The date for Rubin Observatory’s First Look event — when Rubin’s first images will be publicly revealed — is still being finalized and will be shared soon. The Rubin Media Kit is now available in Spanish, thanks to translation assistance from the Communications and Outreach Office of the Center of Excellence in Astrophysics and Related Technologies (CATA). The Spanish-language media kit can be found on rubinobservatory.org, along with an updated version of the English-language media kit.

Recent progress updates related to on-sky commissioning are available on community.lsst.org in the News category with the commissioning-updates tag, and on the LSST-DA Slack workspace in the #commissioning-updates channel.

The Stanford Data Science Center for Decoding the Universe (C4U) is holding its first annual conference on June 5-6, titled “Data-driven Discovery in the Rubin Era.” The conference is designed to be interdisciplinary and discussion-focused, including a half-day “unconference” session. Registration is free, visit the meeting website for details and a registration link. 

Rubin managers and leadership participated in a recent meeting of the AURA Management Council for Rubin Observatory (AMCR), held in Tucson and virtually. Presentations given by Rubin staff highlighted recent progress and plans for the upcoming First Look event and the transition from construction to operations. The Council gave complimentary feedback and offered recommendations to ensure a smooth and effective transition.

Rubin was featured on NPR’s Shortwave podcast on April 25th in an episode titled “If another planet is out there, this telescope could help find it.”

Sky & Telescope published an article about Rubin, titled “Vera Rubin Observatory: Astronomy’s New Workhorse,” on April 28th. 

OPERATIONS UPDATES

Rubin Operations Director Bob Blum has spent the past three weeks in Chile with observatory staff and the commissioning team, observing recent technical progress at the summit and discussing plans for the transition to operations and the start of the first survey year. He also joined members of the US Data Facility and Base & Summit Data Facilities operations teams in La Serena for the Rubin NET meeting, where they reviewed the status and plans for Rubin’s Long Haul Network—the system that transfers images from the summit through South America, up to Florida, and into the USDF for nightly validation and prompt processing.

This will allow you to get familiar with the interface, work out any issues, and get your data rights verified by the project so you can be sure to get data immediately when Data Preview 1 (DP1) is released. LSST DISCOVERY ALLIANCE NEWS

Join us July 27–28 in Tucson for the LINCC Frameworks Workshop & Hackathon at the Rubin Community Workshop to explore Rubin early science data using LINCC Frameworks software tools. Hosted by the LINCC Frameworks team, this event will offer attendees the opportunity to learn via interactive software tutorials and then pitch and explore a collaborative project, with mentorship from experts. Don’t miss this chance to explore LINCC Framework tools and build cross-disciplinary connections. Space is limited — a selection process will give preference to early applicants to help balance experience levels and computing backgrounds. Assya Kiyanovski joined the LSST Camera team on April 14th. Assaya is a member of the Business Services Directorate (BSD)/ Fundamental Physics Directorate (FPD) Finance Team at SLAC. Ayssa’s main scope of work includes Rubin Observatory, LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration, FPD Research Mechanical Engineering and Technicians Shop, and Intensity Research and AI/ML.

ACTUALIZACION DE OPERACIONES

The Rubin team took the first on-sky engineering data with the LSST Camera on April 15th, shortly after darkness fell on Cerro Pachón. The first images were taken with the i-band filter. Thanks to Rubin’s successful on-sky campaign using the Commissioning Camera, the telescope optical alignments were remarkably close to optimal before even looking at the sky. Along with the excellent initial performance of the full Observatory optical system, the LSST Camera, its supporting refrigeration equipment, and the data acquisition and control systems all demonstrated smooth operation, just a few weeks after installation. The Data Management system successfully transported and processed the 3-gigapixel images at the US Data Facility within about a minute of acquiring the exposures. During the upcoming period of on-sky commissioning with the LSST Camera, Rubin Observatory will resume sharing brief technical progress updates with the Rubin science community on a roughly weekly cadence. Posts will appear on community.lsst.org in the News category with the commissioning-updates tag and on the LSST-DA Slack workspace in the #commissioning-updates channel. High-level updates will be also shared on Rubin social media accounts. 

A new feature story, “Preparing for the Greatest Cosmic Movie,” highlighting the work leading up to on-sky observations with the LSST Camera, is now live on rubinobservatory.org. The story also appears on the NSF NOIRLab and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory websites.

The Rubin Science Advisory Committee (SAC) welcomes its newest member, Richard Lane of Universidad Bernardo O’Higgins in Santiago, Chile. He is one of two Chilean representatives on the SAC, replacing Franz Bauer of Universidad Católica. The SAC extends its sincere thanks to Franz for his valuable contributions to the SAC, and a big welcome to Richard Lane!

RUBIN IN THE MEDIA

Rubin Observatory was featured in two recent stories on National Public Radio (NPR) stories in the United States. The first, “New, powerful telescope facility in Chile to film 10-year-long 'movie' of the sky.” aired on April 8th. The second, “If Planet Nine is out there, this telescope might actually find it,” aired the following day, April 9th. 

Rubin team members Sandrine Thomas, Deputy Director for Rubin Construction, and Ardis Herrold, Education Specialist, are featured in a March 31 Orbital Today article titled “Women Behind Telescope: How Scientists at Vera Rubin Observatory Shape the Future of Space Exploration & Inspire Girls in STEM.” The piece highlights their contributions to the observatory and their efforts to inspire the next generation of women in science.

Sandrine Thomas and Dominique Boutigny, CNRS Research Director at the Annecy Particle Physics Laboratory, were interviewed for a live radio story in France on April 14th titled “Vera C. Rubin Observatory: We will see more clearly.” Listen to it on the Radio France website.

El 15 de abril, el equipo de Rubin obtuvo los primeros datos de ingeniería en el cielo con la Cámara LSST, poco después de que oscureciera en Cerro Pachón. Las primeras imágenes se tomaron con el filtro de banda I. Gracias al éxito de la campaña en el cielo con la Cámara de Puesta en Servicio de Rubin, las alineaciones ópticas del telescopio estuvieron notablemente cerca de ser óptimas incluso antes de estar en el cielo. The recent installation of the LSST Camera garnered good media coverage in Chile, including stories in national newspapers El Mercurio and Las Últimas Noticias (LUN), as well as national TV stations (MEGA) and local TV stations (TVN Red Coquimbo).
