PROJECT NEWS

Registration for the LSST 2016 Project and Community Workshop is open and agenda details are coming together on the meeting website. The workshop is scheduled August 15 – 19 as follows:

• An all-day Commissioning Planning Workshop will take place on August 15th, along with an afternoon Science Advisory Committee meeting.  Additional breakout rooms are available.
• A Joint NSF/DOE Status Review will take place August 16 – 18 involving LSST Project staff Tuesday (project status plenaries, open to Project and Community members) and Wednesday (breakout sessions).
• The Community Workshop will begin at 9 am on Wednesday and continue through Friday lunch.  Community participants are encouraged to contribute ideas, until Wednesday June 15, for breakout sessions through discussion threads in the LSST community forum starting here.
• Wednesday plenary topics include “O/IR Resources Needed to Maximize LSST Science” (B. Willman), “A Science Collaboration Update” (L. Walkowicz), and “LSST’s Observing Strategy and Community Study” (P. Marshall).
• Thursday plenary topics include a special talk on “Dynamics of Large Science Collaborations” by Stasa Milojevic (Indiana Univ.), a discussion of “How to Run an Effective Meeting” (B. Willman) as a result of last year’s silent discussion on project culture, and “In-depth Reports from the Data Management Team” of interest to Community Members.

The first set of 24 custom electronics units built by the Telescope & Site group is complete. Inner Loop Controllers (ILC) are components which measure and control forces with the mirror actuators shaping the mirror to preserve its precise curvature at different sky positions.  This first shipment of ILC units will be integrated with the M2 mirror cell at Harris, in Rochester, NY.

D. Calabrese is working with his team in the Project Office to develop online training modules of value project-wide.  A training session on The Oz Principle shows how to create both individual and organization accountability for achieving results.   It includes instruction on receiving and giving feedback, a skill which builds trust and respect, core components of the workplace culture LSST aims for.  Central to LSST’s Project Office culture is the motto “Be Kind”, as articulated by the Tucson-based Ben’s Bells program, promoting intentional acts of kindness.  More on all this at LSST 2016.

PERSONNEL NEWS

Felipe Menanteau has joined the Data Management subsystem as Research Scientist at NCSA, working part-time to help develop the Level 1 data processing system.  Felipe has been working at NCSA on the Dark Energy Survey Data Management team since 2013 and has an extensive background in observational astronomy and cosmology.

Josh Barr has joined the Telescope & Site group as a Data Analyst.  Josh is already onboard working with Jacques Sebag to create 3D maps from drone imagery of Cerro Pachón.   That work will be debuted at the upcoming SPIE meeting in Edinburgh.

La inscripción para el Taller de Proyecto y Comunidad LSST 2016 está abierta y los detalles del programa están en la página web del taller meeting website. El taller está programado del 15 - 19 de agosto de la siguiente manera:

• Todo un día de  taller de planificación de la puesta en marcha tendrá lugar el 15 de agosto, junto con una reunión del Comité Asesor Científico de la tarde. Salas de sesión de análisis adicionales están disponibles.
• Una Revisión de Estado en conjunto NSF/DOE tendrá lugar el 16 de agosto – 18 incluyendo al  personal del proyecto LSST el Martes (sesiones plenarias del estado del proyecto estado abiertos al proyecto y miembros de la Comunidad) y miércoles (sesiones de análisis).
• El Taller Comunitario comenzará a las 9:00 el miércoles y continuará hasta el viernes a la hora de almuerzo. Los participantes de la comunidad están invitados a contribuir sus ideas, hasta el miércoles 15 de junio, para sesiones introductorias a través de hilos de discusión en el foro de la comunidad LSST aquí here.

Este primer envío de unidades ILC será integrado con el M2 en la celda espejo en Harris, Rochester, NY.

