PROJECT NEWS

The New Year is off to a vigorous start with both a meeting of the Data Management Leadership Team (DMLT) and a dry run for the upcoming Commissioning Review taking place in Tucson this week.  The DMLT meets face-to-face quarterly; the Commissioning Review takes place January 24 – 26 at SLAC.

Installation of the fiber-optic cable from the AURA Gatehouse in La Serena to Cerro Pachón is nearing completion. 

LSST had a strong presence at AAS 229 in Grapevine, TX, last week with a booth on the exhibit hall floor, participation in the Career Fair and Networking Event, and an LSST Town Hall.  At the Town Hall, Beth Willman, Pat Eliason, and Lucianne Walkowicz spoke to the crowd of ~160 about the LSST Project, Corporation, and Science Collaboration activities.  Presentations are available through Zenodo at this shortened URL: http://ls.st/e4i

PERSONNEL NEWS

Brian Selvy has been promoted to the position of Systems Engineering Manager.  Brian, along with the Systems Scientist, Chuck Claver, will be responsible for leading and managing the Project Systems Engineering team.  Going forward, Brian and Chuck will focus on system verification and commissioning related activities while directing project simulations to support system-wide integration and test activities and on-going commissioning planning development.

In addition, four new employees came onboard with LSST this week – welcome to them all! 

Aime Wiest has joined the LSST Project Office as an Administrative Assistant, providing support to the EPO, Systems Engineering, and Project Office subsystems.  Aime comes to us with over 15 years of experience in the engineering and mining fields and skills ranging from project controls, employee orientation, document control, and more.

David Rathfelder has joined the LSST Project Office in the position of IT/AV Technician.  David will assist Iain Goodenow with a variety of IT support duties and also be responsible for supporting meetings, reviews, guest speakers and special events.  Previously David was the Director of Event Technology from ENCORE Technology, a leading provider of innovative in-house audiovisual services for hotels, conference centers, and resorts throughout North America.

Two employees have joined the Camera subsystem:  Mechanical Engineer Hannah Wilensky, and Designer Boyd Bowdish.  Both will be working with Kevin Reil’s Integration & Test team at SLAC.

El Año Nuevo ha tenido un buen comienzo con la reunión del Equipo de Liderazgo de Gestión de Datos (DMLT) y un ensayo para la próxima Revisión de Puesta en Marcha que está tomando lugar en Tucson esta semana.  El DMLT se reúne cara a cara trimestralmente; la Revisión de Puesta en Marcha tiene lugar el 24 - 26 de Enero en SLAC.

Brian Selvy ha sido promovido al puesto de Gerente de Ingeniería de Sistemas. Brian, junto con el Científico de Sistema, Chuck Claver, serán responsables de dirigir y administrar el equipo de Ingeniería de Sistemas del proyecto. Aime llega a nosotros con más de 15 años de experiencia en las área de ingeniería y minería con habilidades que van desde control de proyectos, orientación de empleados, control de documentos, y mucho más.

AURA’s Workforce and Diversity Committee  (WDC) met in Tucson this week, bringing together Human Resources representatives, external experts, and the Diversity Advocates at each AURA center: Gemini, LSST, NOAO, NSO, and STScI.  The group works on issues relevant to building and maintaining a diverse workforce where individuals feel empowered to bring their perspectives, ideas, and approaches to AURA centers.  [Read More.]

A film crew from NCSA visited Tucson this week, recording interviews and background footage for a documentary about DES and LSST.  This is part of the larger NSF-funded CADENS project to help explain and increase literacy about Digitally Enabled Science.    LSST Deputy Director B. Willman was interviewed for the documentary, as were LSST science collaboration members T. Matheson (NOAO) and D. Norman (NOAO).  The crew also visited Arizona Optical Services to film polishing of the LSST Camera lenses. 

A heads up for LSST team members that our Joint Technical Meeting is scheduled for March 6 - 8 in Pasadena, CA.  A SAC meeting is tentatively scheduled for the day before the JTM.  The meeting website will go live after the holiday break with about six weeks before registration deadline. 

