Project Scientist Zeljko Ivezic and Data Management team member Meredith Rawls, both astronomers at the University of Washington, along with David Ciardi, the science lead for LSST’s Science User Interface Team (SUIT) from IPAC, all participated in the 105th Meeting of the American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO) in Boston, MA, November 10 – 12, 2017.  The theme of this year’s meeting was The AAVSO's Role in the Age of Large Surveys.  Read more.

Many team members were involved in an internal review this week of the Telescope &Site assembly, integration, and verification plans.  This review is looking at the integration and test process for the Telescope and Site subsystem, including the flow from established requirements to verification test plans, and the equipment and test processes used for verification.

NETWORK CHAOS: Next Friday, November 25th, the IT staff in Tucson will be upgrading the backbone Ethernet switch during which time all connections to Tucson servers WILL NOT WORK until the work has been completed.  This outage will affect all LSST services provided by the Tucson servers including phone, email, websites, project tools such as Confluence, Jira, and more.  Work will begin at 8am MST on Friday, November 25th (aka Black Friday) with partial to full functionality returning by late-morning.  Some outages in various services will continue during the rest of the day with the possibility of some clean up remaining for Saturday the 26th

We now know the date, location, and venue for the next LSST Joint Technical Meeting (JTM).  It will take place March 6-8, 2017, at the Hilton in Glendale, CA.  This meeting is for the broadly dispersed Project Team to gather and collaborate face-to-face. The meeting will be hosted by the Science User Interface Team (SUIT) at IPAC/Caltech.

LSST Science Collaboration Coordinator Lucianne Walkowicz joined other members of the Gemini Board who were meeting in La Serena this week for a visit to Cerro Pachón. 

The LSST Corporation Enabling Science Call for Proposals is now open. The call is open to proposals for workshops, meetings, and other programs to prepare for LSST data. This year, the Call is also open to proposals to support undergraduate research. Proposals are due no later than Monday, December 19, 2016 at midnight (2400 hours) PST. PERSONNEL NEWS

DevOps engineer Adam Thornton has joined the LSST Data Management Science Quality and Reliability Engineering (SQuaRE) team in Tucson.  As part of the team, Adam will be involved in writing software to validate and test the readiness of the LSST DM software system for science applications using simulations and precursor survey data.

Software engineer Te-Wei Tsai has joined the LSST Telescope and Site group in Tucson.  His duties will be to engineer software products for the Telescope Control System (TCS), including applications for the active optics system and instrumentation.

A science writer position has been posted on the LSST Hiring Site and two more positions will appear there shortly: an Education Specialist to join the Education and Public Outreach group and a Communications Manager to take over from Suzanne Jacoby who will be moving to a part-time role with LSST effective February 3, 2017.

Muchos miembros del equipo estuvieron involucrados en una revisión interna esta semana del ensamblaje de Telescopio & Sitio, integración y planes de verificación. Esta revisión está viendo la integración y el proceso de prueba para el subsistema de Telescopio y Sitio, incluyendo el flujo de requisitos establecidos para la prueba de verificación de planes, y los procesos de prueba y el equipo utilizados para la verificación.

Caos de la red: el próximo viernes, 25 de noviembre, el personal de IT en Tucson actualizará el conmutador Ethernet de red, tiempo durante el cual todas las conexiones a servidores de Tucson no funcionarán hasta que el trabajo se haya completado. Ingeniero DevOps Adam Thornton se ha sumado al equipo de LSST Data Management Science Quality and Reliability Engineering (SQuaRE) en Tucson.  Como parte del equipo, Adam estará involucrado en escribir software para validar y probar la disposición del LSST DM sistema de software para aplicaciones de la ciencia mediante simulaciones y precursores los datos de la encuesta.

Ingeniero en Software Te-Wei Tsai se ha unido al grupo de Telescopio y Sitio de LSST en Tucson. Su cometido será diseñar productos de software para el Sistema de Control del Telescopio (TCS), incluidas las aplicaciones para el sistema de óptica activa e instrumentación.

