Željko Ivezić appointed Director of Rubin Observatory Construction

Dear Colleagues,

It is my pleasure to communicate to you all that Matt Mountain (AURA President) has announced that Željko Ivezić will assume the role of Director of Rubin Observatory Construction upon my departure from the Project on January 3, 2022. 

As most of you know, Željko has been involved with Rubin Observatory/LSST since its inception in the early 2000s, serving for many years as Project Scientist and head of the Project Science Team. Additionally, Željko was named Deputy Director of Rubin Observatory Construction in  September 2018, and he will take up the role as Head of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) for Operations.

Željko's knowledge of the Rubin Observatory system and his commitment to its success are extraordinary, and I am confident that he will lead the Rubin Construction Project to its triumphant conclusion. Željko will be in touch with additional details and updates, in the meantime please join me in congratulating him.

Es un placer para mí comunicarles que Matt Mountain (Presidente de AURA) ha anunciado que Željko Ivezić asumirá el cargo de Director de Construcción del Observatorio Rubin tras mi salida del Proyecto el 3 de enero de 2022.

Como la mayoría de ustedes saben, Željko ha estado involucrado con el Observatorio Rubin / LSST desde sus inicios a principios de la década de 2000, colaborando durante muchos años como científico del proyecto y jefe del equipo científico del proyecto. Financial support for Rubin Observatory comes from the National Science Foundation (NSF) through Cooperative Agreement No. 1258333, the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science under Contract No. DE-AC02-76SF00515, and private funding raised by the LSST Corporation. The NSF-funded Rubin Observatory Project Office for construction was established as an operating center under management of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA).  The DOE-funded effort to build the Rubin Observatory LSST Camera (LSSTCam) is managed by the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC).
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 to promote the progress of science. NSF supports basic research and people to create knowledge that transforms the future.
NSF and DOE will continue to support Rubin Observatory in its Operations phase. They will also provide support for scientific research with LSST data.