B. Willman and S. Kahn will be traveling to meet with the NSF, DOE, and LSSTC next week to discuss progress on the LSST Operations Plan.

Data Management team members Colin Slater and Mario Juric were in Chile at the “Towards Science in Chile with LSST” 2016 workshop this week where about 80 Chilean astronomers gathered to learn more about LSST. Colin, joined remotely from Tucson by Jonathan Sick, led a hands-on tutorial on what to expect from LSST data and LSST communication tools. Mario presented the most recent thinking about the contents of LSST datasets, and services offered to the community in LSST Data Access Centers. Ashish Mahabal and Pat Eliason were there as well, representing the LSST science collaborations and Corporation.

Last Call!  The LSSTC 2017 Call for Proposal deadline is fast approaching, and this will be the last reminder you’ll see in the Digest. Proposals must be received by midnight on Monday, December 19, 2016 to be considered for funding as part of the 2017 Enabling Science call. We are looking forward to receiving your submission. The next Science Collaboration Coordinator (SCC) Office Hours will be held on Wednesday December 21, at 1pm Central. SCC Office Hours are a time to (virtually) stop by LSST SCC Lucianne Walkowicz's "office" via Google Hangout. Connection information will be sent out to science collaboration members in the 24 hours before office hours, so watch your email for details! If you can't make this month, Office Hours generally take place on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month, so please join us in the future. 

PERSONNEL NEWS

Ulrike Angela Hautmann comes to LSST most recently from CNES, the French Government Space Agency as a Quality Assurance Engineer and will fill our Documentation Specialist position to assist with procedures (manuals, documentation, etc.) in particular the M1M3 system.  She has a strong background in technical writing (skills in 6 languages) with nearly 20 years of experience including time at SKA Observatory in South Africa and ALMA Observatory in Chile.

• The University of Washington announces two postdoctoral positions to work in a new astronomy data science center that has just been established at UW (DIRAC). • Also at UW there is an independent postdoctoral fellowship program (with a substantial research budget for the fellows) for data intensive research. La Fuerza de Trabajo de AURA y el Comité de Diversidad AURA’s Workforce and Diversity Committee  (WDC), se reunieron esta semana en Tucson, reuniendo a representantes de Recursos Humanos, expertos externos, y Defensores de la Diversidad en cada centro de AURA: Gemini, LSST, NOAO, NSO y STScI. El grupo trabaja sobre cuestiones pertinentes para la construcción y el mantenimiento de una fuerza de trabajo diversa donde los individuos se sienten facultados para llevar sus perspectivas, ideas y enfoques para centros de AURA. The LSST Camera achieved a major milestone this week: the Science Raft team, located primarily at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), has constructed the very first Science Raft Tower Module populated with a full array of 9 CCDs and 3 Raft Electronics Boards.  Full story with images can be found here. 

A fundamental requirement of the LSST Education and Public Outreach (EPO) program is to develop products that users actually want and need.  Since technology and user tastes change over time, we have been encouraged to refresh the body of work that resulted in the EPO Baseline Design approved at our Final Design Review in December of 2013.  To lay the groundwork for that effort, a workshop took place in Tucson this week to initiate a follow-up needs assessment.  A broad group of participants will work with a consultant firm over the next ten weeks to perform an analysis of our current EPO design plans, including stakeholder interviews, personas, journey maps, and interface reviews. For further information contact EPO Project Manager Ben Emmons, bemmons@lsst.org

As part of preparations for the upcoming Commissioning Plan review next January at SLAC, Systems Scientist Chuck Claver led a productive Data Management (DM)-centered commissioning workshop at the University of Washington this week.  The team worked on defining the observations needed to verify the scientific performance of the DM system and how to manage the transfer from commissioning to operations.  Read More.

The LSST Project Office will be closed for holidays on December 26 & 27, 2016, and January 2 & 3, 2017.  This Weekly Digest will not be distributed on December 23, 30, or January 6, picking up again after the AAS meeting on Friday, January 13th. 

CORPORATION NEWS

Ten days and counting down to the deadline for the 2017 LSST Corporation Enabling Science Call for Proposals. Proposals are due no later than Monday, December 19, 2016 at midnight PST. Call for Proposal details are available here.

