Dear Colleagues,
In the past couple of weeks, we have witnessed a number of disturbing events in the U.S., on top of the COVID-19 pandemic that we have all been coping with for months now. The murders of George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery have made it unbearably apparent that racial injustice is very much a reality in this country, and that it continues to plague the lives of people of color.
The unrest in the streets is not unexpected, given the systemic and long term inequities many of you have had to endure. This is an unconscionable situation. We stand by you, and we want to convey our empathy if you are fearful for your own safety in light of the current events.
The Rubin Observatory community consists of a wealth of diverse and talented individuals from a variety of cultures, employed by multiple institutions. Over the past few days, you have probably been sent messages by the leaders of your own institutions reaffirming their commitment to respect for diversity and strong opposition to all forms of discrimination, including racism. On behalf of the Project as a whole, we would like to strongly emphasize that we uphold those same values. Through the Policies and procedures we follow, and our Workplace Culture Advocates Program, we hope that we have created a safe environment to protect us all against discriminatory practices.
Let us all strive to focus on what we, the Rubin community, can do to make things better for people of color in our teams, so that we can make positive measurable change. Let us open a dialog, to help one another better understand the range of perspectives we bring to the Project. Please connect through us, or any Rubin member that you feel comfortable talking to.
We will get through this. We have the privilege of constructing and eventually operating one of the most exciting scientific experiments of our time. When Rubin Observatory's construction is complete, it will be a testament to the ability of people from diverse backgrounds to work closely together to create something unique, beautiful, and intensely special.

En las últimas dos semanas, hemos sido testigos de una serie de eventos inquietantes en los EEUU, además de la pandemia por COVID-19 con la que todos hemos estado lidiando durante meses. Los asesinatos de George Floyd y Ahmaud Arbery han hecho insoportablemente evidente que la injusticia racial es una realidad en este país, y que sigue afectando la vida de las personas de color...
Los disturbios en las calles no son inesperados, dadas las desigualdades sistémicas y a largo plazo que muchos de ustedes han tenido que soportar. Esta es una situación intolerable. Los apoyamos y queremos expresar nuestra empatía si temen por su propia seguridad en luz de los acontecimientos actuales.
La comunidad del Observatorio Rubin consiste de una gran cantidad de individuos diversos y talentosos provenientes de variadas culturas, quienes son empleados por múltiples instituciones. Es probable que, en los últimos días, los líderes de sus propias instituciones les hayan enviado mensajes reafirmando su compromiso de respetar la diversidad y una fuerte oposición a todas las formas de discriminación, incluido el racismo. En nombre de todo el Proyecto, nos gustaría enfatizar fuertemente que defendemos esos mismos valores.
