Registration for the LSST Project and Community Workshop 2016 (LSST 2016) stands at 230 participants, and closes TODAY for both the workshop and hotel block (although we’ll keep it open through Monday for last minute registrations).  The registration page is here.

All subsystems are consumed with preparations for the NSF/DOE Joint Status Review.  A Director’s Review, essentially a dry run, will be held at SLAC next week in advance of the actual review August 16 – 18 in Tucson.

We’ve just received word that the LSST Town Hall at AAS 229 is scheduled for Wednesday, 4 January 2017.  This Town Hall will describe the complimentary missions of the LSST Project, LSST Corporation, and LSST Science Collaborations, highlighting ways for community members to get involved in LSST now, and soliciting community feedback.

LSST is making plans to hold community workshop at the DPS 48 / EPSC 11 Meeting in Pasadena, CA.  More information will be circulated as it is known.  

PFlow Industries performed a successful setup and test on July 18th of their platform lift, which will be installed in the summit facility to transport the LSST mirrors and camera.  The lift platform is pictured with the test load of approximately 140,000 lbs of concrete blocks.  As witnessed by Bill Gressler, Jeff Barr, Freddy Muñoz and the PFlow engineering team, the lift functioned smoothly and flawlessly under load and was also tested for safety interlocks and response to fault conditions. The entire lift assembly will now be disassembled, painted, and packed for shipment to the construction site - anticipated to arrive in October and begin its installation in November.

CORPORATION NEWS

Oxford University hosted a Dark Energy Science Collaboration (DESC) Meeting and an LSST Galaxies Science Collaboration Workshop this week.  The DESC Meeting included an installment of the LSST Dark Energy School.  The Galaxies Workshop brought the US and UK ‘Galaxies’ communities together, for the first time since the UK joined LSST in December 2015.

PERSONNEL NEWS

SLAC is hosting two students this summer: Cole Jones, a rising junior mechanical engineering major from USC, and Ben Bartlett, a rising senior physics/computer science major from Caltech.  Cole and Ben are working on the readout electronic boards (REB) production assembly and test effort. The students are gaining experience in prototyping and qualification testing as well as the development of procedures and writing CCS scripts for automated testing.

Two new jobs were added to the LSST hiring page this week: a Junior Integration Engineer and a Software Engineer, both in the Telescope & Site group.  LSST continues to seek top talent to work in a team environment that inspires excellence!

Todos los subsistemas están consumidos con los preparativos de la Revision de Estado Conjunta de NSF/DOE. Una Revisión del Director, esencialmente un ensayo general, se realizará la próxima semana en SLAC antes de la revisión real el 16 - 18 de Agosto en Tucson.

Acabamos de recibir la noticia de que el LSST Town Hall en AAS 229 está agendado para el Miércoles 4 de Enero, 2017. Este Town Hall describirá las misiones complementarias del Proyecto LSST, Corporación LSST y Colaboraciones Científicas de LSST, destacando maneras para que los miembros de la comunidad se involucren con LSST ahora, y así solicitar retroalimentación de la comunidad.

PFlow Industries realizo una instalación y prueba exitosa el 18 de Julio de su plataforma de elevación, que se instalará en la cumbre para transportar los espejos y cámara de LSST. La plataforma está en la imagen lift platform is pictured con la carga de prueba de aproximadamente 140.000 libras de bloques de hormigón. Como visto por Bill Gressler, Jeff Barr, Freddy Muñoz y el equipo de ingeniería de PFlow, el ascensor funciono sin tropiezos y a la perfección bajo carga y también fue probado con los enclavamientos de seguridad y respuesta a las condiciones de falla. Todo el conjunto del elevador ahora será desmontado, pintado, y embalado para su envío al sitio de construcción, se prevé que llegara en octubre y su instalación comenzara en noviembre.

La reunión DESC incluyó una entrega del LSST Dark Energy School.  El Galaxies Workshop junto a las comunidades de 'Galaxias' de EE.UU. y REINO UNIDO, por primera vez desde que el Reino Unido se unió a LSST en Diciembre de 2015.

SLAC tendrá a dos estudiantes este verano: Cole Jones, un estudiante de Ingeniería Mecánica de USC y Ben Bartlett, un estudiante de Ciencias Computacionales/Física de Caltech. Cole y Ben están trabajando en la ensamblaje de producción y esfuerzos de prueba en tableros electrónicos readabout. Estos estudiantes están ganando experiencia en prototipos y pruebas de calificación, así como también en el desarrollo de procedimientos y escribiendo scripts CCS para pruebas automáticas.

Registration for LSST2016 stands at over 200, with deadlines for both registration and access to the LSST discounted hotel block extended one week and closing on July 22nd.  Registration page is here.