LSST Corporation welcomes five new International Contributors to the LSST Team. New ICs include: Max Plank Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE)/Germany, University of Nova Gorica (UNG)/Slovenia, Barcelona-Madrid Consortium (BCN-MAD)/Spain, Stockholm University Physics Department (SU-Physics)/Sweden, and the Graduate Institute of Astronomy of National Central University (NCU)/Taiwan ROC.

The second Data Science Fellowship Program “school” will take place January 23-27, 2017 at Caltech in Pasadena, CA. This continuing program is a two-year training program for graduate students designed to teach skills required for LSST science that are not easily addressed by current astrophysics programs.

Andrés Anania has joined the LSST Telescope and Site software team as a Control System Software Engineer. In this position, based in La Serena, Andrés will contribute to the design and development of TCS software components and will play a key role in the integration of these components in Chile. Andrés has a background in electrical engineering with software design and development experience for embedded systems. Most recently he was an intern at ALMA; Andrés also has experience with the development of a 3-D printer.

La Cámara de LSST ha logrado un hito esta semana: el equipo de Science Raft, ubicados principalmente en el Laboratorio Nacional Brookhaven (BNL), ha construido la primera Torre Módulo de Science Raft con una completa variedad de 9 CCD y 3 tableros electrónicos de Raft. Un requisito fundamental del programa de Educación y Difusión Pública (EPO) de LSST es desarrollar productos que los usuarios realmente quieran y necesiten. Dado que la tecnología y los gustos del usuario cambian con el transcurso del tiempo, nos han alentado para refrescar el cuerpo de trabajo que resultó en el Diseño Básico EPO aprobado en nuestra Revisión del Diseño Final en Diciembre de 2013. Para sentar las bases de ese esfuerzo, se celebró un seminario en Tucson esta semana para iniciar una evaluación de las necesidades de seguimiento. Como parte de los preparativos para la próxima revisión del Plan de Puesta en Marcha el próximo Enero en SLAC, el Científico e Sistemas Chuck Claver encabezó un taller de puesta en marcha centrado en la Gestión de Datos (DM) en la Universidad de Washington esta semana. El equipo trabajó en la definición de las observaciones necesarias para verificar el rendimiento científico de DM y cómo gestionar la transferencia desde la puesta en marcha de las operaciones. Diez días y la cuenta regresiva para el plazo límite para la Convocatoria de propuestas para 2017 LSST Corporation Enabling Science. La Corporación LSST da la bienvenida a cinco nuevos colaboradores internacionales al equipo de LSST. Nuevo ICs incluyen: Instituto Max Planck para la Física Extraterrestre (MPE) en Alemania, la Universidad de Nova Gorica (UNG)/Eslovenia, Barcelona-Madrid Consortium (BCN-MAD)/España, Departamento de Física de la Universidad de Estocolmo (SU-Física)/Suecia y el Instituto de Astronomía de la Universidad Nacional Central (NCU)/Taiwán ROC.

La segunda "escuela" de Data Science Fellowship Program tendrá lugar del 23 al 27 de enero, 2017 En Caltech, en Pasadena, CA. Este programa continuo es un programa de formación de dos años para estudiantes de posgrado diseñado para enseñar las habilidades necesarias para ciencia LSST que no son fáciles de resolver por los actuales programas de la astrofísica.

Andrés Anania se ha sumado al equipo de software de Telescopio y Sitio LSST como ingeniero de software del sistema de control. En esta posición, basada en La Serena, Andrés contribuirá al diseño y desarrollo de componentes de software de TCS y desempeñará un papel clave en la integración de estos componentes en Chile. Andrés tiene un background en ingeniería eléctrica con experiencia en diseño y desarrollo de software para sistemas embebidos. Más recientemente él fue un pasante en ALMA; Andrés también tiene experiencia en el desarrollo de una impresora 3D.

