The LSST Science Advisory Committee has posted a series of recommendations to the LSST Project Office, on topics including the decision-making process for deciding on the LSST cadence and the selection of deep-drilling fields.  Also available are presentations to the SAC concerning the above topics, as well as the LSST Science User Interface and an MSIP-funded program led by the Las Cumbres Observatory.

CCD acceptance testing continues at Brookhaven National Laboratory using one of the two single-sensor electro-optical test stands. A priority of the project is to accumulate enough sensors to begin performance-testing of the science-raft tower module.

A workshop titled “Getting to Know the LSST” will take place at next week’s AAS/DPS meeting.  Deputy Director Beth Willman will present a summary and status of LSST at the workshop, which has been scheduled on Monday, 17 October from 4:30 to 6:30pm in Ballroom C at the Pasadena Convention Center. 

University of Washington hosted a meeting of the managers of Data Management software teams last week. The group focused on finalizing definitions of work packages and cost estimation needed for the upcoming baseline change request related to the DM replan.

At last week’s meeting in Tucson, the LSSTC Board added Susan Hutchison, former Executive Director of the Charles and Lisa Simonyi Fund for Arts and Sciences, and Farnaz Khadem to the Board as appointed members, along with newly elected members Harry Ferguson and Larry Gladney.  Representatives Larry Ramsey and Fred Gilman have rotated off the Board and the NOAO representative has changed from David Silva to Adam Bolton.

Interested participants at next week’s AAS/DPS meeting are encouraged to attend the LSSTC-funded Solar System Science Collaboration meeting on Wednesday from 4:30 to 6:30 pm in room C107 of the Pasadena Convention Center.

PERSONNEL NEWS

Paul Domagala has joined the Data Management subsystem at NCSA as the Research Computing Facility Service Manager.  Paul will be the primary liaison to users of LSST services operating at NCSA to support construction activities. As new Archive services are provided for construction, commissioning, and eventually operations, Paul will manage the services to assure that they continue to meet the needs of the project.  Before coming to LSST, Paul spent 25 years at Argonne National Lab designing and managing scientific IT services for major projects and collaborations.

Yi Mei has joined the Data Management subsystem at IPAC as a senior application developer to work on the design, development, and testing of the Science User Interface. Prior to joining LSST, Yi spent about ten years as a system engineer at NASA’s Herschel Science Center.

At SLAC, Antone Bullock has agreed to step into the role of Design Coordinator for LSST camera work at SLAC following Don Arnett’s retirement.  Antone has been involved in the camera project as a lead mechanical designer for both the cryostat and camera body for some time, and recently become much more involved in systems integration design efforts and overall camera design issues, so stepping into this new role is a good fit for the camera team and him.

The latest LSST job posting is for an Integration and Test Engineering Manager at SLAC.

El Comité Asesor de Ciencias de LSST ha publicado una serie de recomendaciones series of recommendations a la oficina del proyecto LSST, sobre temas como el proceso de toma de decisiones para decidir sobre la cadencia LSST y la selección de campos de perforación profunda. También están disponibles las presentaciones del SAC sobre los temas antes mencionados, así como la Interfaz de Usuario Científico de LSST y un programa financiado por MSIP dirigido por Las Cumbres Observatory. 

Pruebas de aceptación CCD continúan en el Laboratorio Nacional Brookhaven utilizando uno de los dos sensores único electro-óptico stands de prueba. Pablo Domagala se ha sumado al subsistema de gestión de datos en el NCSA como Research Computing Facility Service Manager. The LSST Communications Code of Conduct (CoC) was posted this week on our public website Participation Page.  It provides guidelines for those using the LSST communication tools, specifically the Community Forum and the Slack instant messaging application, coming soon.  The CoC will help achieve our goal of promoting effective communication between the project and the broad science community.  LSST welcomes passionate, detailed, thoughtful disagreement, and discussion of ideas within an inclusive, collaborative environment.

The report from the May 2016 Kavli Futures workshop on "Maximizing Science in the Era of LSST" is available for download here.  This study, funded by The Kavli Foundation and endorsed by NSF/AST, quantifies and prioritizes the supporting capabilities needed to maximize the science enabled by LSST. 