An LSST-commissioned review of the LSST Operations Plan took place last week in Tucson.  The Review Panel was charged to assess the current state of the Plan for its comprehensiveness, appropriateness and adequacy in meeting the operational requirements of the LSST system.  Over 2.5 days, LSST team members presented details of the draft plan to a panel of 15 reviewers with diverse experience in the management and operations of astronomical facilities, high energy physics experiments, and major data centers.  The review resulted in a set of insightful and productive recommendations for the team to consider as they complete this stage of the LSST Operations Plan development.  This careful planning is in preparation for a proposal to be submitted to the NSF and DOE in 2017.

Bill Gressler, our Project Manager for Telescope & Site, was in Chile last week and returned with a full report of activity on the summit and at the base facility.  Much of this activity can be seen on our summit webcams.  All the forms for concrete on the lower enclosure have now been installed, dome plates are being installed atop the forms in preparation for concrete pouring in mid-November, and more building steel has been attached.  On calibration hill, concrete has been poured to support the auxiliary telescope.  Main power has been connected to the LSST transformer meaning we now have grid power to use on site. Installation of fiber optics lines continues.  At the base facility, preparation for construction commenced with the removal of shrubs and trees to accommodate parking and logistics. 

LSST Systems Engineers George Angeli, Kathryn Wesson, Gregory Dubois-Felsmann, and Brian Selvy met in Pasadena, CA, last week with other major astronomy projects and software vendors (NoMagic, Intercax) to explore the use of model-based systems engineering (MBSE) tools.  Read more …

The Large Scale Structure Science Collaboration has dissolved and been incorporated into the Dark Energy Science Collaboration group. There are currently eight active Science Collaborations: Galaxies; Stars, Milky Way, and Local Volume; Solar System; Dark Energy; Active Galactic Nuclei, Transient/Variable Stars; Strong Lensing; and Informatics and Statistics.

LSST welcomes Jon Kmak to the Telescope & Site group as an Electrical Technician.  Jon has formal training as aircraft technician with approximately 4 years of experience and license to taxi airplanes for testing purposes. He is working on the detailing, construction, assembly and documentation of several elements of the control system, primarily supporting the M1M3 mirror cell system effort

Augustin Guyonnet has joined the Data Management (DM) subsystem as a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard University.  Augustin will work with the DM group at Princeton on the development of the tools (hardware, analysis software, and modeling) needed to determine the optical transmission of the atmosphere at wavelengths that are relevant to LSST observations.

Una revisión de puesta en marcha de LSST del Plan de Operaciones LSST tuvo lugar la semana pasada en Tucson. El Panel de Revisión tenía a cargo evaluar el estado actual del plan por su exhaustividad, pertinencia y suficiencia para atender las necesidades operacionales del sistema LSST. Por más de 2,5 días, miembros del equipo LSST presentaron detalles del proyecto de plan borrador a un grupo de 15 evaluadores con experiencia diversa en la gestión y operaciones de  instalaciones astronómicas, experimentos de física de alta energía, y grandes centros de datos. La revisión dio lugar a un conjunto de recomendaciones perspicaces y productivas para el equipo a considerar al completar esta etapa del desarrollo del Plan de Operaciones LSST. Esta planificación cuidadosa se encuentra en preparación a una propuesta para ser presentada a la NSF y DOE en 2017. 

Bill Gressler, nuestro Project Manager para Telescope & Site, estuvo en Chile la semana pasada y regresó con un informe completo de la actividad de la Cumbre y en la instalación base. Gran parte de esta actividad puede verse en nuestro summit webcams.  Todas las formas para el hormigón en el lower enclosure ya se han instalado, las placas del domo están siendo instaladas por encima de la formas en preparación para el vertido de hormigón a mediados de noviembre, y se ha colocado más acero de construcción. En calibración hill, el hormigón ha sido vertido para apoyar el telescopio auxiliar. Alimentación principal ha sido conectado al transformador LSST significando que ahora tenemos la red eléctrica para su uso en el sitio. Instalación de líneas de fibra óptica continúa. En las instalaciones de la base, comenzó la preparación para la construcción, con la extracción de árboles y arbustos para acomodar el estacionamiento y la logística.