LSST Deputy Director Beth Willman participated in the 6th Subaru International Conference in Hiroshima, Japan, November 28 – December 02, 2016.  Beth presented first results and predictions for a Subaru/HSC observational program to comprehensively map LMC stellar mass galaxies at distances of ~2- 4 Mpc., highlighting some challenges encountered and lessons learned as data is being processed through a prototype LSST pipeline.

Five members of the T&S team traveled to Dresden to participate in the LSST Coating Plant PDR review on Nov 29th-Dec 2nd. You can read more about the review and the custom magnetron in this week’s blog.

With an eye on commissioning planning, project members from Data Management and the Systems Engineering Team will be in Seattle, December 5th- 8th for a Data Management Commissioning Plan Workshop being held at the University of Washington.

The LSST Corporation's Enabling Science Committee is soliciting funding proposals to support programs that help prepare for LSST science.  Proposals are due no later than Monday, December 19, 2016 at midnight (2400 hours) PST.  Click here for details. 

PERSONNEL NEWS

Systems Engineering Manager, George Angeli has announced his departure from LSST. George has spent 16 years working on extremely large telescope projects, four of which have been with LSST. The project is grateful for the managerial and technical contributions George has made during his time with the Systems Engineering Team. Please join us in congratulating George on his new position at the Giant Magellan Telescope where we are sure he will continue to contribute even more to the advancement of large astronomical telescopes.

Augustin Guyonnet has joined the Data Management subsystem as Post-Doctoral Fellow and reports to John Swinbank. Augustin's home institution is Harvard University, Department of Physics. Augustin will participate in the development of the tools (hardware, analysis software, and modeling) needed to determine the optical transmission of the atmosphere at wavelengths that are relevant to LSST observations.

Kenny Lo joined the Data Management subsystem as Senior Software Developer on November 21, 2016 and will report to Fritz Mueller. Kenny's home institution is SLAC. Kenny will be working closely with Nate Pease and Brian Van Klaveren to help the DAX team pick up additional velocity on the future evolution of the Data Butler and DAX Web Services.

Director Adjunto LSST Beth Willman participó en la 6th Subaru International Conference en Hiroshima, Japón, 28 de Noviembre - Diciembre 02, 2016. Beth presentó los primeros resultados y predicciones para un programa observacional Subaru/HSC para mapear comprensivamente galaxias de masa estelas LMC a distancias de ~2- 4 Mpc., destacando algunas de las dificultades encontradas y las lecciones aprendidas ya que los datos se procesan a través de un prototipo de canalización LSST.

Cinco miembros del equipo de T&S viajaron a Dresden para participar en la revisión PDR de la Planta de Revestimiento LSST durante Nov. 29- Dic. 2. Puede leer más acerca de la revisión y del magnetrón personalizado en el blog de esta semana.

Con un ojo sobre la puesta en marcha de la planificación, los miembros del proyecto de gestión de datos y el equipo de ingeniería de sistemas será en Seattle, 5 de diciembre- 8 para una puesta en marcha del Plan de Gestión de datos taller de trabajo que se celebró en la Universidad de Washington.

Gerente de Ingeniería de Sistemas, George Angeli ha anunciado su partida de LSST. George ha pasado 16 años trabajando en proyectos del telescopio extremadamente grande, cuatro de los cuales han sido con LSST. El proyecto está agradecido por las contribuciones técnicas y gerenciales que George ha hecho durante su tiempo con el equipo de Ingeniería de Sistemas. Por favor, únase a nosotros para felicitar a George sobre su nueva posición en el Giant Magellan Telescope donde estamos seguros de que seguirá contribuyendo aún más al avance de grandes telescopios astronómicos.

Augustin Guyonnet se ha sumado al subsistema de Gestión de Datos como Post-Doctoral Fellow y depende de John Swinbank. La institución de origen de Augustin es la Universidad de Harvard, Departamento de Física. Augustin participará en el desarrollo de las herramientas (hardware, software de análisis y modelación) necesarios para determinar la transmisión óptica de la atmósfera en las longitudes de onda que son relevantes para las observaciones de LSST.

