Power on the summit is back on after a planned shutdown earlier this month, and regular activities have resumed after a short ramp-up period. The main reason for the shutdown was to safely connect a newly-installed 1.1-megawatt generator and its automatic transfer switch. This generator is a robust and powerful piece of equipment that will provide more reliable, stable power on the summit. The summit team took advantage of the powered-down status to perform other electrical work and upgrades, made easier and safer with all power off.

The Rubin Education and Public Outreach (EPO) program, which transitioned from Construction to Operations last fall, is now being widely promoted to a public audience via a press release issued on June 1st, and an ongoing social media campaign. We encourage you to share the new public-facing website (rubinobservatory.org) with your friends and family, and invite them to explore the web articles, videos, educational materials, and other products developed by the EPO team. We also invite you to participate in the high-score challenge (introduced in this Instagram post)  for EPO’s online game, Space Surveyors. 

Rubin Observatory and NOIRLab have jointly announced the new NOIRLab Ambassador program. This program is an initiative to increase public engagement with Rubin Observatory and other NOIRLab Programs by working together with motivated and enthusiastic volunteers to share the excitement and science of our organizations. Ambassadors can be NOIRLab or Rubin staff and scientists as well as external enthusiasts who support our mission in astronomy. Visit the NOIRLab website for more information.

Registration is open for LSST@Europe5: Towards LSST science, together! The meeting will be held in Poreč, Croatia, September 25–29, and will be conducted in hybrid format to enable access for remote participants and to a wider community. Rubin is gearing up to recognize Pride Month in June! Watch for a LGBTQIA+ focused TED talk discussion (these happen on the 2nd Monday of each month) on June 12th. Follow the #inclusion channel on Rubin Slack for details and discussions. 

Rubin participated in an Equity and Inclusion (EIC) meeting hosted by AURA in Hilo, HI, on May 8-12. Staff presented on recent Rubin activities and initiatives, including the Kindness Day celebration on February 17th, and gave updates from the Rubin Workplace Culture Advocates. The next EIC meeting is tentatively scheduled for November in Chile. 

The AURA Management Council for Rubin Observatory (AMCR) held a meeting in Washington, DC, on May 18-19. Topics of focus included the LSST Camera status and remaining work, systems integration and commissioning, Rubin data facilities, planning for first light, commissioning in-kind contributions, and the transition to Operations. Recommendations issued by the AMCR at the meeting will be addressed in the coming weeks. 

Testing of the Primary/Tertiary mirror (M1M3) cell assembly is underway on the summit, with the team focusing on cell performance in parallel with balancing the Telescope Mount Assembly (TMA). Although the total mass of the cell assembly was well known, early testing showed that the center of gravity needed to be adjusted. A concerted effort by the team to add mass to the cell has resulted in improved balance, and cell performance is good. See a photo of the TMA with the cell tipped 40 degrees in the Gallery.

During an operating run of the Rubin Auxiliary Telescope (AuxTel) on May 23rd, data from 25 images taken by the telescope were successfully sent from the summit to the US Data Facility (USDF) at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and processed through the LSST Science Pipelines automatically and in real time with Prompt Processing.

LSSTC NEWS:

LSSTC is excited to announce the call for proposals for the second round of the LINCC Frameworks Incubator program. The LINCC Frameworks team is working on robust open-source software tools to support analysis of LSST data at scale, and a key part of this effort is the formation of collaborations with the LSST science community. The Incubator program, which starts in the third quarter of 2023 with June 15th as the deadline for short, stage-one proposals, will provide dedicated funding and collaborations with software engineers to proposal teams who pitch compelling projects to be carried out in collaboration with the LINCC Frameworks team. Incubator projects should be aimed at solving computational challenges to develop open-source software that will enable a near-term science project using simulations and precursor data, and that serves as a starting point towards eventual LSST data analysis. OPERATIONS UPDATES:

Reminder: All Data Preview 0 (DP0) delegates are invited to a DP0 Virtual Summer School, scheduled for June 12-16, 2023. This Summer School has been designed as an accelerated learning experience to enable DP0 delegates to do Rubin-related research, focusing on the DP0.2 dataset. Planning is in full swing for the Rubin Operations Project and Community Workshop 2023 (PCW) which will take place at the Marriott University Park in Tucson, AZ the week of August 7, 2023. Visit the meeting website to submit session proposals, which are due May 19th (requires Rubin credentials or creation of an account). NEW THIS YEAR: Everyone is welcome to submit a request by June 16th to contribute a talk or poster in-person at the PCW (also requires Rubin credentials or account creation), and students are especially encouraged. More information is available on community.lsst.org.

The summit team has done some heavy lifting on Cerro Pachón in the last couple of weeks, swapping out the components installed on the Telescope Mount Assembly (TMA). First, they removed the mass surrogate for the M1M3 mirror assembly (a yellow cross-shaped structure that approximates the mass of the glass M1M3 mirror and its steel supporting cell). This mass surrogate was used throughout functional testing campaigns for the TMA, which culminated with the TMA designated as substantially complete at the end of March. After the M1M3 mass surrogate was transported to the maintenance floor (level 3) using the observatory’s vertical platform lift, the summit team brought the ~72-ton assembly of the M1M3 cell and surrogate mirror on their cart up to the telescope floor (level 8) and installed it on the TMA for the first time. The M1M3 cell and mirror surrogate assembly will be used for dynamic testing of the M1M3 mirror support system tilted to different pointing angles. Meanwhile, the M1M3 mass surrogate (the yellow cross) will be returned to the TMA in about November 2023—basically reversing the swap that was done last week—so the cell can then be integrated with the glass M1M3 mirror. The first of two half-day 2023 LSST Photo-z Virtual Symposia will take place on June 27th. The focus will be on the development and interoperability of software related to the generation and science validation of photometric redshifts for the LSST within the context of Rubin commissioning and international in-kind contribution programs. All are welcome to attend.

