PROJECT NEWS

Minutes from the February 15th LSST Science Advisory committee phone meeting have been posted.  Key topics of discussion were the plans for LSST science operations, and the current status of the Operations Simulator and metrics to determine the scientific impact of various cadence algorithms.

The Data Management (DM) Leadership Team is fully engaged and working groups have been established to refine the high level designs in specific areas of DM.   Additional information available on the LSST Community Forum.

The construction crew on Cerro Pachón is making room for incoming hardware, including 16 sections of steel track which will sit on top of the lower enclosure pier to support the wheels that rotate the dome structure. 

The Camera Corner Raft was successfully evaluated at a Final Design Review earlier this week.

CORPORATION NEWS

Congratulations to Marcel Agüeros on receipt of the Presidential Early Career Award.  Marcel is an Assistant Professor of Astronomy at Columbia University and member of the LSST Transients and Variable Stars Science Collaboration Team.   This is a great honor, and we are happy that someone connected to LSST has received such a prestigious distinction!

PERSONNEL NOTES

Jorge Flores has joined the LSST team, recently hired as a contracted Electrical Inspector Tecnico de Obra (ITO) supporting general electrical inspection tasks for the main building fabrication effort.  Jorge has the SEC's Class A license, which means that he has no limitations with SEC for power installations. He most recently worked for GMT in support of their early construction site activities in Chile and will spend much of his time on Cerro Pachón, working with Jamie Seriche, our Construction ITO.

Minutas de la reunion Telefonica del 15 de febrero del Comité Asesor Científico de LSST han sido posteadas (posted.)  Los temas principales de debate fueron los planes de operaciones científicas de LSST, y el estado actual del Simulador de Operaciones y métricas para determinar las repercusiones científicas de diversos algoritmos de cadencia. 

El equipo de transicion de gestión de datos (DM) está totalmente acoplado y se han establecido grupos de trabajo para refinar los diseños de alto nivel en áreas específicas de la DM. Información adicional disponible en la LSST Community Forum.

El equipo de construcción en Cerro Pachón está haciendo espacio para la entrada de hardware, incluyendo 16 de las secciones de las vias de acero que se sentarán en la parte superior del lower enclosure pier para apoyar las ruedas que giran en la estructura de la cúpula.  

La Cámara Corner Raft fue exitosamente evaluada en una revisión del diseño final a principios de esta semana.

The 2016 LSST Joint Technical Meeting concluded on Wednesday, after bringing 150 members of the project team together for three days of lively discussion and productive work at the Chaminade in Santa Cruz, CA.   The management team stayed over an extra day to discuss topics of project communication and culture, including implementation of an ombudsperson program to provide a trusted system for reporting workplace issues within the Project.  The Group photo has been tweeted – check it out!

The “continuous pour” on Cerro Pachón, filling the pier evacuation with concrete, finished ahead of schedule and with total success!  This 31-hour non-stop effort was completed by a hard-working team on the summit with cooperation of the full moon and our astronomical neighbors, Gemini South and SOAR, which we very much appreciate!  Images have been posted to our Facebook page and the LSST image gallery, which continues to be updated weekly with construction pictures. 

The contract amendment dedicated to the purchase of LSST hardware at NCSA was fully executed this week, clearing the way to procure the first $2M of compute and storage equipment for the DM project, hardware which will soon be visible on the NCSA webcam.

La Reunión técnica conjunta LSST 2016 concluyó el miércoles, después de que 150 miembros del equipo del proyecto juntos durante tres días de intensos debates y trabajo productivo en el Chaminade en Santa Cruz, CA.   El equipo de gestión se alojo un día extra para discutir temas de cultura y comunicación del proyecto, incluyendo la implementación de un programa de defensor del pueblo para proporcionar un sistema de confianza para informar de problemas en el lugar de trabajo dentro del proyecto. La Group photo ha sido twiteado, ¡compruébelo!