D. Calabrese está trabajando con su equipo en la oficina del proyecto para desarrollar módulos de formación online de valor para todo el proyecto. Una sesión de formación sobre The Oz Principle muestra cómo crear responsabilidad tanto individual y de la organización para lograr resultados. Incluye instrucciones de recibir y dar retroalimentación, una habilidad que genera confianza y respeto, componentes esenciales de la cultura del lugar de trabajo a la que apunta LSST. El lema central de la cultura de Oficina de Proyectos de LSST es "Ser amable", formulado por Ben’s Bells program en Tucson, promoviendo actos intencionados de bondad. Felipe Menanteau se ha sumado al subsistema de Gestión de Datos como Investigador Científico en NCSA, trabajando a tiempo parcial para ayudar a desarrollar el sistema de procesamiento de datos de nivel 1. Felipe ha estado trabajando en NCSA en la gestión de los datos en el equipo de la encuesta de energía oscura desde 2013 y tiene una amplia experiencia en la observación astronómica y la cosmología.

Josh Barr se ha sumado al grupo de Telescopio y Sitio como Analista de Datos. Josh ya está trabajando con Jacques Sebag para crear mapas 3D a partir de imágenes drone de Cerro Pachón. Esa labor debutara en la próxima reunión SPIE en Edimburgo.

The LSST 2016 Project and Community Workshop will take place the week of August 15th in Tucson, AZ, and the website is now OPEN for registration: https://project.lsst.org/meetings/lsst2016/.  Community participants are encouraged to contribute ideas for breakout sessions at this Workshop, through discussion threads in the LSST community forum.  The starting point is here.

The Database team at SLAC hosted their 9th annual XLDB conference last week at the SLAC Linear Accelerator Laboratory.  XLDB events are attended by users and providers who meet to discuss the real-world challenges, practical considerations, and nuts-and-bolts solutions in the realm of managing and analyzing extreme scale data sets. Presentations are available on the conference website.

Several members of the Telescope & Site team will travel to Venice, Italy, next week for a Final Design Review of the Dome with vendor EIE Group.  Meanwhile the Telescope Mount Assembly is moving along with construction of the pier to support the trial assembly and test of the Mount assembly in Asturfeito’s facility in northern Spain; concrete will be poured next week. 

The edge of L1, the first lens in the camera optical path, was damaged during the initial shaping of the lens.  The issue will be resolved with a new boule and with no cost or schedule impact on the LSST project.

The LSST camera’s focal plane array is 189 4Kx4K CCDs organized into rafts of 3x3 sensors, with each raft supported by a base plate.  Engineering Ceramics Materials GmbH (ECM) has been awarded the contract for fabrication of 24 Science Raft Base Plates in the LSST Camera. 

And as many of us in the northern hemisphere are heading into hot summer temperatures, it’s nice to take a refreshing look at the summit of Cerro Pachón and see snow, with more expected this weekend!  While some snow is nice, a lot of snow can cause construction delays and additional costs if the vendor can’t work due to conditions.

Due to travel constraints, Science Collaboration Coordinator Lucianne Walkowicz will hold Office Hours during the month of June on Wednesday, June 8, and Wednesday June 29, both at noon central time. El Taller de Proyecto y Comunitario LSST 2016 tendrá lugar la semana del 15 de agosto en Tucson, AZ, y la inscripción ya está abierta en el sitio web: https://project.lsst.org/meetings/lsst2016/. Los participantes de la comunidad están invitados a aportar ideas para sesiones agrupadas en este taller, a través de hilos de discusión en el foro de la comunidad LSST. El equipo de la base de datos de SLAC organizó su 9ª Conferencia XLDB anual el pasado fin de semana en el Laboratorio Acelerador Lineal de SLAC.  Los eventos XLDB son asistidos por usuarios y proveedores, que se reúnen para discutir los problemas del mundo real, consideraciones prácticas y  soluciones en el ámbito de la gestión y el análisis de conjuntos de datos a escala extrema. Las presentaciones están disponibles en el conference website.