LSST acoge al grupo de Telescopio y Sitio a Jon Kmak como Técnico Eléctrico.  Jon tiene formación formal como técnico de aviones con aproximadamente 4 años de experiencia y licencia para aviones taxi para purebas. Él está trabajando en el detalle, construcción, montaje y documentación de varios elementos del sistema de control, principalmente apoyando el esfuerzo del sistema de la celda del espejo M1M3.

Augustin Guyonnet se ha sumado al subsistema de Gestión de Datos (DM) como becario de postdoctorado en la Universidad de Harvard. Augustin trabajará con el grupo de DM en Princeton en el desarrollo de herramientas (hardware, software de análisis y modelación) necesarios para determinar la transmisión óptica de la atmósfera en las longitudes de onda que son relevantes para las observaciones de LSST.

The SLAC Communications Team has unveiled their new multi-media website featuring the LSST Camera. 

Four engineers from LSST attended the Society of Women Engineers meeting in Philadelphia, PA, last week.  This meeting brought together 5000 individuals for professional and personal development.  Read more.

The next LSST Joint Technical Meeting will take place March 6, 7, & 8 in Pasadena, CA, hosted by the IPAC group at Caltech/IPAC.  This annual meeting brings the technical teams together for cross-cutting discussion including interfaces, integration, commissioning, and operations.

In anticipation of starting construction on the Base Facility on the La Serena Recinto, a webpage with up-to-date news has gone live at https://project.lsst.org/base-facility/. 

Astronomy enthusiasts in Seattle learn about LSST at this recent AstroOnTap event.  AstroOnTap is a monthly astronomy outreach event organized and produced solely by the UW Astro grad students.

Daylight Savings Time (DST) ends at 2am this coming Sunday, November 6th.  Start times for some project meetings *may* change, as the LSST Project is standardized to Pacific Time.  Staff in Chile and Tucson, which do not switch from DST this Sunday, should be particularly careful.  All LSST team members should check with their meeting organizer if there is confusion.

The “Blind Analysis in High-Stakes Survey Science: When, Why, and How?” workshop has received funding for travel support from the LSSTC Enabling Science program.  The workshop will take place January 18 – 20, 2017, at SLAC Linear Accelerator Laboratory in Menlo Park, CA.

Three new jobs have appeared on the LSST Hiring Page:  LSST Survey Scientist, AV/IT Technician, and Administrative Assistant.  These jobs are all located in Tucson, AZ.

Alice Callen has joined LSST as the Deputy Project Manager for the camera.  Alice has been at SLAC since 2009 and has over 25 years of experience in management, engineering, and manufacturing process improvement.  She has worked as a risk manager for SuperCDMS, PSLB, and K-Substations projects; as the deputy project manager for FACET-II and the CAM/deputy project manager for the Matter in Extreme Conditions project.

We are pleased to announce Hector Swett has joined the Telescope and Site group as an Automation Controls Engineer.  Hector comes to LSST most recently from Gemini, where he was responsible for the facility interlock and enclosure control systems. His role with LSST will be to support distributed control and servo systems.  Hector joined LSST in Chile on November 1 and will be on the job in Tucson by November 18th.

Nos complace anunciar que Héctor Swett se ha sumado al grupo de Telescopio y Sitio como Ingeniero de Automatización y Control. November 1, 2016 - Today SLAC launched a new media-rich website and video about the LSST digital camera, the largest ever built for astronomy.  Ranked as the top ground-based national priority for the field for the current decade, LSST is currently under construction in Chile. The U.S. Department of Energy’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is leading the construction of the LSST camera – the largest digital camera ever built for astronomy. Financial support for LSST comes from the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, and private funding raised by the LSST Corporation.

Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium, has teamed up with two Princeton professors, LSST Science Advisory Committee chair Michael Strauss and J. Richard Gott, to discuss fundamental questions about the birth of the Universe and the latest discoveries by modern astrophysicists in their new book Welcome to the Universe: An Astrophysical Tour.   LSST is mentioned in this October 26th interview about the book, produced by WNYC.

An LSST Workshop and Solar System Science Collaboration Meeting took place @DPS 48 / EPSC 11, in Pasadena, CA, last week.  A summary and pictures can be found here.

Efforts in all areas of the project are coming together and leading toward operations.  Hardware integration has begun on the summit as reported last week.  A Telescope Assembly Integration and Verification Plan review will take place in Tucson next week, to examine planning for the period after contractors have finished and turned the site over to the Project but before Commissioning begins.  A review of the Commissioning Plan has been scheduled for January 24 – 26, 2017.  Meanwhile, many team members are preparing for the Operations Plan Review taking place in less than two weeks.    

LSST Director Steve Kahn and Project Manager Victor Krabbendam met with AURA President Matt Mountain and others last week in Chile to discuss plans for coordinating resources among Gemini, NOAO, and LSST, during the time of LSST operations.  A matrixed organizational structure is envisioned, combining co-located AURA resources so they can be efficiently deployed in support of AURA’s ground-based southern-hemisphere observatories.

Bill Gressler has been in Chile this week and reports that 3 of 16 sections of the embedded Dome rail plates have been aligned on the lower enclosure concrete forms.  The Pflow lift tower assembly is progressing, with 3 of 6 steel structure columns installed (this is the first 1/3 of the ~90 foot tower) with 12 more long columns to go.  In preparation for shipping the TMA and coating plant components to Chile, Bill met with representatives from the port of Coquimbo and vendor reps to better understand possible shipping configurations.

LSST's ombuds group had their monthly meeting with Steve Kahn, Beth Willman, and Victor Krabbendam this week. The discussion topics included inviting new ombudspeople from our colleagues in Chile, team morale, and workplace culture.  

Several LSST team members attended the ADASS XXI Conference, followed by IVOA Interoperability Workshop, last week in Trieste, Italy.  Programs and presentations are available on the respective websites, linked in the previous sentence.

An LSSTC-funded workshop has just been announced on the LSST Community Forum: "Getting Ready for Doing Science with LSST Data" will be held in Lyon, France, where the IN2P3 computing center is located, from June 12th to 16th, 2017.  The event website is online and will be updated as additional information becomes available. 

PERSONNEL NEWS

Tim Jenness (presently the Deputy System Architect) will transition to being the acting Data Management (DM) Systems Engineer. Over the next few months, Tim will be engaged in substantial work on DM System requirements, traceability, and verification reducing.  This change splits out some of the DM Systems Engineering tasks from DM System Architecture, allowing Tim to focus on the processes being in place and executed so that the final (extremely complex) system can be built and verified by a large team.

Determining the optimal observing strategy to simultaneously achieve LSST’s multiple science goals is performed via a complex scheduling algorithm - the “Scheduler”. The Scheduler is the brain of the LSST survey and is now in construction as part of the Telescope and Site (T&S) group.  Heads up: the job of the LSST Survey Scientist, who will lead the scheduler effort at the project level, will appear in the November AAS job register and on the LSST Hiring Page.

Dr. Eric Bellm, presently the Project Scientist for the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) project at Caltech, has agreed to join the LSST as the Level 1 Science Lead for DM, starting February 1, 2017. He will assume this role at the University of Washington, where he is joining the Department of Astronomy as a Research Professor. Eric's research interests span a number of topics, including compact binaries and GRBs. His extensive background in time domain surveys as well as instrumentation will make a tremendous addition to an already strong team at UW.

