On February 17th, Rubin Construction and NOIRLab partnered to host a celebration of random acts of kindness. For a few weeks leading up to the event, Rubin staff and project members were encouraged to contribute to paper "kindness chains" at Rubin and NOIRLab’s physical locations, adding links to recognize co-workers for acts of kindness. On the 17th, colleagues connected in person and online for a celebration of kindness, which included inspirational words and stories from members of Rubin and NOIRLab staff, and a prize raffle. The summit team recently conducted a “cart and rails” testing campaign at the summit facility. The cart used in the tests is the transport cart for the surrogate mass standing in for the Primary/Tertiary Mirror (M1M3) assembly, and the rails are a combination of permanently and temporarily installed rail sections that allow the transport cart to travel between the maintenance floor and onto the moving azimuth section of the telescope mount. The cart and rails test is a step toward the verification for the transportation of the more than 36,000kg (~40 tons) of the final M1M3 mirror-and-cell system on the telescope. Save the date for “The Transient & Variable Universe” conference, to be held June 20-22 at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). This meeting will bring together the scientific community working on transient and variable science across all wavelengths. The science topics will be wide and ambitious, covering both Galactic and extragalactic science. A second announcement with more details is expected in March, and you can sign up for announcements through this form.

A Spanish-only event titled “Noches Astronómicas” will be offered on March 7th at the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology (KIPAC). Information and a link to register are available at this link.

OPERATIONS UPDATES:

The Rubin Education and Public Outreach (EPO) team held two virtual workshops for teachers in January, both featuring EPO’s “Expanding Universe” classroom investigation. One workshop was in conjunction with a week-long course facilitated by the International Centre for Theoretical Physics-South American Institute for Fundamental Research (ICTP-SAIFR) in São Paolo, Brazil, and the other was part of the Universidad de Conception’s virtual Summer School in Chile. These were the first workshops EPO’s formal education team has hosted for teachers in Latin America, and both were very well received. Between the two workshops, more than 200 teachers participated, representing more than 12 countries. Members of the education team also traveled to Houston in early February, where they presented a Solar System workshop at the 2023 Space Exploration Educators Conference.

LSST CORPORATION NEWS

The LSSTC Data Science Fellowship Program (DSFP) is now accepting applications for new students. You can learn more on the DSFP webpage, and apply directly using this form. 

The LSSTC DSFP is a supplement to graduate education in astronomy-related fields (e.g. astronomy, astrophysics, cosmology, planetary science, etc.), intended to teach students essential skills for dealing with big data. The hands-on nature of the program makes it very different from the traditional classroom setting. You don't need to know anything about data science to apply, you just need to be excited to learn.

LSSTC welcomes Andrew Sturner, who began his role as LSSTC Project Manager on February 6th. Andrew comes to LSSTC after four years as a Lecture Faculty member in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at San Francisco State University. Prior to teaching, Andrew attended Haverford College, and then he went to the University of Colorado Boulder for his graduate studies in the Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences, working on magnetospheric plasma physics as a member of NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission science team.

El 17 de febrero, Rubin Construction y NOIRLab se asociaron para organizar una celebración de actos de bondad al azar. ACTUALIZACIÓN DE OPERACIONES:

El equipo de Educación y Difusion Pública (EPO) de Rubin llevó a cabo dos talleres virtuales para Profesores en enero, ambos con la investigación en el aula del "Universo en Expansión" de EPO. 

Un taller fue en conjunto con un curso de una semana facilitado por el Centro Internacional de Física Teórica-Instituto Sudamericano de Investigaciones Fundamentales (ICTP-SAIFR) en São Paolo, Brasil, y el otro fue parte de la Escuela de Verano virtual de la Universidad de Concepción, en Chile. Estos fueron los primeros talleres formales que el equipo de educación de EPO organizó para docentes en América Latina, y ambos fueron muy bien recibidos. Entre los dos talleres participaron más de 200 docentes, representando a más de 12 países. Los miembros del equipo educativo también viajaron a Houston a principios de febrero, donde presentaron un taller sobre el Sistema Solar en la Conferencia de Educadores de Exploración Espacial de 2023.

February is Black History Month, and we invite you to follow our social media channels for a campaign highlighting notable Black astronomers and astrophysicists. Watch for new posts all month long on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. 

Random Acts of Kindness Day is coming up on February 17th! Leading up to that day, you can visit any NOIRLab site location to add links to a kindness chain, or post messages that recognize and celebrate our colleagues on the #rubin-be-kind Slack channel.

Registration is now open for the Steve Kahn Symposium on March 3rd at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. The day-long event will celebrate Steve Kahn’s career at SLAC and his leadership in the design and construction of the LSST Camera and Vera C. Rubin Observatory. The agenda also features tours of the Camera lab, and an evening reception. 