A popular poster that LSST has used at several meetings is now available for download in several sizes. It illustrates four aspects of LSST: Science Discovery, Big Data, STEM Education, and Characterization of Near Earth Objects. You are invited to download whatever size best fits your classroom, office, or living room wall!

Co-funded by LSSTC, NASA NEO office, and the B612 Foundation, a recent workshop at the University of Washington (Oct 3-4, 2016) gathered Near-Earth Object experts from the leading NEO projects and missions (Pan-STARRS, LSST, Catalina Sky Survey, NEOCam, Sentinel), as well as a few theorists and modelers. The main outcome of this meeting was a roadmap for community-based effort to produce an open-source tool for simulating and interpreting observations of Near-Earth Objects and other asteroid populations, on timescale of about a year.

PERSONNEL NEWS

Chris Morrison has joined the UW/LSST team and will spend part of his time further developing methods to estimate redshifts in the context of LSST-DESC.  Chris was previously a post-doc at the Argelander-Institut für Astronomie at the University of Bonn developing techniques to measure weak lensing magnification and methods to estimate galaxy redshifts from 2-point clustering statistics.

There are 15 jobs posted on the LSST Hiring Site.  The most recent addition is for a Project Manager for the LSST Camera being built at SLAC Linear Accelerator Laboratory.  As a continuing SLAC employee, it is expected that the successful candidate will have opportunities to lead future SLAC projects after the completion of the LSST Camera project.

Co-financiado por la LSSTC, NASA NEO office, y la Fundación B612, un reciente seminario en la Universidad de Washington (Octubre 3-4, 2016), reunió a expertos de Objetos Cercanos a la Tierra de los principales proyectos y misiones NEO (Pan-STARRS, LSST, Catalina Sky Survey, NEOCam, centinela), así como unos teóricos y modelistas. El principal resultado de esta reunión fue una guía para el esfuerzo de la comunidad para producir una herramienta de código abierto para la simulación y la interpretación de observaciones de Objetos Cercanos a la Tierra y a otras poblaciones de asteroides, en el plazo de un año aproximadamente.

Chris Morrison se ha unido al equipo UW/LSST  y va a dedicar parte de su tiempo a desarrollar métodos para estimar redshifts en el contexto del LSST-DESC. Building the LSST takes a lot of engineering and steel, much of which is coming together in Tucson, AZ.  A variety of local vendors, from the heavy-metal experts at CAID Industries to the electronics assemblers at Beacon Group, have a piece of the action.  Read how LSST contributes to the local economy in this September 25th Arizona Daily Star article.

The LSST Project’s second project capturing a “Day in the Life of LSST Construction” will take place on October 20, 2016.  Our previous production from March 2016 can be seen here, showing the variety of skills that goes into building the LSST as well as the people who do the work. 

LSST Systems Administrator Iain Goodenow will be out of the office the entire month of October, and not available by phone or email.  During October and always, remember to send email to lsst-sysadmins@lsst.org rather than a specific individual for any IT issue or inquiry. 

Project Manager Victor Krabbendam and Project Controls Specialist Kevin Long are on their way back from Chile, having spent a week interacting with NSF representatives, on-site vendors, and all 11 members of the local staff in the LSST Chile office. 

This week’s Telescope Mount Assembly Test Verification Review included a project milestone:  the first “official” integration of a vendor subsystem with the LSST visit-simulator controls software, the software that instructs the telescope to move to a new location on the sky.  Read more here. 

PERSONNEL NEWS

Ellen Bechtol has joined LSST as the EPO Evaluation Specialist in the Tucson Project Office.  She will routinely evaluate the EPO program for efficiency, effectiveness, and appeal as well as assist with EPO program development.  Ellen holds an M.A. in Museum Studies from John F. Kennedy University and is coming to us from Madison, Wisconsin where she was serving as Interim Director of the Madison Science Museum and providing EPO evaluation for the Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center (WIPAC), among other projects.

Keith Bechtol has joined the Project Office as an Associate Scientist.  Keith will support Project science activities, including commissioning, and will also collaborate with Deputy Director Beth Willman and Research Associate Jeff Carlin on pre-cursor LSST science investigations.  Keith’s background is in particle astrophysics.  He has also played a leadership role in the discoveries of new Milky Way dwarfs with the Dark Energy Survey data. Keith joins our team from a John Bahcall Fellowship at WIPAC.