LSST CORPORATION NEWS:

Research Corporation for Science Advancement and the Heising-Simons Foundation are co-sponsoring Scialog: Early Science with the LSST, another strategic initiative to support early career researchers to prepare them for the new paradigm and treasure-trove of Rubin data that will come from LSST. The initiative will hold the first of its three annual meetings in May 2024 in Tucson, Arizona. These meetings are for Early Career Researchers to network across interdisciplinary boundaries, generate innovative ideas, and apply for catalyzing funding to pursue them. LSSTC plays an advisory role in this Scialog.

The LINCC Frameworks Team’s Python Project Template provides a convenient mechanism for the astronomy community to set up new GitHub projects or introduce functionality that enables more robust, collaborative development into existing projects. By answering a few text questions, the user can automatically generate a range of useful configurations for their project, including robust testing, formatting checks, and automatic documentation generation. The template is designed to be customizable and easily updatable as tooling changes. For more information, see the Python Project Template tech talk or the github repository.

OPERATIONS UPDATES:

The Rubin In-kind Program Coordination (IPC) team led the first international In-kind Assembly on April 17th. Approximately 60 attendees from the international programs and the general community received a brief update on the program, followed by talks from two contribution teams: the UK Data Access Center (DAC) and the Milankovic 1.4-meter telescope in Serbia. The IPC team plans to hold these assemblies quarterly going forward. The session recording is available at this link.

La iniciativa realizará la primera de sus tres reuniones anuales en mayo de 2024 en Tucson, Arizona. ACTUALIZACIÓN DE OPERACIONES:

El equipo de Coordinación del Programa In-kind (IPC) de Rubin dirigió la primera Asamblea internacional In-kind el 17 de abril. Aproximadamente 60 asistentes de los programas internacionales y la comunidad en general recibieron una breve actualización sobre el programa, seguida de charlas de dos equipos de contribución: el Centro de datos del Reino Unido (DAC) y el telescopio de 1,4 metros de Milankovic en Serbia. PROJECT & SCIENCE NEWS - NOTICIAS DEL PROYECTO Y DE LA CIENCIA

The Rubin Operations Project and Community Workshop 2023 (PCW) will take place at the Marriott University Park in Tucson, AZ the week of August 7, 2023. The meeting website is now live and we are accepting session proposals through May 19th (requires Rubin credentials or creation of an account). You can also indicate interest in childcare grants using this form (deadline April 28th). 

Following a Construction/Commissioning Schedule workshop held on April 6th, the updated Project completion date has been adjusted to February 2025, with System First Light forecast for October 2024. The completion date is a forecast from the detailed project plan to completion that will be updated as we progress through the challenging but rewarding next steps of system integration and test. The forecast date does not include the expected schedule contingency we will build into the plan forward as we work with the NSF and DOE on the final phases of the project.

The summit team recently installed four refrigeration cabinets containing the compressors for the LSST Camera refrigeration system underneath the floor of the telescope. The cabinets are attached to a beam, so they rotate with the telescope in azimuth but do not tilt in elevation. To put them in, the team took two floor panels out of the telescope floor and lowered the cabinets down through the hole onto a mobile lift table, then rolled each one to the correct location and installed it. These cabinets will be tested with the Refrigeration Pathfinder hardware that is part of the Commissioning Camera assembly, already installed on the telescope. As reported in the last Digest, the Telescope Mount Assembly is now substantially complete, see this recent news item for more details about this milestone achievement.

Visit the Gallery to see a very cool coadded image shared at a recent Rubin All-Hands Meeting. The image of a dense stellar field around the Small Magellanic Cloud was created with data from ~30 overlapping visits of the Rubin Auxiliary Telescope, using the g,r,and i filters.

OPERATIONS UPDATES:

All Data Preview 0 (DP0) delegates are invited to a DP0 Virtual Summer School, scheduled for June 12-16, 2023. This Summer School has been designed as an accelerated learning experience to enable DP0 delegates to do Rubin-related research, focusing on the DP0.2 dataset. More information and a link to register are available on community.lsst.org. Space is available for new DP0 delegates. PERSONNEL ANNOUNCEMENTS & OPPORTUNITIES:

Aaron Meisner joined the pre-Operations System Performance Team on April 3rd as Rubin Documentation Specialist. Aaron will be a member of the Community Science Team (formerly the Community Engagement Team).

Jhonatan Amado joined the pre-Operations Data Management team as Infrastructure & Support software developer on April 10th. Jhonatan will be based at Fermilab and will be supporting Rubin use of Kubernetes and other systems.

NOTICIAS DEL PROYECTO Y DE LA CIENCIA

El Taller del Proyecto y Comunitario de las Operaciones de Rubin 2023 (PCW) se llevará a cabo en el Marriott University Park en Tucson, Arizona, la semana del 7 de agosto de 2023. El equipo en el cerro recientemente instaló, debajo del piso del telescopio, cuatro gabinetes de refrigeración que contienen los compresores para el sistema de refrigeración de la Cámara LSST. Los gabinetes están sujetos a una viga, por lo que rotan con el telescopio en azimut, pero no se inclinan en elevación. Para instalarlos, el equipo sacó dos paneles del piso del telescopio y bajó los gabinetes a través del orificio a una mesa elevadora móvil, se trasladaron a la ubicación correcta y fueron instalados. Estos gabinetes se probarán con el hardware del Pathfinder de Refrigeración que forma parte del ensamblaje de la Cámara de Puesta en Servicio, ya en el telescopio.