Michael Jones McKean, Rubin Observatory’s Artist in Residence, recently visited the team working on the filter exchange system for the LSST Camera at the CNRS lab in Paris and toured their ongoing work (photo). Michael is also planning a visit to the summit in March. Learn more about Michael’s work and his connection with Cerro Pachón on the Twelve Earths website.

A team of observing specialists have been working nightly (weeknights) on the summit, supporting the commissioning of the Telescope Mount Assembly (TMA) and observing with the Auxiliary Telescope during scheduled observing runs. OPERATIONS UPDATES:

The second call for applications requesting efforts from the Rubin In-kind General Pool software developers is open. Any teams within in-kind Recipient groups (Rubin teams and Science Collaborations) can apply. Please coordinate with the point of contact of your in-kind Recipient group (see list of contacts here) to discuss your proposal. The submission form will remain open all year but a first review will be made in March of applications received by Feb 22nd, 2023. More information is available on community.lsst.org.

Rubin leadership hosted Jean Charles Cuillandre (CEA/Euclid) and Jason Rhodes (NASA/Euclid) in Tucson on January 31-February 1 for a planning session on the next phase of Rubin-Euclid collaboration. This next phase will explore and define implementation strategies for jointly derived data products from the two missions: LSST and Euclid. The data products were defined in a community-based report released in 2021 with an update in late 2022.

LSST CORPORATION NEWS

We are excited to announce the launch of the LINCC Frameworks Incubator program website, call for proposals, and application form. The LINCC Frameworks team is working to provide robust open-source software tools to support analysis of LSST data at scale. The Incubator program, which starts in mid-2023 (the deadline for short, stage-one proposals is February 21st, 2023), will provide dedicated funding and collaborations with software engineers to proposal teams who pitch compelling projects to be carried out in collaboration with the LINCC Frameworks team.

PERSONNEL ANNOUNCEMENTS & OPPORTUNITIES:

Vincent Riot, the LSST Camera Project Manager and Rubin Observatory Deputy Project Manager will be leaving LSST and Rubin at the end of February to assume a significant leadership role on the ASD Scorpius project at LLNL project. Tim Bond, the LSST Camera Integration and Test (I&T) manager, will also be leaving SLAC on March 3rd to take on an exciting new opportunity with the Giant Magellan Telescope project. We thank both Vincent and Tim for their contributions to Rubin and the LSST Camera. Congratulations to Martin Nordby (photo), who will become the LSST Camera Project Manager, and Travis Lange (photo), who will become the Deputy Project Manager and also assume the role of I&T engineering manager. 

Bruno Sanchez joined the Data Management subsystem as Postdoctoral Researcher on February 1st. Based at CNRS in France, Bruno will be working on difference imaging algorithm development and maintenance.

Nos complace anunciar el lanzamiento del sitio web del programa LINCC Frameworks Incubator, la convocatoria de propuestas y el formulario de postulación. El equipo de LINCC Frameworks está trabajando para proporcionar herramientas sólidas de software de código abierto para respaldar el análisis de los datos LSST a escala. Rubin Observatory was highly visible at the winter meeting of the American Astronomical Society (AAS241) in Seattle WA on January 8-12. In addition to numerous presentations and posters highlighting Rubin/LSST science, Rubin staff hosted a booth in the exhibit hall and a well-attended evening Town Hall at the meeting. More information and a link to event photos can be found in this recent news post. 

We invite you to admire the near-complete status of the Rubin Observatory dome cladding in a recent drone video. The outside of the dome now has weatherproof aluminum cladding covering all wall and roof surfaces as well as most of the operable louver panels. Inside the dome, the mechanisms and drive control for the large aperture shutters are being finished. The shutters, rear-access door, overhead cranes, lights and all other mechanized electrified elements on the rotating structure will soon be outfitted with their permanent power connection. Full completion of dome construction is expected by early 2024. 

The Phase 2 Recommendations of the Survey Cadence Optimization Committee (SCOC) for the initial implementation of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) have been released. More contextual information and a link to the recommendations document can be found on community.lsst.org.

Save the date for LSST@Europe5: “Towards LSST Science, Together!” a conference to collaboratively develop LSST science opportunities in Europe that will be held in Poreč, Croatia, September 25–29, 2023. The meeting will be conducted in a hybrid format to enable access for remote participants and the wider Rubin/LSST community. More details can be found in the first meeting announcement. 

Staff highlights for January are now available on the Rubin project website. This month, read about your colleagues Neven Caplar, Holger Drass, Yijung Kang, Guido Maulen, and David Jiménez Mejías. After this month, the Rubin staff highlights initiative will transition to a new program, led by the Education and Public Outreach team, called Rubin Voices.