Integración de hardware ha comenzado en la cumbre como se informó la semana pasada reported last week. Una Asamblea de Revisión del Plan de Integración y Verificación del Telescopio tomará lugar en Tucson la próxima semana, para examinar la planificación para el período después de que los contratistas hayan terminado y entregado el sitio al proyecto, pero antes de la puesta en marcha comienza. Una revisión del Plan de la puesta en marcha ha sido programada para el 24-26 de enero, 2017. Mientras tanto, muchos miembros del equipo se están preparando para la revisión del Plan de operaciones que toma lugar en menos de dos semanas.    

Director de LSST Steve Kahn y Project Manager Victor Krabbendam se reunieron con el Presidente de AURA, Matt Mountain y otros en Chile la semana pasada para discutir los planes de coordinación de recursos entre Gémini, NOAO y LSST, durante la época de operaciones LSST. Una estructura organizacional se imagina, combinando recursos co-localizados de AURA para que puedan ser eficientemente desplegado en apoyo de los observatorios de AURA del hemisferio sur.

Bill Gressler ha estado en Chile esta semana e informa que 3 de los 16 sectores de las placas incrustadas de la cúpula se han alineado en las formas de concreto del Lower enclosure. El ensamblaje de la torre de elevación Pflow está progresando, con 3 de 6 columnas de estructura de acero instaladas (este es el primer 1/3 de la Torre de ~90 pies) con más de 12 columnas largas restantes. En preparación para el embarque de los componentes del TMA y coating plant a Chile, Bill se reunió con representantes del puerto de Coquimbo y representantes de proveedores para entender mejor las posibles configuraciones de embarque.

El grupo ombuds de LSST tuvo su reunión mensual con Steve Kahn, Beth Willman, y Victor Krabbendam esta semana. Los temas de discusión incluyeron invitando a nuevos ombudspeople de nuestros colegas en Chile, la moral del equipo, y la cultura del lugar de trabajo.  

Varios miembros del equipo LSST asistieron a ADASS XXI Conference, seguido de IVOA Interoperability Workshop, la semana pasada en Trieste, Italia. Los programas y las presentaciones están disponibles en sus respectivos sitios web, vinculados en la frase anterior.

Un taller financiado por LSSTC se acaba de anunciar en el LSST Community Forum: "Preparándose para hacer ciencia con datos LSST" se celebrará en Lyon, Francia, donde IN2P3 computing center está ubicado, del 12 de junio al 16 de mayo de 2017. El sitio del evento event website  está en línea y se actualizará cuando se disponga de información adicional.

Tim Jenness (actualmente el Deputy System Architect) pasará a ser Ingeniero de Sistemas en Gestión de Datos (DM) provisorio. En los próximos meses, Tim estará involucrado en un trabajo importante sobre requisitos del sistema DM, trazabilidad y reducción de verificación. Este cambio divide algunas de las tareas de Ingeniería de Sistemas DM y en la Arquitectura del Sistema DM, permitiendo a Tim centrarse en los procesos que se ejecutan en su lugar y para que el sistema final (muy complejo), pueda ser construido y verificado por un gran equipo.

La determinación de la estrategia de óptima observación para alcanzar simultáneamente múltiples objetivos científicos de LSST se realiza a través de un complejo algoritmo de planificación - el "Programador". El programador es el cerebro de la exploración LSST y ahora está en construcción como parte del grupo de Telescopio y Sitio (T&S).  Atención: el trabajo del Científico de Exploración LSST, quien encabezará el esfuerzo planificador en el nivel de proyecto, aparecerá en noviembre de AAS y en el registro de trabajo en LSST Hiring Page.

El Dr. Eric Bellm, actualmente científico del proyecto para el Zwicky Transient Facility proyecto (ZTF) En Caltech, ha aceptado sumarse a LSST como Lider de Ciencias nivel 1 para DM, empezando el 1 de febrero, 2017. Él va a asumir este papel en la Universidad de Washington, donde él se une al Departamento de Astronomía Department of Astronomy como un profesor de investigación. Los intereses de investigación de Eric abarcan una serie de temas, incluyendo binarias compactas y GRBs. Su amplia experiencia en exploración de dominio del tiempo, así como la instrumentación hará una gran adición a un ya fuerte equipo de UW.
