Rubin First Look, the online event revealing the first Rubin images to the world, is just days away (June 23rd). A livestream of the press conference in Washington, DC will be shown on YouTube (starting at 11:00 a.m. ET) and Watch Parties are scheduled in many locations. Visit rubinobservatory.org after the press conference to explore all Rubin’s First Look image products in more detail.

In addition to First Look, June 23rd will also be Rubin’s next “Day in the Life” image/video collection day. Whatever your day looks like, we hope you’ll snap a photo or record a quick video during your workday and share it with us. We’ll compile them for our ninth “Day in the Life of Rubin Construction” video, to highlight the incredible range of people and activities that make Rubin such a unique and vital place to work. Check out past videos and get inspired to submit your photo on or around June 23rd.

A new feature story highlighting the broad range of people who make Rubin successful, “Lights, Camera, Cosmos: The Cast and Crew Behind Rubin Observatory,” is published on the Rubin website in English and Spanish.

On the summit, on-sky commissioning has now been underway for a little over eight weeks. Recent technical updates from the Commissioning team are available on community.lsst.org in the News category with the commissioning-updates tag, and on the LSST-DA Slack workspace in the #commissioning-updates channel. Highlights are also posted on Rubin social media accounts. 

RUBIN IN THE MEDIA

Edward Ajhar, Rubin Observatory’s Program Officer with the U.S. National Science Foundation, was interviewed on Fraser Cain’s Universe Today podcast for an episode that aired on May 5th. Listen on YouTube.  

A video titled, “Never before seen images of our Universe,” posted by BBC News’s Tech Now program, appeared on the BBC News website on May 30th. Also on BBC News, “Mapping the Universe at the Rubin Observatory in Chile” published on YouTube on June 13th.

OPERATIONS UPDATES

Rubin Data Preview 1 (DP1) will be released on June 30th, 2025, one week after the Rubin First Look event. DP1 will contain approximately 2000 exposures in seven fields taken during the Commissioning Camera on-sky campaign. More information is available on community.lsst.org. Data rights holders who haven’t signed up for an account on the Rubin Science Platform can do so now by following the instructions here.

ACTUALIZACION DE OPERACIONES

Mark your calendars! Rubin imagery will be revealed to the world for the first time on June 23rd, 2025. This event, called Rubin First Look, will include a livestream of the official press conference in Washington, DC starting at 11:00 a.m. EDT. Watch parties are being organized in many locations, and anyone can participate virtually in this historic event. Confirmed details are available in this news post, and additional updates will be shared on rubinobservatory.org.

Preparations are ongoing for the Rubin Community Workshop, to be held in Tucson, AZ on July 28 - August 1. Everyone who applied for a talk or poster should now have received an email with their session assignment and a link to presenter information. Late poster applications are still being accepted. Follow the latest updates on the Rubin Community Workshop meeting website.

Those attending at the upcoming 246th American Astronomical Society (AAS) summer meeting in Anchorage, Alaska may be interested in these town hall sessions, both of which are scheduled for June 11th: the Rubin Observatory Town Hall (12:45 p.m. local time) and Vera Rubin Celebration Town Hall (6:30 p.m. local time). Additional information can be found on the AAS 246 meeting webpage. 

Rubin published the 9th in a series of science preview press releases on May 14th. Read “NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory will Unlock New Understanding of Variable Stars” on rubinobservatory.org.

A new feature story, “Ready, Set, Process: Preparing for Rubin Observatory's Data Deluge,” offers a look inside Rubin’s impressive data infrastructure. It’s published on rubinobservatory.org, and on the NSF NOIRLab and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory websites.

The Education and Public Outreach team has made a new resource available for anyone giving a public talk about Rubin — we invite you to make a copy of this “Introduction to Rubin” slide deck. You can use it as-is or edit it to suit your needs. A link to the slide deck can also be found at ls.st/resources.

Commissioning and calibration work continue on Cerro Pachón as the southern hemisphere winter approaches. Follow the latest technical developments on community.lsst.org in the News category with the commissioning-updates tag, and on the LSST-DA Slack workspace in the #commissioning-updates channel. Highlights are also regularly posted on Rubin social media accounts. 

OPERATIONS UPDATES

The National Science Foundation (NSF) convened a Comprehensive Review of NOIRLab last week. This independent review by a panel of astronomy and astrophysics experts, management/budget experts, facility experts, and safety experts, was a major milestone in the current 5-year Cooperative Agreement (CA) period for AURA and NOIRLab. The CA is the management and funding agreement for AURA with NSF. This review was a mid-term review to give NSF feedback on AURA and NOIRLab performance under the CA which includes operations for Rubin, Gemini, CTIO, Kitt Peak, and the Community Science and Data Center (CSDC) as well as support for administration and facilities. After three long days (and nights), the NOIRLab + AURA team received very high marks from the panel as well as a number of constructive recommendations to help further advance the Lab.

Rubin Observatory is prominently featured in a new, downloadable planetarium show created by NOIRLab’s Communication, Education and Engagement team. The show is free for download by planetariums, and focuses on the scientists using time-domain and multi-messenger observations from the International Gemini Observatory and Rubin Observatory to understand our changing Universe. This hands-on workshop and hackathon will use Rubin early science data and LINCC Frameworks tools. Hosted by the LINCC Frameworks team, the event includes interactive software tutorials, collaborative project work and expert mentorship. It’s a unique chance to gain experience with the LINCC Framework tools and build cross-disciplinary connections.