OPERATIONS UPDATES:

As part of the Rubin In-kind program, Rubin US community scientists will have an opportunity to become Participating Scientists in the ULTRASAT mission being deployed by the Weizmann Institute in Israel. ULTRASAT is an ultraviolet, time domain satellite mission covering the “whole sky” for up to six years starting in 2026. Synergies with Rubin time domain and other science make this a great opportunity. US scientists are enabled to participate in ULTRASAT through the collaboration with NASA and Rubin. The selection of Participating US Scientists will be done through a NASA Roses opportunity. Letters of intent (LOI) which will help inform the membership of the selection committee are due January 23rd. Full proposals are due March 31st and do not require that a LOI be submitted. 

The science community is invited to participate in a virtual workshop to continue discussion of computational use cases with the Rubin LSST, and to explore how they can be paired with specific In-kind contributed computing resources (Independent Data Access Centers and Scientific Processing Centers, IDACs and SPCs). The workshop will be held March 21-22, 2023, over two half-days. More information is available on community.lsst.org, or visit the meeting website to pre-register.

LSSTC has an exciting announcement about the LSST Interdisciplinary Network for Collaboration and Computing program: on January 26, 2023, at 10am Pacific time on the LINCC Tech Talks Zoom, members of LINCC Frameworks leadership at LSSTC, CMU, and UW will hold an initial information session about the LINCC Frameworks Incubators program. The LINCC Frameworks team is working to provide robust open-source software tools to support analysis of LSST data at scale, and a key part of this is forming collaborations with the LSST science community.   For more announcements of this sort, please sign up for the LINCC mailing list; for regular information about LINCC Tech Talks, please join #lincc-tech-talks on the LSSTC Slack workspace.

LSSTC and the IceCube Collaboration (IceCube) are pleased to announce a pilot childcare support program generously funded by the Heising-Simons Foundation. The partnership pilot program will provide childcare funding for four conferences over the next 12 months—two LSST conferences (the Rubin Project & Community Workshop and another LSSTC-sponsored conference) and two IceCube conferences. The program is designed to facilitate equitable participation in scientific meetings and reduce the burden of childcare costs for attending caregivers. Conference attendees will be invited to request funding to cover childcare costs above and beyond their usual expenses. PERSONNEL ANNOUNCEMENTS & OPPORTUNITIES:

The Rubin Community is saddened by the loss of Simon Krughoff, who passed away on January 14th. Simon spent over a decade helping build Rubin Observatory, first as the manager of the Alert Production Team at UW and then as the science lead for the Data Management SQuARE Team in Tucson. Simon will be deeply missed by his colleagues and friends at Rubin. A collection of memories and tributes to Simon can be found on community.lsst.org.

Shuang Liang joined the Rubin Operations team as an Observing Specialist on November 1st. Shuang is currently based at SLAC and will relocate to Chile when the camera ships later this year. On the summit, he will work initially on observing with the Rubin Auxiliary Telescope, supporting commissioning of the Telescope Mount Assembly, and supporting camera re-verification in the summit white room.

Luis Matamala joined the summit Safety team on January 9th as a safety engineer leading the development of a Fatigue Prevention Mitigation Program. Luis will also provide support for documentation, as well as translation of documents and other informative updates.

Peter Vaucher joined the pre-Operations Data Production team as a software developer on January 17th. Peter will be based at SLAC and will be supporting Rubin US Data Facility infrastructure, notably Kubernetes.

Rubin Observatory is now accepting applications for two open positions: Head of Education and Public Outreach (EPO), and Observing Specialist Manager. Details about these and other open positions with Rubin Observatory can be found on the Rubin hiring page.

NOTICIAS DEL PROYECTO Y DE LA CIENCIA

El Observatorio Rubin estuvo muy visible en la reunión de invierno de la Sociedad Astronómica Estadounidense (AAS241) en Seattle, WA, del 8 al 12 de Enero. Además de las numerosas presentaciones y carteles destacando la ciencia de Rubin/LSST, el personal de Rubin organizó un stand en la sala de exposiciones y una asamblea Town Hall muy concurrida en la reunión. Puede encontrar más información y un enlace a las fotos del evento en esta publicación de noticias reciente.

Lo invitamos a admirar el estado casi completo del revestimiento de la cúpula del Observatorio Rubin en este video reciente de drones. El exterior de la cúpula ahora tiene un revestimiento de aluminio resistente a la intemperie que cubre todas las superficies de las paredes y el techo, así como la mayoría de los paneles de persianas operables. En el interior de la cúpula, se están terminando los mecanismos y el control de accionamiento de lo shutters de gran apertura. Próximamente, los shutters, puerta de acceso posterior, puentes grúa, luces y los demás elementos mecanizados electrificados de la estructura giratoria, pronto estaran con su conexión eléctrica permanente. Se espera que la construcción del domo este lista  por completo a principios de 2024.

