The camera team held a design review at BNL last week leading to a successful completion of the science raft design.  

AURA’s Workforce and Diversity Committee met in Tucson last week, informing and supporting LSST in their effort to promote an inclusive and positive workplace culture, which is required to recruit and retain a diverse workforce. 

Steve Kahn and Beth Willman are in Germantown, VA, discussing LSST governance and funding for LSST Operations.  Participants include representatives of the NSF, DOE, and AURA.

The Telescope & Site group held a design review for the Facilities Building on the recinto in La Serena.  Those involved (LSST, AURA, and CTIO) have converged on a design for the office building and data access center.

The LSST Simulation Team held a meeting this week in Seattle at UW.  See the LSST Community Forum for Simulation News.

Construction on Cerro Pachón has reached a new level, literally, as the ceiling to the lower utility area is now completed which makes one floor in place and 8 more to go.  Images and description have been posted to Facebook, accessible directly or from the LSST News Page.

PERSONNEL NOTES

Tariq Qureshi has joined the Tucson team on a 5-month contract to support engineering documentation for the telescope and site group.  He has 15 years of experience with engineering documentation in the medical, electronic, military and aerospace industry and now extends that to astronomy!

An LSSTC-funded workshop on the “Last Kiloparsec of a Photon’s Journey” was held at UC Davis this week, exploring requirements necessary to achieve the ultimate sensitivity of the LSST to weak lensing (WL) science.

El equipo de camera llevó a cabo una revisión de diseño en BNL la semana pasada y que termino con una semana exitosa del diseño científico.

El comité de diversidad y laboral de AURA se reunieron en Tucson la semana pasada, informando y apoyando LSST en su esfuerzo para promover una cultura de trabajo incluyente y positiva, que se requiere para contratar y retener una fuerza laboral diversa.

Data Management (DM) Project Manager Jeff Kantor gave a presentation at the NGVLA Workshop in Socorro, NM, about lessons learned from LSST DM that could inform the Next Generation VLA.  Additional notes on all DM weekly activities are available in the community forum.

LSST's Project Science Team (PST) met in Tucson this week.  They discussed construction progress, planning for commissioning and operations phases, recent observing campaign in Chile focused on calibration metrology, LSST presentation at the upcoming mid-decadal review, proposed new baseline cadence and various ways to further optimize it, how to ensure that the construction team members get proper credit for their work, and the path forward regarding event brokers, including an informative presentation by the Antares team.

NOAO and LSST are leading a community-based study (funded by the Kavli Foundation and endorsed by NSF/AST) of US OIR capabilities needed to maximize science in the LSST era.  A description of the study, including a link for your input, is in the latest issue of NOAO Currents.

LSST Optics Engineer Constanza Araujo participated in the III Astro-Engineering Workshop in Santiago in November and gave a talk on the LSST Optical System; read more in today’s blog posting.

We invite applications for a postdoctoral scholar to join the leadership of the newly-established LSST Data Science Fellowship Program (DSFP). The LSST DSFP is a series of survey-science-focused schools, designed to supplement graduate curricula with the skills researchers will need to make best use of LSST data. The postdoctoral scholar will divide their time equally between conducting a competitive research program of their own choosing involving data science in astronomy/astrophysics, and developing this new LSST-focused educational initiative. The position is formally located at CIERA/Northwestern, but the postdoctoral scholar will also spend time working with the LSST DSFP Director Lucianne Walkowicz at the Adler Planetarium.  Application deadline is 1/15/2016.

The LSST Project Team congratulates Director Steve Kahn who has been elected as a 2015 Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Minutes and presentations from the LSST Science Advisory Committee face-to-face meeting held in Tucson on November 16, 2015, have been posted.  Topics discussed include the plans for deciding on the LSST cadence, whether the LSST camera focal plane might include two different types of sensors, and possible synergies between LSST, WFIRST, and Euclid.

A meeting was held with Department of Energy (DOE) representatives last week to discuss plans for the DOE contributions to LSST operations, along with plans for operational support of the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration (DESC).  The meeting was attended by LSST Director Steve Kahn, AURA President Matt Mountain, LSSTC Board Chair and SLAC Research Director David MacFarlane, SLAC Division Head for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology Tom Abel, LSST@SLAC Steering Committee Chair Steve Allen, DESC Spokesperson Rachel Bean, and DESC Deputy Spokesperson Jeff Newman.

AURA President Matt Mountain, LSST Director Steve Kahn, LSST Deputy Director Beth Willman, and NOAO Director David Silva will meet next week in Tucson to begin discussion of LSST Operations Concepts with the National Science Foundation.

CORPORATION NEWS

The LSST Supernova Science Collaboration has disbanded; members are encouraged to apply to join the Dark Energy Science Collaboration (which has a working group focused on the use of Supernovae as a cosmological probe) or the Transients and Variable Stars Science Collaboration (for those interested in the zoo of supernova explosions; contact Federica Bianco). 

LSSTC welcomes three new International Contributors - the UK Consortium, the University of Western Australia, and El Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC).   Agreements with these institutions and LSSTC enable participation of specified Principal Investigators (100 for the UK Consortium, 5 for the University of Western Australia, and 3 for the IAC) to have full rights to LSST data products before and during the ten-year survey.

Lucianne Walkowicz has replaced Michael Strauss as the LSSTC Science Collaborations Coordinator (LSSTCSCC).  This position is the principal conduit for the multi-directional flow of information between the Science Collaborations, the LSST Project, and the LSST Corporation.  Thank you Michael for your many years of outstanding service, and welcome Lucianne to this leadership role at the helm of the Science Collaborations.

Dan Puleo and Connor Miraval are recent additions to the Camera team, having joined the group working on the Science Rafts at BNL.  Peter Melchior joins the group at Princeton working on the DM software stack, in particular as it relates to the production of annual data releases

The Data Management (DM) Leadership Team held their quarterly meeting in Princeton this week.  The primary result was an agreement on refinements to the DM Roadmap, the milestone plan for construction and commissioning.

We started the Community forum as a tool to help Rubin Observatory's Data Management team collaborate (https://community.lsst.org/c/dm). As a team that spans the country, if not the globe, we've enjoyed having a platform for conversations that don't get lost in email inboxes. The Simulations and Camera teams have a presence on the forum as well. By following the Community forum you can get an insider's perspective on Rubin Observatory's development.
