The LSST 2018 Project and Community Workshop, which took place in Tucson August 13-17, offered opportunities for face-to-face interactions between geographically distributed LSST project team members and members of the LSST science community. LSST was represented at AURA’s booth at the recent International Astronomical Union (IAU) General Assembly Meeting, held in Vienna August 20-31. A photo of the booth is available in the LSST Gallery.
LSST Director Steve Kahn, Project Manager Victor Krabbendam, and Systems Engineering Manager Brian Selvy traveled to Spain during the week of August 20-24. While there, the team visited Telescope Mount Assembly (TMA) vendor Asturfeito to discuss the schedule and preparations for Factory Acceptance Testing of the TMA, which will begin in September (click here for a group photo). Prior to the Asturfeito visit, Steve traveled to France where he joined Camera staff meeting with L3 vendor Thales SESO (TSESO) and REOSC to discuss contract status. They also visited IN2P3 to review work completed on the Filter Exchanger, which is progressing well.
The Coating Chamber arrived safely In Antwerp, Belgium on a barge despite low water levels in the rivers and canals of Europe. In mid-September, the Coating Chamber will be placed aboard the aptly named Mv BBC Arizona. Once the ship leaves Antwerp, the voyage to Chile is expected to take 30 to 45 days.
The LSST Science Advisory Committee (SAC) met on August 13 as part of the LSST 2018 Project and Community Workshop. The committee discussed the LSST data rights and data access policies, and developed plans to review the LSST Cadence Optimization White Papers, which are being prepared by the community in advance of the November 30, 2018 deadline. The LSST Corporation hosted a group of 19 student interns at the LSST 2018 Project and Community Workshop, funding the students’ transportation, registration, and housing. At the workshop, each of the students gave a brief presentation and displayed a poster summarizing their LSST-related summer research under the guidance of LSST Corp’s Enabling Science instructors Prof. Pat Burchat (Stanford) and Prof. Gordon Richards (Drexel). While in Tucson, the students also toured the Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab at the University of Arizona. The LSST Corp is seeking funding to continue bringing students to the annual workshop. Siegfried Eggl joined the Data Management subsystem on September 1. He will be working in the Alert Production group at the University of Washington. Siegfried will be spearheading the development of MOPS, the Moving Objects Processing Software, which will use detections made on the differences between LSST images taken at different times to identify and track the orbits of solar system objects.
Penn State is adding new open-rank faculty positions to build on existing excellence in astrophysics, through a cluster hire with a theme of Data Sciences for application to large astronomical surveys such as LSST. More information about these positions can be found here.

El Taller del Proyecto y Comunitario LSST 2018, que tuvo lugar en Tucson del 13 al 17 de agosto, ofreció oportunidades para interacciones cara a cara entre los miembros del equipo del proyecto LSST distribuidos geográficamente y los miembros de la comunidad científica LSST. El Director de LSST Steve Kahn, el Director del Proyecto Victor Krabbendam y el Gerente de Ingeniería de Sistemas Brian Selvy, viajaron a España durante la semana del 20 al 24 de Agosto. Mientras estuvieron allí, el equipo visitó el Montaje del Telescopio (TMA) del proveedor Arturfeito para discutir el cronograma y los preparativos para las Pruebas de Aceptación de Fábrica del TMA, que comenzarán en Septiembre (haga clic aquí para obtener una foto grupal). Antes de la visita a Asturfeito, Steve viajó a Francia, donde se unió a la reunión del personal de la Cámara con el proveedor de L3 Thales SESO (TSESO) y REOSC para analizar el estado de los contratos. La Cámara de Recubrimiento llegó a salvo en Antwerp, Bélgica en una barcaza a pesar de los bajos niveles de agua en los ríos y canales de Europa. A mediados de Septiembre, la Cámara de Recubrimiento se emplazara a bordo del bien llamado My BBC Arizona. Una vez que el barco zarpe de Antwerp, se espera que el viaje a Chile tome entre 30 y 45 días.
El Comité Asesor de Ciencia de LSST (SAC) se reunió el 13 de Agosto como parte del Taller del Proyecto y Comunitario LSST 2018. El comité discutió los derechos de datos de LSST y las políticas de acceso a datos, y desarrolló planes para revisar las Propuestas de Optimización de Cadencias LSST, que están siendo preparadas por la comunidad antes de la fecha límite del 30 de Noviembre del 2018. La Corporacion de LSST organizó un grupo de 19 estudiantes practicantes en el Taller del Proyecto y Comunitario LSST 2018, financiando el transporte, el registro y alojamiento de los estudiantes. En el taller, cada uno de los estudiantes hizo una breve presentación y mostró un póster que resumio su investigación de verano relacionada con LSST bajo la guía de los profesores Habilitadores de Ciencia, Prof. Pat Burchat (Stanford) y el Prof. Gordon Richards (Drexel). Mientras estaban en Tucson, los estudiantes también recorrieron el Laboratorio del Espejo Richard F. Caris en la Universidad de Arizona. Siegfried Eggl se unió al subsistema de Administración de Datos el 1 de Septiembre. El trabajará en el grupo de Produccion de Alerta en la Universidad de Washington. Siegfried encabezará el desarrollo de MOPS, el software de Procesamiento de Objetos en Movimiento, que utilizará las detecciones realizadas sobre las diferencias entre las imágenes LSST tomadas en diferentes momentos para identificar y rastrear las órbitas de los objetos del sistema solar.
Penn State está agregando nuevos puestos de Profesores para aprovechar la excelencia existente en astrofísica, a través de una contratacion grupal con un tema de Ciencias de Datos para su aplicación en grandes estudios astronómicos como es LSST.