El “vertido continuo" en Cerro Pachón, llenando la evacuación del muelle de hormigón, ha terminado antes de lo previsto y con total éxito! Estas 31-horas de esfuerzo sin parar fue completado por un gran equipo trabajando en la cumbre con la cooperación de la luna llena y nuestros vecinos astronómicos, Gemini Sur y SOAR, que apreciamos mucho! Las imágenes han sido publicadas en nuestro Facebook page y en LSST image gallery, que continúa siendo actualizado semanalmente con la construcción de imágenes. 

La enmienda del contrato dedicado a la compra de hardware LSST en NCSA fue ejecutado plenamente esta semana, despejando el camino para adquirir los primeros $2M en equipos de computación y almacenamiento para el proyecto DM, el hardware pronto estará visible en la NCSA webcam.

Changes are being made in leadership of the LSST Data Management (DM) team, a team that’s been led over the past few years by Jeff Kantor as Project Manager, Mario Juric as Project Scientist, and most recently K-T Lim as Project Engineer.  Following last week’s successful NSF status review, and reflecting the desire of all involved, Jeff will be stepping aside to take on various project-wide management challenges, K-T will be relieved of his additional Project Engineer role and return to focus on being the Data Management System Architect.  Mario will take over as DM lead in the interim period, assisted by LSST Project Scientist Zeljko Ivezic, temporarily assuming the core science-related DM Project Scientist duties, and Jacek Becla serving as the interim DM Project Manager.  A world-wide search will be conducted to select a new DM Project Manager to replace Jeff, who has provided more than a decade of heroic service to the project in his leadership role with DM.

Tim Jenness has accepted the role of LSST Publications Manager and is now responsible for overseeing the publication review process for technology papers produced by LSST Project participants.  This includes ensuring the accuracy of published information, recognizing contributions to the work by LSST “Builders”, and enabling publications by the broader community that use technical LSST data or information.

More than 150 members of the LSST technical teams will meet in Santa Cruz next week for a three-day “Joint Technical Meeting”.  Important topics of the week include detailed interface coordination, detailing integration and test activities, further development of the Operations Plan, and enhancements to Simulations including interfacing with ANTARES.

The camera grid, which supports the camera focal plane and is made out of a single Cesic® piece, went through a successful infiltration process this week.  Cesic is a carbon-fiber reinforced silicon carbide matrix with excellent mechanical and thermal properties. The infiltration of silicon into the matrix is a critical step in the fabrication process of this critical camera component. 

Congratulations to our LIGO colleagues on the detection of gravitational waves.  This triumph opens a new window of discovery on the Universe, one in which LSST has a role to play.  Their success is a crowning achievement of the National Science Foundation’s investment in large-scale scientific research projects.

Se están realizando cambios en el liderazgo del equipo LSST Data Management (DM), un equipo que ha llevado en los últimos años Jeff Kantor como gerente del proyecto, Mario Juric como científico del proyecto y, más recientemente, K-T Lim como ingeniero de proyectos.  A raíz del éxito del NSF Status Review de la semana pasada y reflejando el deseo de todos los implicados, Jeff se hará a un lado para asumir diversos desafíos de la gestión de todo el proyecto, K-T será relevado de su papel adicional de ingeniero de proyecto y volvera a concentrarse en ser el arquitecto del sistema de gestión de datos.  Mario asumirá como encargado de DM durante un período provisional, asistido por el científico del proyecto LSST Zeljko Ivezic,  temporalmente asumiendo deberes de científico del proyecto, DM relacionados con la ciencia y Jacek Becla sirviendo como el gerente del proyecto DM provisional. Una búsqueda mundial se realizará para seleccionar un nuevo DM Project Manager para sustituir a Jeff, quien ha proporcionado más de una década de  servicio heroico al proyecto en su  rol de liderazgo con DM. 

Tim Jenness ha aceptado el papel de director de publicaciones de LSST y ahora es responsable de supervisar el proceso de revisión de la publicación de documentos sobre la tecnología producida por los participantes en el proyecto LSST. La cámara, que apoya la cuadrícula del plano focal de la cámara y está hecha de una sola pieza Cesic®, pasó por un proceso de infiltración con éxito esta semana. Cesic es reforzado con fibra de carbono en matriz de carburo de silicio con excelentes propiedades mecánicas y térmicas. La infiltración de silicio en la matriz es un paso importante en el proceso de fabricación de este importante componente de la cámara.  