Telescope & Site Manager Bill Gressler is traveling this week, first visiting Harris in Rochester, NY for the monthly status review on the secondary mirror and mirror cell, and then to PFlow Industry in Oak Creek, WI, for final acceptance testing of the Pflow vertical lift, the big “elevator” that will be used to transport the LSST primary/tertiary mirror from the observing floor to the maintenance area in the summit facility building. 

A number of science grade sensors have been received by the camera team and are undergoing acceptance testing at BNL. In addition, two reviews take place at SLAC next week including a corner raft Manufacturing Readiness Review.

Data Management: Version 12.0 of the LSST software stack has been released.  This release features implementations of algorithms originally developed in the Hyper-SuprimeCam pipeline, in addition to many other improvements.  Learn more on the Community Forum here.  

Andy Connolly gave a well-received (and well attended) talk at LSST@Europe2, discussing the History of the Universe and explaining how and why LSST is needed to answer the biggest questions.  The video of the talk is here and of the round-table that followed here.

CORPORATION NEWS

LSSTC is pleased to announce that a consortium of Kentucky universities and state colleges has been approved as a new institutional member by the Corporation’s Board of Directors. The consortium’s official name is the Kentucky Association for Research with LSST, or KARL.

A workshop on Precision Astronomy with Fully Depleted CCDs (PACCD2016) will take place at Brookhaven National Lab 1-2 December, 2016.  The workshop will have a large representation of LSST people and has received financial support from LSSTC. 

The LSSTC Data Science Fellowship Program’s first class of fellows is ready to begin their week-long coursework on August 1st.  Sixteen students make up the class (bios here) and were selected from a pool of over 230 applicants. This LSSTC-funded program is designed to teach essential data science skills required for LSST science including statistics, machine learning, and scalable programming. 

PERSONNEL NEWS

James Howard has joined the LSST Telescope and Site team working with Jacques Sebag as an Instrumentation Mechanical Design Engineer.  James will perform varied tasks to design and to oversee the fabrication, testing, installation and use of the instrumentation required during the telescope integration and tests (I&T) on the LSST summit site on Cerro Pachón, in Chile.  For the past 12 years he was a Principal Mechanical Engineer at the Large Binocular Telescope, where he was responsible for designing, implementing and commissioning various subsystems.

Grissel (“Chris”) Coleman has joined the LSST Telescope and Site team as Deputy Manager for Project Controls. Chris comes to us after providing senior management oversight at Raytheon and Honeywell, focusing on project planning and earned value management. She will be working with Bill Gressler and Sandrine Thomas to coordinate work flow and resources to support the integrated construction effort.

Eli Rykoff has joined the Data Management team as part of the Princeton-based Data Release Production group. He will be contributing to LSST's calibration products and annual data release pipelines. Eli will be located at SLAC, where he was already an employee, and will spend half his time continuing his research there on photometric calibration, galaxy cluster finding, and cluster cosmology in the context of DES and LSST-DESC.

El Gerente de Telescopio & Sitio, Bill Gressler viaja esta semana, visitando primero Harris en Rochester, NY para la revisión mensual del estado del espejo secundario y la celda del espejo y, después a PFlow Industry en Oak Creek, WI, para las pruebas definitivas de aceptación del elevador vertical de Pflow, el gran "Elevador", que se utilizará para el transporte del espejo primario/terciario de LSST desde el piso de observación a la zona de mantenimiento en el edificio de las instalaciones de la cumbre.  

Un número de sensores de grado científico han sido recibidos por el equipo de cámara y están sometidos a las pruebas de aceptación en BNL. Además, dos revisiones tendrán lugar en SLAC la próxima semana incluyendo una revisión de la preparación de fabricación de corner raft.

Gestión de datos: la versión 12.0 del LSST pila de software ha sido liberado.  Esta versión incluye implementaciones de algoritmos desarrollados originalmente en la leva Hyper-Suprimecanalización, además de muchas otras mejoras. Obtenga más información sobre el Foro de la Comunidad aquí here.

LSSTC se complace en anunciar que un consorcio de universidades e institutos del estado de Kentucky han sido aprobados como nuevos miembros institucionales por el Directorio de la Corporación. El nombre oficial del consorcio es la Asociación para la Investigación de Kentucky con LSST o KARL.

Un taller sobre Astronomía de Precisión con CCDs Completamente Agotados Precision Astronomy with Fully Depleted CCDs (PACCD2016) se llevará a cabo en el Laboratorio Nacional Brookhaven el 1-2 de Diciembre, 2016. El taller contará con una amplia representación de personas de LSST y ha recibido apoyo financiero de LSSTC.  