Varios miembros del equipo de Telescopio & Sitio viajarán a Venecia, Italia, la próxima semana para una revisión del diseño final de la cúpula con el proveedor EIE Group. Mientras tanto el conjunto de montaje del telescopio se mueve junto con la construcción del Pier construction of the pier para apoyar la prueba del montaje y prueba de la unidad de montaje en las instalaciones de Asturfeito en el norte de España; el hormigón se vierte la próxima semana.  

El borde de L1, el primer lente del camino óptico de la cámara, fue dañado durante la conformación inicial del lente. El problema se resolverá con un nuevo boule y sin costo o impacto de horario sobre el proyecto LSST.

El conjunto de plano focal de la cámara de LSST es de 189 4Kx4K CCD organizada en conjuntos de sensores 3x3, con cada conjunto apoyado por una placa base.  Engineering Ceramics Materials GmbH (ECM) se ha adjudicado el contrato para la fabricación de 24 Conjuntos de Placas Base de Ciencia en la Cámara de LSST.

PROJECT NEWS

AURA is now a member of the Object Management Group (OMG), an international, open membership, not-for-profit technology standards consortium.  OMG is responsible for the Systems Modeling Language (SysML) standard used by the LSST Systems Engineering team to conduct much of their work in a Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) environment.  The LSST project is one of the heavier users of the language in a "real world" project setting.  OMG Membership provides LSST the opportunity to share lessons learned as well as to influence future enhancements to the SysML standards.    

The LSST Science Advisory Committee has summarized its last several meetings in a series of recommendations and questions to the LSST Project Office; topics include the draft Science Operations plans, and details of Level 1 alerts and the longer-term availability of data releases to the community. 

Twenty members of the LSST team met in Tucson this week for a Use Case Workshop, flushing out key operational use cases to the point of determining required staffing.  This was in support of the Operations Planning effort underway in the Project Office.

Great progress is being made on fabrication of the M1M3 Mirror Cell.  The mirror cell weldment is being prepared for a thermal tress relief test, scheduled to begin on June 9th.

Breakout topics are solicited the broad science community for the LSST 2016 Project & Community Workshop, taking place in Tucson, AZ, the week of August 15th.  Community members are encouraged to join the discussion on community.lsst.org to decide on breakout sessions that best meet your needs.

The LSSTC DSFP is a supplement to graduate education in astronomy, intended to teach astronomy students essential skills for dealing with big data. AURA es ahora miembro de Object Management Group (OMG), una organización internacional, de composición abierta, consorcio de estándares tecnológicos consorcio sin fines de lucro. OMG es responsable del Modelado de Sistemas de Idioma (SysML) estándar utilizado por el equipo de Ingeniería de Sistemas de LSST para llevar a cabo gran parte del trabajo en un ambiente de modelo de Ingeniería de Sistemas (MBSE). El proyecto LSST es uno de los usuarios más pesados del lenguaje en un proyecto del "mundo real". Membresía OMG ofrece a LSST la oportunidad de compartir las lecciones aprendidas, así como para influir en las futuras mejoras a las normas SysML.    

El Comité Asesor de Ciencias de LSST ha resumido sus últimas reuniones en una serie de recomendaciones y preguntas recommendations and questions a la oficina del proyecto LSST; los temas incluyen el proyecto planes de Operaciones Científicas, y detalles de alertas Nivel 1 y, la disponibilidad a largo plazo, de los datos liberados a la comunidad.

Las aplicaciones están abiertas para el LSSTC Data Science Fellowship Program! This week on Cerro Pachón concrete was poured to form the lower portion of the telescope pier; all concrete work is scheduled for completion by the end of July. Also, the first three containers of materials for the PFlow facility lift have arrived on site.

Registration for the LSST 2016 Project & Community Workshop will open next week.  An agenda sufficiently detailed to plan travel will be distributed by email and the website will go live.

The SQuaRE Team within Data Management (DM) has released LSST the Docs, a new documentation publishing platform. LSST the Docs will allow DM to create and iterate on documentation more effectively, while also giving readers a better experience.

