. El equipo de Ciencia Comunitaria de Rubin invita a todos los que utilizan Jupyter Notebooks a asistir a este seminario virtual. Durante la primera Jenn Kotler (MAST STScI; Notebooks for All) hará una presentación sobre cómo hacer que los notebooks sean más accesibles para los científicos con discapacidad visual. ANUNCIOS Y OPORTUNIDADES:

El Observatorio Rubin da la bienvenida a Alan Strauss como Jefe de Educación y Difusión Pública (EPO), con sede en Tucson, AZ, a partir del 23 de octubre, 2023. Como jefe de Rubin EPO, Alan ofrecerá orientación y una perspectiva visionaria para el programa EPO, fortalecerá las colaboraciones entre EPO y otros grupos internos y externos, y gestionará las actividades diarias del equipo EPO.

Ken Kobayashi ha asumido su rol como Analista Financiero para el Observatorio Rubin en la Dirección de Física Fundamental del Laboratorio Nacional del Aceleradores SLAC. Jackie Chin brindará apoyo de respaldo.