La primera clase de becario del Programa de Becas de Datos Científicos de LSSTC LSSTC Data Science Fellowship Program’s están listos para comenzar sus cursos de una semana de duración el 01 de Agosto. Dieciséis estudiantes conforman la clase (biografías aquí here) quienes fueron seleccionados de un grupo de más de 230 solicitantes. Este programa financiado por LSSTC está diseñado para enseñar datos científicos esenciales para la ciencia de LSST, incluyendo estadísticas, aprendizaje en maquinaria y programación escalable.

James Howard se ha sumado al equipo de Telescopio y Sitio de LSST trabajando con Jacques Sebag como Ingeniero de Diseño Mecánico de Instrumentación. James realizara variadas tareas para diseñar y supervisar la fabricación, prueba, instalación y utilización de la instrumentación necesaria durante la integración y pruebas del telescopio (I+T) en el sitio de LSST en Cerro Pachón, Chile. Durante los últimos 12 años fue el principal Ingeniero Mecánico en el Gran Telescopio Binocular, donde fue responsable del diseño, la aplicación y la puesta en marcha de diversos subsistemas

Grissel ("Chris Coleman") se ha sumado al equipo de Telescopio y Sitio de LSST como Directora Adjunta de Control del Proyecto. Chris llega a nosotros tras proporcionar supervisión superior de gestión en Raytheon y Honeywell, centrándose en la planificación de proyectos y gestión del valor acumulado. Ella estará trabajando con Bill Gressler y Sandrine Thomas para coordinar el flujo de trabajo y recursos para apoyar el esfuerzo de construcción integrada.

LSST was well represented at the 2016 SPIE meeting on Astronomical Telescopes & Instrumentation  in Edinburgh, Scotland last week with more than 40 LSST-related oral and poster presentations as well as an LSST booth in the exhibition hall.  More information and images here. 

Feedback to the Workplace Culture plenary session at the LSST 2015 Project and Community Workshop included requests for concrete advice on how to improve workplace culture.  In response, we have developed a special session scheduled for LSST 2016 at 9am on Tuesday, August 16:  

Rules of Engagement in Workplace Culture: How to Improve Trust & Communication - 

Trust and communication are essential factors to the success of any organization. This interactive plenary will  address issues related to engaging others within the workplace, giving and receiving feedback, using feedback as a tool for self-awareness and accountability, and building trust in our work relationships.

CORPORATION NEWS

LSST@Europe 2, which took place in Belgrade, Serbia, during the period of June 20-24, 2016, was attended by 81 participants (55 international, 26 from Serbia), including 15 students. The meeting included 36 talks and 13 poster presentations, 4 discussion workshops, and 2 expert tutorials on LSST image processing and simulation software given by members of the LSST Project. Many members of the LSST technical teams will be in Edinburgh, Scotland next week for an SPIE meeting on Astronomical Telescopes & Instrumentation; more than 40 LSST-related papers will be presented. 

Those interested are reminded that the LSST 2016 Project & Community Workshop registration deadline is July 25, same as the deadline for reserving a hotel room.  The Tuesday agenda has changed to include an LSST Summary and Status plenary of interest to all as well as encore presentations by LSST team members returning from next week’s SPIE meeting.

Now that the M1M3 mirror cell has been stress relieved, the cell has been relocated to the CAID Industries precision machining center. In parallel, the next effort will focus on completion of the M1M3 cart.  The cart rides along embedded steel rails and will be used to transport the integrated mirror and cell system from the telescope to the maintenance area of the summit facility building for maintenance and re-aluminizing of the mirror.  A M1M3 cart Preliminary Design Review was held at CAID this week with excellent results. 

More than 80 LSST team members met at SLAC June 13 – 15 for a camera workshop.  Later in the week there was a detailed session on the LSST commissioning camera, COMCAM, including an end-to-end walkthrough of the system, useful for identifying interfaces where further definition is required.    

Chairman Michael Strauss reports that the LSST Science Advisory Committee (SAC) met on Thursday, June 16; minutes have been posted.   Deputy Director Beth Willman responded to the questions and recommendations posted by the SAC on May 23, on topics including the distribution of Level 1 alerts to the community, the planning for science operations, and the contents and longevity of the yearly data releases.

Muchos de los miembros de los  equipos técnicos de LSST estarán en Edimburgo, Escocia la próxima semana para una reunión de SPIE sobre Telescopios & Instrumentación Astronómica,  SPIE meeting on Astronomical Telescopes & Instrumentation; más de 40 documentos relacionados con LSST serán presentados.  

Se recuerda a los interesados que la fecha límite de inscripción del Taller de Proyecto & Comunitario de LSST 2016 LSST 2016 Project & Community Workshop es el 25 de Julio, la misma que la fecha límite para reservar una habitación de hotel. La agenda del martes ha cambiado para incluir una sesión plenaria de Resumen y  Estado de LSST de interés para todos, así como  presentaciones encore por miembros del equipo LSST regresando de la reunión SPIE de la semana siguiente. 