Joshua Meyers has joined the LSST DM team at Princeton as part of Princeton West. Josh was a postdoc in Pat Burchat’s group at Stanford before he joined Princeton a couple of weeks ago and will now be working in DM's Data Release Processing (DRP) group with Jim Bosch and Robert Lupton, under the watchful eye of John Swinbank. He's currently thinking about point-spread function estimation, and collaborating with the DES team who are wrestling with some of the same problems -- but who knows what his future holds?

Tom Markiewicz has joined the camera team at SLAC to support the science sensors procurement and sensor acceptance. Tom joins the team from the SLAC accelerator directorate.

Ellen Bechtol se ha sumado LSST como Especialista de Evaluación de EPO en la Oficina del Proyecto en Tucson. Ella va a evaluar sistemáticamente el programa de EPO para su eficiencia, efectividad y apelación, así como ayudar con el desarrollo del programa de EPO. Ellen tiene una maestría en Museología de la Universidad John F. Kennedy y está llegando a nosotros desde Madison, Wisconsin, donde se desempeñaba como Director Interino del Museo de Ciencias Madison, y proporcionando evaluación EPO para el Centro de Astrofísica de Partículas IceCube de Wisconsin (WIPAC), entre otros proyectos.

Keith Bechtol se unió a la Oficina del Proyecto como Socio Científico. A two-day Operations Planning Workshop is taking place this week project-wide, with primary sites of participation including Tucson, SLAC, NCSA, and the University of Washington.  This workshop is part of an operations planning sprint, in preparation for an LSST-commissioned review of its operations plan at the beginning of November. 

The AURA Management Council for LSST (AMCL) met last week in Tucson to hear updates on project status, and to discuss the Data Management re-planning effort, operations planning, and LSST governance during operations. 

Beth Willman will represent LSST at next week’s AURA Board of Directors meeting taking place next week in Boulder, CO.  Updates on each AURA facility (Gemini, LSST, NOAO, NSO, STScI) will be complimented by discussions on topics such as data science at AURA centers. 

Project Manager Victor Krabbendam will be in Chile next week to review progress on the summit.  The Cerro Pachón webcam shows progress in 15-minute intervals; current construction images are also featured in our online image gallery.

Several members of the Telescope & Site team will be in Madrid, Spain next week for a review of the verification plans for the Telescope Mount Assembly. 

The LSST Ombudperson group met recently to discuss both general ombuds activities and workplace culture related results from the LSST 2016 Communication and Climate survey.  We recognized that the current Ombuds team lacks coverage in the mid-west and east coast, and in Spanish language support. We invite the LSST community to contribute nominations for additional Ombuds to fill in these gaps.  Email nominations to Beth Willman (bwillman@lsst.org).

El Taller de Planificación de Operaciones de dos días está tomando lugar esta semana a través del proyecto entero, con sitios primarios de participación, incluyendo Tucson, SLAC, NCSA, y la Universidad de Washington. Este taller es parte de una planificación de las operaciones de sprint, en preparación para una revisión de su plan de operaciones a cargo de LSST a principios de noviembre.  

El Consejo de Gerencia de AURA para LSST (AMCL) se reunió la semana pasada en Tucson para conocer las actualizaciones sobre el estado del proyecto, y discutir esfuerzo de re-planificación de Data Management, planificación de operaciones, y gestión de LSST durante las operaciones.  

Beth Willman representará a LSST la semana que viene en la Junta de Directores de AURA que tendrá lugar la próxima semana en Boulder, CO.  Actualizaciones de cada instalación de AURA (Gemini, LSST, NOAO, ONN, STScI) serán complementadas con discusiones sobre temas como datos de ciencia en centros de AURA.  