DM representatives engaged with the IVOA community at the IVO Northern Spring Meeting in South Africa last week.  Both LSST and IVOA are interested in collaborating, using IVOA interfaces to support LSST needs.  Three LSST representatives presented talks:

• David Ciardi:  Large Synoptic Survey Telescope and Synergies with the VO
• Brian Van Klaveren: LSST Data Access and VO
• John Swinbank: VOEvent Transport Protocol

CAID Industries has completed the initial fabrication effort of the M1/M3 mirror cell weldment and cover.  The cover functions as a vacuum boundary during testing and also as a protective cover during shipping.  They are now preparing to construct a temporary oven to perform thermal stress relief of the 9-meter x 9-meter x 2 meter steel weldment.

A job ad for the Head of Education and Public Outreach has been circulated on various listservs and will appear in the June AAS job register.  This is a critical leadership role within the project, complementary to our recently hired EPO Project Manager, Ben Emmons. 

LSST will be well represented at the upcoming SPIE meeting on Astronomical Telescope and Instrumentation with 40 presenting authors: 24 oral presentations, 13 posters, and 3 plenaries.

Linden Hickey joins the LSST Corporation as Executive Assistant to Pat Eliason, Corporate Executive Officer. Linden brings over 30 years of executive level support experience to the Corporation from the private sector where she most recently served as Senior Business Development Coordinator/Marketing Manager for a consulting engineering firm.

The United Kingdom has joined LSSTC as an International Contributor; there are 36 institutions in the LSST:UK Consortium.

PERSONNEL NOTES

The Telescope and Site team would like to welcome Freddy Muñoz to the La Serena office as he transitions into the role of Summit Integration Engineer, responsible for coordination of the various subsystems being delivered to the site.  Freddy has worked the last three years for CTIO upgrading the 4-meter Blanco telescope after successfully leading the Dark Energy Camera integration and installation on the telescope in 2012.

Steven Peckins has joined the Data Management subsystem as Research Programmer in NCSA's Integrated Data and Database Services division. He will be working on the LSST project part-time this summer, involved with deployment of a prototype Science User Interface system.

Igor Gaponenko has joined the Data Management team in Fritz Mueller’s group at SLAC.  As Senior Software Engineer for Distributed Systems/Big Data, he will be working on the LSST database design and data interfaces.  Igor previously worked with Jacek Becla on the BaBar database team

Esta semana en Cerro Pachón hormigón se vierte para formar la parte inferior del pier del telescopio; todo el trabajo de concreto está previsto para finales de Julio. Además, los primeros tres contenedores de materiales para la instalación del elevador PFlow han llegado al sitio.

El equipo de la plaza dentro de la gestión de datos (DM) ha publicado LSST the Docs, una nueva plataforma de publicación de documentación. LSST the Docs Permitirá crear marcos e iterar sobre documentación de manera más eficaz, pero también hay que dar a los lectores una mejor experiencia.

Notas del Personal

El equipo de Telescopio y Sitio quisiera dar la bienvenida a Freddy Muñoz a la oficina de La Serena como Ingeniero de Integración de la Cumbre, responsable de la coordinación de los distintos subsistemas que se entregan en el sitio. Freddy ha trabajado los últimos tres años para CTIO actualizando el Telescopio Blanco de 4 metros después de liderar con éxito la integración e instalación de la Cámara de Energía Oscura en el telescopio en 2012. 

Steven Peckins ha sumado al subsistema de Gestión de Datos como programador de investigación en la división de Datos Integrados y Servicios de Base de Datos de NCSA. Él estará trabajando en el proyecto LSST este verano a tiempo parcial, involucrado con la implementación de un prototipo de sistema de Interfaz de Usuario de la Ciencia.