Felicidades a nuestros colegas de LIGO en la detección de ondas gravitacionales. Este triunfo abre una nueva ventana del descubrimiento en el universo, uno en los que LSST has a role tiene un rol. Su éxito es un logro supremo de inversiones en grandes proyectos de investigación científica de la National Science Foundation.

The Operations Planning Review wraps up this afternoon after a productive two days exploring observatory operations and staffing with an experienced, engaged panel.  The panel was charged with evaluating our framework and scope for the LSST operations plan and our (approach to, steady-state) FTE estimates. 

The NSF Status Review, and parallel evaluation of the LSST Earned Value Management System, completed mid-week with a positive debrief presentation from the committee.   Written comments will follow with recommendations for consideration.

Our Telescope Mount Assembly (TMA) subcontractor Asturfeito in Spain has begun to produce steel plates for the elevation hydrostatic bearings. 

LSST Director Steve Kahn and Deputy Director Beth Willman are both Keynote Speakers at the Future Sky Surveys and Big Data Workshop, taking place April 25 – 29, 2016 at KASI, Daejoen, Korea. 

Inspection of the installation of rebar in preparation for the pier foundation concrete pour on Cerro Pachón is nearly complete as seen in the latest LSST Facebook post. 

CORPORATION NEWS

The LSST Transients and Variable Stars (TVS) Science Collaboration is planning a “Road-Mapping get-together” for March 24 & 25, 2016, at Argonne National Laboratory.  This small collaborative workshop will shape the ongoing roadmap contributions into a coherent vision for the LSST TVS path to science.  More information is available online or by contacting organizers Federica Bianco, Ashish Mahabal, and Lucianne Walkowicz.

PERSONNEL NOTES

Christopher Contaxis and Harini Sundararaman have joined the LSST Telescope and Site team in Tucson to help with the design and development of software components of the telescope control systems.  Christopher has experience with software architecture, development and testing, most recently with hardware control systems and electronics test applications.  Harini has most recently worked in software development and verification of aircraft cockpit display systems.

La planificación de las operaciones de revisión termina esta tarde después de dos días productivos explorando las operaciones del observatorio y el personal con un experimentado panel acoplado.  El grupo está encargado de evaluar nuestro marco y alcance del plan de operaciones de LSST y nuestras estimaciones de FTE enfoque.

La Revisión de estado de NSF y evaluación paralela del sistema de gestión de valor acumulado de LSST, terminado a mediados de semana con un resultado positivo en una presentación informativa de la Comisión. Comentarios escritos seguirán con recomendaciones para su consideración.

Nuestro subcontratista Asturfeito de Telescope Mount Assembly (TMA) en España ha comenzado a producir planchas de acero para los cojinetes de elevación hidrostáticos.

Project team members from all subsystems have uploaded materials and practiced presentations in preparation for the NSF Status Review and Internal Operations Planning review taking place sequentially in Tucson next week. 

Project Science Team discussed requirements for advance observing schedule publication and was debriefed on a recent workshop about systematic effects at UC Davis. Various proposals to improve information flow between the Project and Science Collaborations were also discussed, as well as the agenda for open PST face-to-face meeting at the upcoming Joint Technical Meeting in Santa Cruz.

Data Management (DM) is working on updating the project-wide IT Security Plan and closing out the Winter 16 software release, including cleaning up documentation for both developers and end users.  The DM sizing model, used to evaluate engineering tradeoffs and estimate costs, has also had its technology basis updated and shows no major deviations.  DM is actively investigating the overlaps between LSST software and Astropy and looking into possible ways to increase compatibility between the two.

Two contracts were signed for installation of the network fiber optic cables in Chile from La Serena to the gate at the boundary of the AURA observatory property in the Elqui Valley, and from the gate to the summit on Cerro Pachón.  The former is contracted to REUNA and the latter to Telefonica.

The excavation for the telescope pier foundation on the summit has been completed, inspected by geotechnical engineers to verify competence of the rock structure, and surveyed for exact dimension. Everything looks good and the foundation is scheduled to be poured on February 22.