EL Gerente del Proyecto, Victor Krabbendam estará en Chile la próxima semana para revisar los progresos realizados en el sitio. El grupo Ombudperson de LSST se reunió recientemente para discutir actividades en general y los resultados relacionados con la cultura del lugar de trabajo de la encuesta de Comunicación y Clima de LSST 2016. Hemos reconocido que el actual equipo no tiene cobertura en el medio oeste y la costa este, y ayuda en español.  LSST hosted a fun and productive Citizen Science Summit this past week with multiple guests, including: Chris Lintott and Laura Trouille (Zooniverse), Jennifer Shirk (Citizen Science Association), Rob Semper (Exploratorium), Sander Dieleman (Google DeepMind), Jeff Carlin (LSST), and many more.  Ideas and notes were captured on both the Community site and Google Docs.  LSST EPO looks forward to continuing the conversation and building relationships with the citizen science community in the years to come!

With the Early Registration Deadline of September 25th approaching, we remind you of three LSST-related events taking place at the January 2017 meeting of the AAS.  The ZTF Community workshop and AGN Science Collaboration Meeting take place on Tuesday, January 3rd and the LSST Open House is Wednesday January 4th.  To avoid clashing with the New Year’s Day holiday weekend, AAS 229 will take place Tuesday–Saturday, 3-7 January 2017, rather than the usual Sunday–Thursday, meaning you have to arrive early for the ZTF and AGN workshops.

LSSTC has provided funding to the NOAO EPO group for their Big Data Academy for High School Students.  The workshop will take place this academic year and is funded through LSSTC’s Enabling Science program. 

The LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration has now hosted four Dark Energy Schools, held the day before the semi-annual collaboration meetings. Many of the lessons are not specific to dark energy science and could be of interest to the broader LSST community. All materials, including videos of the interactive lessons, are hosted on this public DESC DE School webpage.  The DE Schools are supported in part by the LSSTC Enabling Science program.

Michael (“Tucker”) Booth has joined the Telescope and Site (T&S) team in Tucson supporting the opto-mechanical integration activities for the M1M3 mirror assembly effort.  Michael will perform varied engineering, scheduling, and coordination tasks to support the timely delivery of T&S subsystems from vendor facilities to the LSST summit in Chile. A second role will be to work closely with the T&S Control Account Managers (CAMs) who are responsible for overall coordination of the T&S subsystems.

LSST organizó una divertida y productiva Cumbre Ciudadana de Ciencia la semana pasada con varios invitados, incluyendo: Chris Lintott y Laura Trouille (Zooniverse), Jennifer Shirk (Citizen Science Association), Rob Semper (Exploratorium), Sander Dieleman (Google DeepMind), Jeff Carlin (LSST), y muchos más. Ideas y notas fueron capturadas en Community site y en Google Docs. EPO LSST espera continuar la conversación y establecer relaciones con la comunidad de ciencia ciudadana en los próximos años!

Con la inscripción temprana con fecha límite del 25 de septiembre aproximándose, le recordamos de tres eventos relacionados con LSST tomando lugar en la reunión de AAS en enero de 2017. ZTF Community workshop y AGN Science Collaboration Meeting tendrán lugar el martes 3 de enero y el LSST Open House es el miércoles 4 de enero. Para evitar chocar con las vacaciones de fin de semana del Día de Año Nuevo, AAS 229 tendrá lugar martes a sábado, 3 a 7 de enero de 2017, en vez de domingo a jueves, lo que significa que tienes que llegar antes para los talleres de ZTF y AGN.

LSSTC ha proporcionado financiación para el grupo EPO NOAO para su Academia de Grandes Datos para Estudiantes de Escuela Secundaria. El taller se llevará a cabo este año académico y se financia a través del Enabling Science program de LSSTC.  

La Colaboración Cientifica de Energía Oscura de LSST ya ha organizado cuatro Escuelas de Energía Oscura, el día antes de las reuniones de colaboración semi-anual. Muchas de las lecciones no son específicas a la ciencia de energía oscura podría ser de interés para la comunidad LSST más amplia. Todos los materiales, incluidos los vídeos de las lecciones interactivas, están la página pública DESC DE School webpage. Las Escuelas de EO están apoyados en parte por el LSSTC Enabling Science program.

Michael ("Tucker ") Booth se ha sumado al equipo de Telescopio y Sitio (T&S) en Tucson, apoyar las actividades de integración opto-mecánica para el esfuerzo de ensamblaje del espejo M1M3. Michael realizará variadas tareas de ingeniería, programación y coordinación para apoyar la entrega oportuna de subsistemas de T&S desde las instalaciones del proveedor hasta la cumbre de LSST en Chile. Una segunda función será trabajar estrechamente con el T&S Control Account Managers (CAMs) que son responsables de la coordinación general de los subsistemas de T&S.