Se han publicado las Recomendaciones de la Fase 2 del Comité de Optimización de la Cadencia de la Investigacion (SCOC) para la implementación inicial de la Investigacion del Espacio y el Tiempo (LSST). Reserve la fecha para el LSST@Europe5: “¡Hacia la ciencia LSST, juntos!” una conferencia para desarrollar colaborativamente oportunidades científicas de LSST en Europa que se llevará a cabo en Poreč, Croacia, del 25 al 29 de septiembre de 2023. La reunión se llevará a cabo en un formato híbrido para permitir el acceso a participantes remotos y a la comunidad más amplia de Rubin/LSST. ACTUALIZACIÓN DE OPERACIONES:

Como parte del programa Rubin In-kind, los científicos de la comunidad Estadounidense de Rubin tendrán la oportunidad de convertirse en Científicos Participantes en la misión ULTRASAT que está desplegando el Instituto Weizmann en Israel. ULTRASAT es una misión satelital ultravioleta en el dominio del tiempo que cubre "todo el cielo" por hasta seis años a partir de 2026. Las sinergias con el dominio del tiempo de Rubin y otras ciencias hacen de esta una gran oportunidad. Los científicos Estadounidenses pueden participar en ULTRASAT a través de la colaboración con la NASA y Rubin. La selección de los Científicos Estadounidenses Participantes se realizará a través de la oportunidad de NASA Roses. Las cartas de intención (LOI) que ayudarán a informar a los miembros del comité de selección, deben presentarse el 23 de Enero. Las propuestas completas deben presentarse el 31 de Marzo y no requieren que se envíe una LOI.

Se invita a la comunidad científica a participar en un taller virtual para continuar la discusión de casos de uso computacional con Rubin LSST y explorar cómo se pueden combinar con aportes de recursos informáticos específicos In-kind (Centros de Acceso a Datos Independientes y Centros de Procesamiento Científico, IDACssy SPCs). NOTICIAS DE LA CORPORACIÓN LSST:

LSSTC tiene un anuncio emocionante sobre el programa Red interdisciplinaria para Colaboración e Informática de LSST: el 26 de Enero de 2023, a las 10 am, hora pacifico, en la sesion LINCC Tech Talks Zoom,  miembros de LINCC Frameworks en LSSTC,  CMU, y UW llevarán a cabo una sesión de información inicial sobre el programa LINCC Frameworks Incubators.El equipo de LINCC Frameworks está trabajando para proporcionar herramientas sólidas de software de código abierto para respaldar el análisis de datos de LSST a escala, y una parte clave de esto es formar colaboraciones con la comunidad científica de LSST. La Colaboracion LSSTC y IceCube (IceCube) se complacen en anunciar un programa piloto de apoyo al cuidado de niños generosamente financiado por la Fundación Heising-Simons. El programa piloto de la asociación proporcionará fondos para el cuidado de niños para cuatro conferencias durante los próximos 12 meses - dos conferencias LSST (El Taller Comunitario de Rubin y otra conferencia patrocinada por LSSTC) y dos conferencias IceCube. ANUNCIOS DE PERSONAL Y OPORTUNIDADES:

La Comunidad Rubin está triste por la pérdida de Simon Krughoff, quien falleció el 14 de Enero. Simon pasó más de una década ayudando a construir el Observatorio Rubin, primero como Gerente del Equipo de Producción de Alertas en la UW y luego como líder científico del equipo SQuARE de Administración de Datos en Tucson. Simon será profundamente extrañado por sus colegas y amigos en Rubin. Se puede encontrar una colección de recuerdos y tributos a Simon en community.lsst.org.

Shuang Liang se unió al equipo de Operaciones de Rubin como Especialista de Observación el 1 de Noviembre. Shuang trabaja actualmente en SLAC y se trasladará a Chile cuando la cámara se envíe a finales de este año. En el cerro, trabajará inicialmente en la observación con el Telescopio Auxiliar Rubin, apoyando la puesta en servicio del Montaje del Telescopio y apoyando la verificación de la cámara en la sala blanca del cerro.

Luis Matamala se unió al equipo de Seguridad del cerro el 9 de Enero como Ingeniero de Seguridad que lidera el desarrollo de un Programa de Mitigación de Prevención de Fatiga. Luis también brindará apoyo para la documentación, así como la traducción de documentos y otras actualizaciones informativas.

Peter Vaucher se unió al equipo de pre-operaciones  de Producción de Datos como desarrollador de software el 17 de Enero. Peter estara establecido en SLAC y brindará soporte a la instalacion del Centro de Datos de EE.UU de Rubin, en particular a Kubernetes.

El Observatorio Rubin ahora está aceptando solicitudes para dos puestos vacantes: Jefe de Educación y Difusion Publica (EPO) y Gerente de Especialistas en Observación.