The Rubin Media Kit is now available in Spanish, thanks to translation assistance from the Communications and Outreach Office of the Center of Excellence in Astrophysics and Related Technologies (CATA). The Stanford Data Science Center for Decoding the Universe (C4U) is holding its first annual conference on June 5-6, titled “Data-driven Discovery in the Rubin Era.” The conference is designed to be interdisciplinary and discussion-focused, including a half-day “unconference” session. Registration is free, visit the meeting website for details and a registration link. 

Rubin managers and leadership participated in a recent meeting of the AURA Management Council for Rubin Observatory (AMCR), held in Tucson and virtually. Presentations given by Rubin staff highlighted recent progress and plans for the upcoming First Look event and the transition from construction to operations. The Council gave complimentary feedback and offered recommendations to ensure a smooth and effective transition.

Rubin was featured on NPR’s Shortwave podcast on April 25th in an episode titled “If another planet is out there, this telescope could help find it.”

Sky & Telescope published an article about Rubin, titled “Vera Rubin Observatory: Astronomy’s New Workhorse,” on April 28th. 

OPERATIONS UPDATES

Rubin Operations Director Bob Blum has spent the past three weeks in Chile with observatory staff and the commissioning team, observing recent technical progress at the summit and discussing plans for the transition to operations and the start of the first survey year. He also joined members of the US Data Facility and Base & Summit Data Facilities operations teams in La Serena for the Rubin NET meeting, where they reviewed the status and plans for Rubin’s Long Haul Network—the system that transfers images from the summit through South America, up to Florida, and into the USDF for nightly validation and prompt processing.

El Centro de Ciencias de Datos para la Decodificación del Universo de Stanford (C4U) realizará su primera conferencia anual los días 5 y 6 de junio, titulada "Data-driven Discovery in the Rubin Era ". La conferencia está diseñada para ser interdisciplinaria y centrada en conversaciones, e incluye una "desconferencia" de medio día. ACTUALIZACION DE OPERACIONES

El director de las Operaciones de Rubin, Bob Blum, ha pasado las últimas tres semanas en Chile con el personal del observatorio y el equipo de puesta en servicio, observando los recientes avances técnicos en el cerro y conversando sobre los planes para la transición a las operaciones y el inicio del primer año de la investigación. También se unió a los miembros de los equipos de operaciones de la Instalación de Datos de EE. UU. y del cerro en La Serena para la reunión Rubin NET, donde revisaron el estado y los planes de la Red de Larga Distancia de Rubin—el sistema que transfiere imágenes desde el cerro a través de Sudamérica, hasta Florida, y al USDF para su validación nocturna y procesamiento rápido.

NOTICIAS DE LSST DISCOVERY ALLIANCE

The Rubin team took the first on-sky engineering data with the LSST Camera on April 15th, shortly after darkness fell on Cerro Pachón. The first images were taken with the i-band filter. Thanks to Rubin’s successful on-sky campaign using the Commissioning Camera, the telescope optical alignments were remarkably close to optimal before even looking at the sky. Along with the excellent initial performance of the full Observatory optical system, the LSST Camera, its supporting refrigeration equipment, and the data acquisition and control systems all demonstrated smooth operation, just a few weeks after installation. The Data Management system successfully transported and processed the 3-gigapixel images at the US Data Facility within about a minute of acquiring the exposures. During the upcoming period of on-sky commissioning with the LSST Camera, Rubin Observatory will resume sharing brief technical progress updates with the Rubin science community on a roughly weekly cadence. Posts will appear on community.lsst.org in the News category with the commissioning-updates tag and on the LSST-DA Slack workspace in the #commissioning-updates channel. High-level updates will be also shared on Rubin social media accounts. 

A new feature story, “Preparing for the Greatest Cosmic Movie,” highlighting the work leading up to on-sky observations with the LSST Camera, is now live on rubinobservatory.org. The story also appears on the NSF NOIRLab and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory websites.

RUBIN IN THE MEDIA

Rubin Observatory was featured in two recent stories on National Public Radio (NPR) stories in the United States. The first, “New, powerful telescope facility in Chile to film 10-year-long 'movie' of the sky.” aired on April 8th. The second, “If Planet Nine is out there, this telescope might actually find it,” aired the following day, April 9th. 

Rubin team members Sandrine Thomas, Deputy Director for Rubin Construction, and Ardis Herrold, Education Specialist, are featured in a March 31 Orbital Today article titled “Women Behind Telescope: How Scientists at Vera Rubin Observatory Shape the Future of Space Exploration & Inspire Girls in STEM.” The piece highlights their contributions to the observatory and their efforts to inspire the next generation of women in science.

Sandrine Thomas and Dominique Boutigny, CNRS Research Director at the Annecy Particle Physics Laboratory, were interviewed for a live radio story in France on April 14th titled “Vera C. Rubin Observatory: We will see more clearly.” Listen to it on the Radio France website.

Kevin Wong joined Rubin’s Education and Public Outreach (EPO) team on April 21st as a Senior Backend Developer. Based in Tucson, AZ, Kevin will work with the EPO team to identify requirements, resolve bugs, and offer support during critical traffic periods.

El 15 de abril, el equipo de Rubin obtuvo los primeros datos de ingeniería en el cielo con la Cámara LSST, poco después de que oscureciera en Cerro Pachón.