Jorge Vergara and Francisco Forster are visiting the University of Washington (UW) from the Center for Mathematical Modeling at the University of Chile. Jorge and Francisco are working with Colin Slater and Andy Connolly on developing new machine learning techniques for identifying artifacts within difference images (separating the wheat from the chaff). Jorge will be visiting UW until the end of September.

The AURA Management Council for LSST (AMCL) will meet in Tucson next week to provide oversight and advocacy for the management of the LSST. 

Also next week there will be a Manufacturing Readiness Review (MRR) of the LSST Camera Science Raft Sub-system at Brookhaven National Laboratory.  This MRR is a follow-on to two previous FDR-level reviews in 2015, meant to target recent updates to the electro-mechanical design of the Raft Tower Module as well as the Science Raft subsystem’s readiness to procure, fabricate and assemble the same.

On Cerro Pachón, construction is moving forward on the summit facility with addition of the first sections of blue steel structure added to the existing concrete foundation. These structures define the southern end of the facility and will support the exterior siding and roof on the building. Extensive concrete form work, scaffolding, and rebar are evident as the lower enclosure and telescope pier begin to project high above the summit plateau as seen in the most recent images from the site.

Now that the M1M3 mirror cell has been welded and stress relieved, the initial machining of the M1M3 cell weldment has begun at CAID Industries in Tucson.  Today’s blog posting includes a short video of the machining of the +4000 interface holes and precision interfaces between the cell and the glass mirror and the cell and the coating chamber.

PERSONNEL NEWS

Krzysztof Findeisen has joined the Data Management group as a Research Scientist at UW. He previously worked on developing scalable data analysis tools for validating the first Gaia data release and on analyzing variable star light curves with the Palomar Transient Factory. He will be contributing to LSST's nightly data analysis pipeline.

Meredith Rawls is joining the LSST Data Management team at the University of Washington as a postdoctoral research associate. Meredith completed her PhD at New Mexico State University this year, studying how red giant eclipsing binaries can be useful benchmarks for asteroseismology. She also holds degrees from San Diego State University and Harvey Mudd College. Meredith is delighted to return to her home state of Washington and apply her experience in programming and stellar astronomy.

In our Chile office, Oscar Nũnez has joined the LSST team as Technical Coordinator for Facility Infrastructure. Oscar is an Industrial Engineer with 34 years’ experience in the area of technical maintenance of industrial equipment and personnel management, most recently as Head of Facilities Operations at CTIO.

Risk Prevention Engineer Sandra Romero has transitioned to a full-time position with LSST as Safety Coordinator after originally joining our team in Chile in late 2015.  Sandra’s work experience includes more than ten years as a safety expert in the mining and construction industries; she previously worked as Safety Coordinator at Gemini Observatory.

Jorge Vergara y Francisco Forster están visitando la Universidad de Washington (UW) desde el Center for Mathematical Modeling at the University of Chile. Jorge y Francisco están trabajando con Colin Slater y Andy Connolly en el desarrollo de nuevas técnicas de aprendizaje de máquinas para identificar artefactos en imágenes de diferencia (separando la paja del trigo). Jorge visitará la UW hasta fines de septiembre.

El Consejo de Gerencia de AURA para LSST (AMCL) se reunirá la próxima semana en Tucson para proporcionar la supervisión y apoyo para la gestión de LSST.  

También la próxima semana habrá una Revisión de la Preparación de Fabricación (RRM) de LSST Camera Science Raft Sub-system en el Laboratorio Nacional Brookhaven. Este MRR es una continuación de dos anteriores revisiones de nivel FDR en 2015, destinado para dirigir las actualizaciones recientes de procedimientos de disposición para el diseño electromecánico del Módulo Science Raft, para fabricar y armar la misma. 