Kenny Lo se unió al subsistema de Gestión de Datos como Desarrollador Senior de Software el 21 de Noviembre, 2016 y depende de Fritz Müller. La institución de origen de Kenny es SLAC. Project Scientist Zeljko Ivezic and Data Management team member Meredith Rawls, both astronomers at the University of Washington, along with David Ciardi, the science lead for LSST’s Science User Interface Team (SUIT) from IPAC, all participated in the 105th Meeting of the American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO) in Boston, MA, November 10 – 12, 2017.  The theme of this year’s meeting was The AAVSO's Role in the Age of Large Surveys.  Read more.

Many team members were involved in an internal review this week of the Telescope &Site assembly, integration, and verification plans.  This review is looking at the integration and test process for the Telescope and Site subsystem, including the flow from established requirements to verification test plans, and the equipment and test processes used for verification.

NETWORK CHAOS: Next Friday, November 25th, the IT staff in Tucson will be upgrading the backbone Ethernet switch during which time all connections to Tucson servers WILL NOT WORK until the work has been completed.  This outage will affect all LSST services provided by the Tucson servers including phone, email, websites, project tools such as Confluence, Jira, and more.  Work will begin at 8am MST on Friday, November 25th (aka Black Friday) with partial to full functionality returning by late-morning.  Some outages in various services will continue during the rest of the day with the possibility of some clean up remaining for Saturday the 26th

We now know the date, location, and venue for the next LSST Joint Technical Meeting (JTM).  It will take place March 6-8, 2017, at the Hilton in Glendale, CA.  This meeting is for the broadly dispersed Project Team to gather and collaborate face-to-face. The meeting will be hosted by the Science User Interface Team (SUIT) at IPAC/Caltech.

LSST Science Collaboration Coordinator Lucianne Walkowicz joined other members of the Gemini Board who were meeting in La Serena this week for a visit to Cerro Pachón. 

The LSST Corporation Enabling Science Call for Proposals is now open. The call is open to proposals for workshops, meetings, and other programs to prepare for LSST data. This year, the Call is also open to proposals to support undergraduate research. Proposals are due no later than Monday, December 19, 2016 at midnight (2400 hours) PST. PERSONNEL NEWS

DevOps engineer Adam Thornton has joined the LSST Data Management Science Quality and Reliability Engineering (SQuaRE) team in Tucson.  As part of the team, Adam will be involved in writing software to validate and test the readiness of the LSST DM software system for science applications using simulations and precursor survey data.

Software engineer Te-Wei Tsai has joined the LSST Telescope and Site group in Tucson.  His duties will be to engineer software products for the Telescope Control System (TCS), including applications for the active optics system and instrumentation.

A science writer position has been posted on the LSST Hiring Site and two more positions will appear there shortly: an Education Specialist to join the Education and Public Outreach group and a Communications Manager to take over from Suzanne Jacoby who will be moving to a part-time role with LSST effective February 3, 2017.

Esta revisión está viendo la integración y el proceso de prueba para el subsistema de Telescopio y Sitio, incluyendo el flujo de requisitos establecidos para la prueba de verificación de planes, y los procesos de prueba y el equipo utilizados para la verificación.

Caos de la red: el próximo viernes, 25 de noviembre, el personal de IT en Tucson actualizará el conmutador Ethernet de red, tiempo durante el cual todas las conexiones a servidores de Tucson no funcionarán hasta que el trabajo se haya completado. Esta interrupción afectará a todos los servicios LSST proporcionados por los servidores de Tucson, incluyendo teléfonos, correo electrónico, sitios web, herramientas de proyecto como Confluencia, Jira, y más. Ingeniero DevOps Adam Thornton se ha sumado al equipo de LSST Data Management Science Quality and Reliability Engineering (SQuaRE) en Tucson.  Como parte del equipo, Adam estará involucrado en escribir software para validar y probar la disposición del LSST DM sistema de software para aplicaciones de la ciencia mediante simulaciones y precursores los datos de la encuesta.

Ingeniero en Software Te-Wei Tsai se ha unido al grupo de Telescopio y Sitio de LSST en Tucson. Su cometido será diseñar productos de software para el Sistema de Control del Telescopio (TCS), incluidas las aplicaciones para el sistema de óptica activa e instrumentación.