Ahora que la celda del espejo M1M3 ha sido des estresada M1M3 mirror cell has been stress relieved, se ha trasladado al centro de mecanizado de precisión de las industrias CAID. En paralelo, el próximo esfuerzo se centrará en la finalización del carro de M1M3. El carro se desliza por rieles de acero incrustado y se utilizará para transportar el espejo integrado y sistema de celdas desde el telescopio a la zona de mantención del edificio de instalaciones de la cumbre para el mantenimiento y la re-aluminización del espejo. Un Revisión Preliminar del Diseño del carro M1M3 se realizó en CAID esta semana con excelentes resultados.  

Más de 80 miembros del equipo de LSST se reunieron en SLAC Junio 13 - 15 para un taller de cámara. En el transcurso de la semana hubo una sesión detallada sobre la cámara de puesta en marcha de LSST, COMCAM, incluyendo un tutorial del sistema de extremo-a-extremo, útil para identificar las interfaces en las que es necesaria una mayor definición.    

Presidente Michael Strauss informa que el Comité Asesor de Ciencias (SAC) de LSST se reunió el Jueves, 16 de Junio; las minutas minutes han sido publicadas. La Subdirectora Beth Willman respondió a las preguntas y recomendaciones questions and recommendations publicadas por SAC el 23 de Mayo, sobre temas como la distribución de alertas de nivel 1 a la comunidad, la planificación de operaciones científicas, y el contenido y la longevidad de los lanzamientos de datos anuales.

Registration is open for the LSST 2016 Project and Community Workshop taking place in Tucson, AZ, August 15 – 19.  The meeting sessions consist of three elements: plenary talks, breakout sessions, and an unconference. The plenary talks will be of broad interest to the scientific community, selected to be useful and informative both to newcomers and those familiar with LSST.  We invite all community participants to help develop ideas for breakout sessions, and with assistance from the collaborations we have initiated some threads in the LSST community forum to capture the conversation.  The starting point is here.  Additional detail has been added to the online agenda and information about ground transportation has been added to the website. 

Several members of the Telescope & Site team traveled to Mestre, Italy the week of June 6th to conduct a Final Design Review (FDR) of the LSST dome with vendor EIE Group.  LSST acknowledged the high quality of work done by the EIE team and appreciated the good working relationship that has been established.  Nine items were identified that require immediate formal action and closure in writing prior to receiving approval to move into construction.  All of these “Tier 1” items are quite doable and pose no significant issue moving forward.  Overall the quality and quantity of work completed to date was deemed adequate for FDR, and the review a success! 

Construction will soon begin on the LSST Base Facility Building in La Serena, a building on the AURA “recinto” for LSST, CTIO, SOAR, and AURA-O operations.  Works begins with a remodeling of the existing structure at the end of July 2016 and then construction of LSST Data Center and additional office space by January of 2017.   A website with information about the project, including a weekly plan of activities, documents, advisories, and a web cam will be developed to keep interested parties far and near informed.

Las sesiones plenarias serán de gran interés para la comunidad científica, seleccionadas para ser útil e informativas tanto para los recién llegados y aquellos que están familiarizados con LSST. Invitamos a todos los participantes de la comunidad a ayudar a desarrollar ideas para sesiones de grupo, y con la ayuda de las colaboraciones que hemos iniciado algunos hilos en el foro comunitario de LSST para captar la conversación. Several members of the Telescope & Site Varios miembros del equipo de Telescopio y Sitio viajaron a Mestre, Italia la semana del 6 de junio para llevar a cabo una revisión del diseño final (FDR) del domo de LSST con el proveedor EIE Group. LSST reconoció la alta calidad del trabajo realizado por el equipo de EIE y aprecia la buena relación de trabajo que se ha establecido. Se identificaron nueve elementos que requieren acción inmediata y cierre formal por escrito antes de recibir la aprobación para avanzar en la construcción. Todos estos elementos "Tier 1" son muy factibles y no plantean ningún problema significativo en el avance. En general, la calidad y cantidad de trabajo completado hasta la fecha fue considerado adecuado por FDR, y la revisión un éxito!  

Pronto comenzará la construcción de la Instalación Base del edificio de LSST en la ciudad de La Serena, en el "recinto" de AURA para LSST, CTIO, SOAR, y operaciones AURA-O. Las obras comienza con una remodelación de la estructura existente a finales de julio de 2016, y luego la construcción del Centro de Datos de LSST y espacio de oficinas adicionales en enero de 2017. Un sitio web con información sobre el proyecto, incluyendo un plan semanal de actividades, documentos, avisos y web cam será desarrollado para mantener las partes interesadas lejos y cerca, informadas.