Igor Gaponenko se ha unido al equipo de Gestión de Datos en el grupo de Fritz Mueller's en SLAC. Como ingeniero de software para Sistemas Distribuidos/Big Data, estará trabajando en el  diseño de la base de datos de LSST y en las interfaces de datos. According to Law Decree #353 from March 16, 2016, Chile will go into Winter time schedule this coming weekend. At midnight on Saturday May 14, all clocks in continental Chile and the Chilean Antártica will be set back by one hour (to 11:00 pm, Saturday 14th).  Please consider this time change when making plans for international meetings, video or phone calls. The time difference between Chile and Tucson will be 3 hours.

The next face-to-face meeting of LSST’s Science Advisory Committee will be on Monday August 15, co-located with the All Hands Meeting. The committee’s job is to represent the wider scientific community and to advise the LSST Project Office as decisions are made throughout the LSST construction phase.

The LSST Project Science Team (PST) met in Seattle from May 9th-11th. Topics discussed during this meeting included: the Data Products Definition Document, the image quality error budget, image simulations, deep drilling fields, and calibration.

La próxima reunión presencial del Comité Asesor de Ciencias de LSST será el lunes 15 de agosto, ubicada conjuntamente con el All Hands Meeting. El trabajo del comité es representar a la comunidad científica, y para asesorar a la oficina del proyecto LSST con las decisiones que se toman a lo largo de la fase de construcción de LSST.

El equipo científico del proyecto de LSST (PST) se reunió en Seattle durante mayo 9-11. Los temas discutidos durante la reunión incluyeron: el documento de definición de productos de datos, el presupuesto de error de calidad de imagen, campos de perforación profunda, y calibración.

Over forty participations attended a three day workshop on the O/IR Capabilities Needed to Maximize LSST science at Biosphere 2, May 2nd- 4th.    This workshop was sponsored by the Kavli Foundation and endorsed by NSF AST.  Joan Najita (NOAO) and Beth Willman chaired the workshop and related study (http://www.noao.edu/meetings/lsst-oir-study/).  Study Group leads were David Trilling (Northern Arizona University, LSST Solar System science collaboration Chair), Suzanne Hawley (University of Washington, LSSTC executive board member), Josh Simon (Carnegie Observatories), Doug Finkbeiner (Harvard), Ryan Foley (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign), Greg Rudnick (University of Kansas), and Jeff Newman (University of Pittsburgh, LSST DESC Deputy Spokesperson).  A summary report from the study and workshop will be released in late summer.
An impressive picture of a completed deck plate manufactured by Tucson vendor CAID Industries, who is building our M1 M3 mirror cell, can be found in the Telescope Gallery.

Systems Engineering trade studies cleared the way for approving the last remaining Wavefront Sensor specifications regarding extra- and intra-focal sensor offset and midpoint positioning tolerance.

PERSONNEL NOTES

Freddy Munoz has begun working with the LSST T&S group as our Summit Integration Engineer. He will be on LSST 50% of the time (CTIO the other 50%) until July. His most recent work was supporting the DECam project on the Blanco telescope. He will be responsible for coordination of summit/vendor deliveries, in particular the platform lift, the telescope mount assembly, the enclosure, and the coating chamber system.

AURA recognizes and encourages outstanding contributions to science and to service to the astronomy community for its staff at AURA Centers. Accordingly, AURA has an “AURA Outstanding Achievement Award Program” and this year, LSST staff member Bo Xin have been recognized for a Science award, Bill Gressler for a Service award  the LSST Administration group led by Daniel Calabrese, and including Glenaver Charles-Emerson, Carol Chirino, Rob McKercher, Sandra Ortiz, Libby Petrick, and Laurie Thomas, for a team service award. Congratulations to our colleagues for their well deserved award.

Ingeniería de sistemas los estudios sobre comercio despejó el camino para la aprobación de las últimas especificaciones del sensor de frente de onda sobre extra e intra-focal y la desviación del sensor de posicionamiento del punto medio de la tolerancia.

Notas personal

AURA reconoce y alienta las contribuciones pendientes de pago para la ciencia y para el servicio a la comunidad astronómica para su personal en centros de aura.