LSSTC welcomes several new International Contributors - The Governing Council of the University of Toronto (Canada), The University of Auckland (New Zealand), The Ruđer Bošković Institute (Croatia), Eidgenoessische Technische Hochschule Zuerich (Eth Zuerich) (Switzerland), The Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) (Germany), The Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics (MPA) (Germany) and the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) (Germany).  Agreements with these institutions and LSSTC enable participation of specified Principal Investigators to have full rights to LSST data products before and during the ten-year survey.

The LSSTC Enabling Science Committee is soliciting proposals for LSSTC funding to support workshops, schools and other projects to prepare for the research, education and outreach opportunities with the LSST data.  We are accepting proposals for activities planned through early summer 2017.  Proposal information can be found on the LSSTC website.

We welcome Administrative Assistant Nicole Auza to our Chile Project Office. 

Research Engineer Jagadeesh Yedetore and Research Scientist Santanu Chaudhuri, both from the Applied Research Institute at UIUC, have joined the LSST Data Management team at NCSA.  NCSA is coordinating with the Applied Research Institute to develop the required LSST production system and services.

Los miembros del equipo de proyecto de todos los subsistemas han subido los materiales y presentaciones en preparación para la Revisión de Estado de NSF y Planificación de Operaciones Internas que tienen lugar de forma secuencial en Tucson la semana próxima.  

El equipo Científico del Proyecto examinó las necesidades para la publicación de programación de observación avanzada y fue informada en un reciente taller sobre efectos sistematicos, workshop about systematic effects, en UC Davis. Diversas propuestas para mejorar el flujo de información entre el proyecto y colaboraciones científicas también fueron discutidas, así como el programa para la reunión cara-a-cara de PST en la próxima Reunión Técnica Conjunta en Santa Cruz. 

Gestión de Datos (DM) está trabajando en la actualización del Plan de Seguridad de IT del proyecto y el cierre del lanzamiento de Winter 16 software, incluyendo la limpieza de la documentación tanto para desarrolladores y usuarios finales. El modelo de dimensionamiento de DM, utilizado para evaluar las compensaciones de ingeniería y costos estimados, también ha tenido su base tecnológica actualizada y no muestra desviaciones importantes. DM está investigando activamente los solapamientos entre el software de LSST y Astropy y estudiando las posibles formas de aumentar la compatibilidad entre los dos.

Se firmaron dos contratos para la instalación de la red de cables de fibra óptica, installation of the network fiber optic cables, en Chile desde La Serena a control puerta, en el límite de la propiedad del observatorio de AURA en el Valle del Elqui, y desde control puerta hasta la cumbre de Cerro Pachón. Lo anterior fue por contrato con REUNA y el último con Telefónica.

La excavación de la fundación del pier del telescopio, excavation for the telescope pier foundation, en la cumbre ha sido completada, inspeccionada por ingenieros geotécnicos para verificar la capacidad de la estructura de roca, y estudiado para obtener la dimensión exacta. Todo se ve bien y la fundación está programada para ser vertida el 22 de febrero.

LSSTC celebra varios nuevos colaboradores internacionales - El Consejo de Administración de la Universidad de Toronto (Canadá), la Universidad de Auckland (Nueva Zelanda), el Ruđer Bošković Institute (Croacia), Eidgenoessische Technische Hochschule (ETH Zurich) de Zurich (Suiza), la Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) (Alemania), el Instituto Max Planck de Astrofísica (MPA) (Alemania) y del Instituto Max Planck de Astronomía (MPIA) (Alemania). Los acuerdos con estas instituciones y LSSTC permiten la participación de determinados investigadores principales a tener plenos derechos a los productos de datos de LSST antes y durante los diez años de estudio.

El Comité Científico de habilitación LSSTC está solicitando propuestas de financiación para apoyar talleres de LSSTC, escuelas y otros proyectos para prepararse para la investigación, la educación y las oportunidades de divulgación con  datos de LSST. Estamos aceptando propuestas de actividades planificadas hasta principios del verano de 2017. Información de la propuesta se puede encontrar en LSSTC website.