En Cerro Pachón, la construcción está avanzando en las instalaciones de la cumbre con la adición de las primeras secciones de estructura de acero añadida a la fundación de hormigón existente. Estas estructuras definen el extremo sur de las instalaciones y apoyará las fachadas exteriores y en el techo del edificio building. Extenso trabajo de hormigón, andamios y rebar son evidentes ahora que el lower enclosure y telescope pier comienzan a proyectarse por encima de la meseta de la cumbre, como se ve en las imágenes más recientes del sitio most recent images from the site. 

Ahora que el M1M3 mirror cell has sido soldada welded and stress relieved, el mecanizado inicial de la soldadura celular del M1M3 ha comenzado en CAID Industries en Tucson. En el blog posting de hoy se incluye un vídeo corto de la mecanización de la interfaz de agujeros +4000 e interfaces de precisión entre la celda y el cristal del espejo y de la cámara de recubrimiento.

Krzysztof Findeisen se ha unido al grupo de Gestión de Datos como Investigador Científico en UW. Anteriormente, trabajó en el desarrollo de herramientas de análisis de datos escalable para validar el primer lanzamiento de los datos de Gaia y en el análisis de las curvas de luminosidad de las estrellas variables con el Palomar fábrica transitoria. Meredith Rawls Se unirá al equipo de Gestión de Datos de LSST en la Universidad de Washington como investigadora asociada postdoctoral. Meredith completó su doctorado en la Universidad Estatal de Nuevo México este año, estudiando cómo binarias gigantes rojas eclipsando pueden ser puntos de referencia útiles para la sismología estelar. Ella también es licenciada por la Universidad Estatal de San Diego y Harvey Mudd College. Meredith está encantada de volver a su estado natal de Washington y aplicar su experiencia en programación estelar y astronomía.

Oscar es Ingeniero Industrial con 34 años de experiencia en el área de mantenimiento técnico de los equipos industriales y la gestión del personal, más recientemente como director de operaciones en las instalaciones de CTIO.

Ingeniera en Prevención de Riesgos Sandra Romero ha pasado a una posición de tiempo completo en LSST como Coordinadora de Seguridad después de que originalmente se unió a nuestro equipo joining our team en Chile a fines de 2015. La experiencia laboral de Sandra incluye más de 10 años como experta en seguridad en industrias mineras y de la construcción; anteriormente trabajó como Coordinadora de Seguridad en el Observatorio Gemini.

LSST EPO will be hosting an informal, online Citizen Science Summit with special guest Chris Lintott (Zooniverse) on September 12 & 13.  If this topic interests you, please join us (locally or remote) and participate in the conversation!  More details can be found here.

REOSC has been awarded a contract for the Broad Band Anti-reflection coating to be applied to the L1, L2 and L3 camera lenses. This coating minimizes light reflection at the air/fused silica interface for each lens and improves the overall throughput while reducing straylight. A kickoff meeting will take place September 22nd. 

CORPORATION NEWS

Activities funded by LSSTC through their Enabling Science initiatives are described online and included in the calendar below.  Three new activities were added this week:  A NEO Survey Workshop at the University of Washington in early October, LSST DESC Hack Week in November at Carnegie Mellon University, and another LSST DESC Hack Week in April 2017 at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. 

PERSONNEL NEWS

Giovanni M. Corvetto has joined LSST as a Safety Coordinator that will focus on the Base Facility Addition Project in La Serena. He has more than 5 years’ experience as a Risk Prevention Expert and is also certified by the Chilean Ministry of Health. Giovanni has extensive experience in the field of construction and mine drilling services while working in such places as Iceland and Canada.

REOSC Se ha adjudicado un contrato para la Banda Ancha recubrimiento Antirreflejos para aplicarse a los lentes de cámaras de L1, L2 y L3. Este recubrimiento minimiza la reflexión de la luz en el aire/interfaz de sílice fundida para cada lente y mejora el rendimiento general reduciendo straylight. Una reunión inicial tendrá lugar el 22 de septiembre.

Giovanni M. Corvetto se ha sumado a LSST como Coordinador de Seguridad que se centrará en el Proyecto de Adición de la Instalación Base en La Serena. Él tiene más de 5 años de experiencia como experto en Prevención de Riesgos y también está certificado por el Ministerio de Salud de Chile. Giovanni tiene una amplia experiencia en el campo de la construcción y en servicios de perforación minera mientras trabajando en lugares como Islandia y Canadá.
